I'm not going to contest the rest as it's a matter of opinion. However, as a singer, that is wrong. Vocals are a form of instrument, it's just one that is permanently attached to your body. You can do everything with your voice that you can with an instrument. You still have to work at making it better, you still have to find the right pitch etc. Anyone can sing off the top of their head, but to be a professional musician you have to be able to PLAY your voice.

And as for playing with the orchestra, as well as tempo, what about dynamics? There's no point blaring it out while the back row violin has a sensitive solo. And pitch? There's no point wacking it up five octaves like you can do without the orchestra because it will sound stupid when the orchestra is playing it five octaves lower. There are a lot of variables involved, and I don't think many people realise just how difficult it is for a band to play with an orchestra.

Since it's the band's songs that matter here, since it's those songs the orchestra 'just' accompanies, since the band is ONLY 4 or 5 instruments compared to the orchestra, since it's mainly the drummer of the band who has to keep it going by keeping the tempo straight, since an orchestra is musically and technically a much more complex and diverse thing than a band, and since an orchestra would do a lot of crap behind a metal band if they'd play without monitoring it just is MORE difficult for an orchestra to play with a band.

I agree that it is more difficult for the orchesta, definitely. I just think it is also very difficult for a band and more credit to anyone who can do it.

The only one in the band who has any trouble is the drummer, who has to follow the conductor. The rest of the band follows the drummer. And they don't have to change the keys or any of that stuff, it's up to the arranger to make the orchestra sound good.

And singing isn't playing. It's singing. Opera singers are not instrumentalists, or players or musicians, they are singers. Singers sing, musicians play. I've sang all my life and played guitar for 18 years and they have nothing in common.

It's actually pretty easy. Singers sing, musicians play.

Ever played in a rock band with an orchestra?

And fine, call it what you want, but singing at the top level is just as challenging as playing an instrument.

Actually, yes, I have. Not a symphony orchestra, but orchestra just the same.

No one said it wasn't challenging, but it isn't playing.
