Default How much live music do you see?

How often are you at shows?

What will get you to part money for a ticket (curiousity/something new, deeply-loved bands, ostentation, social occasions)?

Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?

Would you like to see more? What stops you?

What do you get out of seeing music live that you don't from listening to the album?

Do you get sick of people asking you if you have "any concerts coming up" and then never having heard of the bands you are going to see?

1. Back home I go to a proper gig maybe once every 6-8 weeks. Local bands I try to catch every few weeks if possible.

2. mainly bands I love and know will put on a good show, new bands I've discovered that I want to see live or bands I like and want to check out live to see how they are.

3. There are some gigs Ive been to where I've thought, man I should have stayed at home / saved my money but these occassions are few and far between.

4. Yeah I'd like to see more. Money, time and the fact doing it constantly takes a bit of magic away from it stops me.

5. the visual aspect of it, a different take on the songs and the social atmosphere you get at gigs. Listening to definitely maybe even on a great sound system will never compare to being in amongst 60k people singing live forever.

6. I never get asked if I have any gigs coming up very often except from a handful of friends who are really into their music and will usually know the bands.

How often are you at shows?

It depends what you class as shows. I probably pay money to go gigs around 5 or 6 times a year, more if I can afford it. Festivals are good to go to as you can see many bands for a knocked down price. I also tend to get to local bars and watch some raw unsigned acts now and again, though I guess I wouldn't call those "shows".

What will get you to part money for a ticket (curiousity/something new, deeply-loved bands, ostentation, social occasions)?

All of these I guess, apart from maybe curiousity. I like to know who I'm going to see before I pay money to see them.

Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?

Yeah definately. It's great to have something to look forward to. I love going to gigs to have a few beers, socialise and sing at the top of my voice.

Would you like to see more? What stops you?

Yeah of course I would. Money is a big killer and also the distance that you have to travel. I wanted to go and see Bruce at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park London last year but it would be 4 hours in the car, driving in London (which is a pain in the ass at the best of times), hotels, etc. That and the fact that I couldn't get anyone to come with me put me off going. If it was Manchester I'd have just hopped on the train and gone on my own.

What do you get out of seeing music live that you don't from listening to the album?

Many albums nowadays are recorded using about 16-32 tracks with many overdubs and overproduction. Live you get to see how the band actually is. It has a much rawer feel to it as it is less perfect. You also get extended solos, maybe added lyrics or other arrangements which is a big plus point. Some bands live play different versions of the songs or re-work them. If you've ever heard Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy Live album by Dire Straits you'll know it to be a completely different version and better version of the song than the original. You also get the chance to get up close and personal with the band you love. This can spark a great atmosphere with the audience and can ultimately spur a band on to performing even better.

Do you get sick of people asking you if you have "any concerts coming up" and then never having heard of the bands you are going to see?

Yeah sometimes, although I do my best to educate them.

1. How often are you at shows?
It depends on which bands/artists are around. Some weeks, it can be 2 or 3 shows a week, sometimes I don't have any concert for weeks. But when it happens, I really look for something because I need it! For example this week I saw 2 concerts 2 nights in a row. Nothing planned for the moment for next week but it can change.

2.What will get you to part money for a ticket (curiousity/something new, deeply-loved bands, ostentation, social occasions)?
First of all, never ostentation! I breathe music so I'll never go to a concert because it's "the place to be"
I buy tickets for bands I love and I'm fan of, usually it costs more than 50 euro...
I love to discover new bands, so curiosity, definitely! I listen to the radio, I read magazines and I have friends who love music too and who always recommand me to see one band or another.
I also have opportunities to see some shows for free by working for venues. Sometimes it allows me to discover something new for free...and sometimes it makes me save money to see a band I really love, so it's a good deal!
Social occasions too. Most of the time it's friends who are going to a show and ask me if I want to come. Even if I don't know the band, I go because it's a nice evening with friends.

3.Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?
Not always of course, I would be lying. Sometimes it's because it's boring. For example when it's not my favourite music's style (rock by all means!)
And sometimes, I don't enjoy the show because I'm tired. When you go out during the week, after a day at work and you have to stay up for 2 hours or more...it's just too much. Mostly when you repeat it several times a week. But I never leave a show before the end. I think it only happened once, I was really tired, I didn't paid for it and Heather Nova bored me to death.

4.Would you like to see more? What stops you?
No because I think that an average of 4 to 6 concerts a month is already pretty awesome!
The distance, the fatigue, the money and days off can stop me.
But with the distance, come the transportation and hotel costs, so that's money too. And holidays of course. When you have to travel to see your favourite band in another country (not always on the weekend!) you have to take 1 or 2 days off.

5. What do you get out of seeing music live that you don't from listening to the album? It's pretty obvious! You can like a band on stage but not on albums and the other way around. And apart from that, when you're in an audience, with a crowd clapping and raising hands, singing, jumping...it's not the same experience as listening to an album in your living room. Sometimes it's better and sometimes it's worse

6.Do you get sick of people asking you if you have "any concerts coming up" and then never having heard of the bands you are going to see?
Friends and colleagues know that I'm a concert addict so I'm always glad to share my plans and my reviews! Most of the time they know the bands. When they don't but are interested to know and discover, I share an album or a YT link. It's the greatness of music, when you can share your passion...
And I'm not interested by people who don't like music or are not interested by it.

don't have much time so i'll keep it short....

How often are you at shows?

Very often...usually around 10-15 a month.

