Oh that reminds me. I keep meaning to buy a couple Randy Newman CD's, what's a good starting point?

Absolutely without doubt "12 songs" first. Kinda a greatest hits, but performed solo at the piano a couple of years back. The simplicity of the arrangements really suits the understated humour. Lovely lovely album.

Then Sail Away. A classic. And it has Political Science on it.

And then for me Nilsson Sings Newman, just to hear his music in the hands of a really ****ing gifted singer.

I think you're thinking of "The Randy Newman Songbook: Volume 1"
"12 Songs" was the name of his second album, that came out in 1970.
