I don't think I agree with this at all. To me there are two general RHCP eras: pre Californication and post Californication. I don't find Mothers Milk soo much different from Freaky Stiley for example. And both Californication and By The Way are very pop.
Stadium Arcadium, on the other hand, has a lot of pop influences and is probably the most melodic record of all without going completely pop as with the two previous releases. If anything it brings the two eras together - going back to more funk, but retaining some of the melodic pop qualities.