What will get you to part money for a ticket (curiousity/something new, deeply-loved bands, ostentation, social occasions)?
All of these. Plus, i recently got asked to write for a music magazine, so it's part of the job now, too

Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?
mostly yes. of course sometimes a band will put on a bad/boring show, but the great shows prevail

Would you like to see more? What stops you?

you can never see enough concerts what stops me is usually only work commitments (like when i am on a business trip) or money issues (e.g. when a ticket costs over 50 euros, i have to be a huge fan of the band to even consider spending that much money)

What do you get out of seeing music live that you don't from listening to the album?
i love the atmosphere, watching the band play their instruments, meeting people...

Do you get sick of people asking you if you have "any concerts coming up" and then never having heard of the bands you are going to see?
no, on the contrary. i like introducing people to music they haven't heard before

How often are you at shows?
An average of 2 concerts of famous artists/bands a month.

What will get you to part money for a ticket (curiousity/something new, deeply-loved bands, ostentation, social occasions)?
To get the live-experience of an artist.

Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?
Yes. I am looking forward to those days out and away from everything.

Would you like to see more? What stops you?
I go to every act I like to see live. The only thing that stops me is the lack of performances given by the acts I like.

What do you get out of seeing music live that you don't from listening to the album?
Some sort of therapy. Nothing but the music and thousands of people who are there for the same reason. Enjoy themselves with good music. Time away of issues and stuff. Entertainment. Without concerts I wouldn't feel as how I feel now.

Do you get sick of people asking you if you have "any concerts coming up" and then never having heard of the bands you are going to see?
The people that ask me those questions know what I like and mostly know the band name. I am getting more sick of the people asking if they can stand in front of me. Like if I can help it that I am tall or that the person that asks me to move is 27 and as tall as 3 bricks lined up vertically

I salute you,
TS

1. How often are you at shows?
I'd say once a month atleast (sometimes considerably more as I work in an arena)

2.What will get you to part money for a ticket (curiousity/something new, deeply-loved bands, ostentation, social occasions)? If there's a band I like touring I'll usually pay what they're asking, I do like going to gigs though of new an upcoming bands just out of curiosity. Sometimes it's also for the social side just becaause a lot of my friends are going etc

3.Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?
I don't think I've ever seen a band where atleast one song hasn't impressed me but overall I have seen some bad gigs and yeah having an upcoming gig always excites me

4.Would you like to see more? What stops you?
I would like to go to more gigs but I guess the main factor is money (especially with me liking so many big bands who are charging a fortune) for example I wanted to see Paul weller in December but I don't have the £35 at the moment ( justbspent it on a Leeds ticket) but because I work at the arena it doesn't really matter I should be able to ear it anyway

5. What do you get out of seeing music live that you don't from listening to the album?
it's thr buzz you get after a gig that keeps me going back, the ringing in the ears etc I love the adrenaline rush plus lice music is generally miles better!

6.Do you get sick of people asking you if you have "any concerts coming up" and then never having heard of the bands you are going to see?
No I like people asking me what gigs I've got coming up and introducing people to new Bands in cool

1. It depends on the time of year, and what I have going on school-wise. In 2009, I hit 17 major gigs, and I have 1 down with 7 more lined up so far for this year. I'm not one for clubs/unsigned bands, but I will go see friend's bands play.

2. Mainly, bands I love, or at least like. Those are the only shows I'll spend big money on honestly. Though, I will go see bands that my friends want, as long as they're not too far out of the kind of music I like, and not too expensive.

3. Yes, as sad as it sounds. I love having gigs on the horizon. Always a great thing to think about when life sucks.

4. I always try to enjoy gigs in the moment. I won't think about setlists or anything until after the show, though at times it's impossible to think about.

5. There's always more shows that I'd love to see, but I am lucky enough to see about 90% of the shows I want to see. I'd hate to see too many shows, as I want to keep the experience special. And then there's the money aspect, which does get in the way. For example, after the great show last year I really wanted to see U2 at Giants again this summer, not to mention The Eagles or Pearl Jam. However, with 4 Jovi shows, Tom Petty, Warped Tour (a traveling festival), and Green Day tickets recently purchased, I could never justify it.

6. The live experience is always tops. I love seeing the artists passionately delivering their songs, and the idea of being somewhere with a group of people (whether it be 200, 20,000, or 80,000) who are there for the same reason I am, and who get the same songs I do.

7. Love people asking about shows. Hate it when people say "You really like (Insert Band)? They suck." No jackass, I'm paying money because I hate them.

Depends. There was a time when I saw two shows a month. Now maybe one a year.

Quote:

Lot's of reasons. Depends on the bands. I go to see every PJ concert in Seattle (provided I can snag a ticket which is sometimes absolutely impossible), then there are other bands I only need to see once. I have a friend who lives for concerts and depending on how cozy we are, I tag along.

Quote:
Do you always honestly enjoy it? Does having a show on the horizon sustain you?
No to both questions. As I said, sometimes I have ulterior motives, like a guy I like. Sometimes, I buy tickets and when the time comes, I just don't want to go out (my neighbors love those times). During the times when I go to loads of gigs, it turns into a hassle and I know I need to lay it off for a couple of years...

Quote:

At my age, I can say I really don't yearn to see more. If I want to see a band, I buy a ticket. Except for PJ - there are shows that I can't get tickets for and that really bothers me. I've seen so many shows I can't count them (and many that I can't remember).

Quote:

Lot's. Often I get a different appreciation than what I get from listening to an album. Sometimes, it makes me hate the band (Killers). Usually it touches me emotionally in different ways than an album would.

Quote:

No. Why would that bother me? At my age, lots of people think it's rather weird to still go to concerts - especially if they are NOT the typical U2 or Rolling Stones concert that people my age usually go to. But I couldn't care less. I've seen Snow Patrol in a tiny club when nobody had heard of them (thanks to our one and only jimbonjovi) People thought I'm weird - they aren't too off base on that one .....
