Default Coldplay - What is with them?

I suppose I just don't "get" them. Why are they so popular? Their music is bland, boring and depressing. Chris Martin is an egotistical dick. What am I missing with them?

No idea.

It seems everything they do, they're hailed as "musical geniuses".

The only song I like is Clocks, but even with that, the lyrics are daft.

I think it's just the usual media thing - they tell ppl they're great so ppl think they must be and have to listen to them.

Or something like that.

Don't know why - they're not exactly very rock'n'roll.

No, never said it was either - Jovi as a band are - but LH wasn't and was never meant to be. But this is a Coldplay thread so I'm just going to talk about them.

What really amazes me is how arrogant Chris Martin is. I remember the first ever interview I read with them in Q years back and he actually said something like "we'll never be up there with the likes of Bon Jovi", but now he thinks he walks on water and has the biggest band in the world.

Which, erm, they don't really - but the media seem determined to turn them into it.

I love them, great band. Their songs are meaningful...I don't see them as dull at all. Sure, some of them are slightly depressing, but hey. I think they are one of the best.

I like the music I've heard from them (like, all the singles after their first album ... Yellow and Trouble never really did anything for me), but not enough to actually buy anything of theirs. They're listenable enough, they've got some fairly decent hooks, and songs like The Scientist are genuinely moving. That's about as far as I go though, they're not IMO nearly exciting enough to get more of a reaction out of me, not when I've got stuff like Jeff Buckley or Damien Rice to listen to instead, and not when I probably should check out more Radiohead stuff and see what the fuss is about there

easy to listen to inoffensive (or bland if you must) music appeals to a massive range of people.

amy winehouse anyone? bryan adams, even bon jovi... it's coffee table music anyone can "get" there's not much effort needed to listen and appreciate them as opposed to someone like say floyd or radiohead where there's alot more to their music than just 4 chord pop songs.

that's pretty much it.

walrus what you need to do right now is: go to amazon and buy the bends. wait for it to arrive, listen, thank me.
