As far as the Freddie Mercury Tribute performance and it being terrible????? Definately very biased view. Their performance was one of the highlights of the show and the reaction of the audience reflected that. They were the only opening band to use their stage time to perform a tribute to Queen with the exception of doing More Than Words. The rest of the bands opening that night played their own material, though Def Leppard did Now I'm Here with Brian May (their performance, which included Animal and Let's Get Rocked, was also the introduction of Vivian Campbell as their new guitarist.)
No they didn't do One Vision. They did a well executed medley of Bohemian Rhapsody, Keep Yourself Alive, I Want To Break Free, Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle, Another One Bites The Dust, We Will Rock You, Stone Cold Crazy & Radio Ga Ga. It all came together as a very moving and emotional tribute.
As far as the performance being terrible....I don't know what you were listening for..but you had 4 guys who are big Queen fans and the singer is not Freddie. It was raw and very energetic. You don't have a sold out stadium audience singing along with you loud and clear and raising their hands unprompted during Radio Ga Ga when you are terrible. It was almost a religious experience where the stadium and the band came together as one to sing out to the heavens to Freddie.
It's unfortunate the recent DVD re-issue of the show cut the opening bands out and the Extreme performance in particular. I'd be happy to share the mpg of this performance with anyone whos on the DC++ Hub. It's just one of those performance where even if you don't know the band or the music they are playing you can sense the power of the performance and know that you are witnessing an special moment in concert history.

Yes, you're right. I'm VERY biased when it comes to Queen. I have been a fan for over 15 years. No, they were not Freddie, but I think an artist should be smart and sing songs that they can sing, they picked songs that were just not right for the vocal range capability, as did Seal. Freddie had an amazing range, he could hit a high note and go straight into a low one, not many singers can and I think if you are going to sing Queen's songs, you should pick one that is compatible to your vocal range and somewhat less strenuous.
I didn't say that Extreme were that bad, I think I reserved that for Axl and Seal, but they weren't terrific.
As for the hand clapping with Radio GaGa?? Any Queen fan will do that automatically when that song is played, whether the song is sung well or not. I find myself doing that even when driving!
The concert was beautiful, I cried the whole way through. I was very touched by all the artists that wanted to pay homage to Freddie as a performer and as a person, but even though it was an emotional evening, I can still tell if someone sang their songs badly or not!
