AFI review
Camden Electric Ballroom, 25th May 2006
So I did write an incredibly long AFI review the other day, but my bastard computer deleted it ... soooo, I'm just gonna do a shortish one now cos I can't be bothered to write it all out again! I don't even know if anyone's really familiar with AFI, but ah well ...
Opening band: Rainy Day **** Parade
Good points:
- Musically pretty damn tight ... heavy, lumbering jams
-Drummer was absolutely awesome
-Sound levels and quality were just about perfect
-Singer was ... interesting anyways. All shouting, very little in the way of melody at all. Voice was very impressive, especially with the vocal reverb thing he had going on
Bad points:
-Couldn't make out a single lyric
-Like I said earlier, just about no melody ... so singing / shouting got pretty repetetive
- Singer was a bit weird, took to wandering around the stage looking lost or hiding in the shadows at the side of the stage during instrumental breaks
Overall: 7/10 I'll say
The main act: AFI
Good points:
- Awesome band with awesome songs!
- Great atmosphere, people were loving it
- Cool venue ... Camden Electric Ballroom, can't have held more than about 5000 absolute maximum ... maybe less
- Davey's voice is just as good live as on record ... and damn, does the guy have energy! High kicks, jumps, falling to the floor, screaming , swinging the mic around ...
- Jade Puget is cool as ****, in a completely effortless manner ... 'nuff said
- The set was very Sing The Sorrow heavy, which was good for me cos its the album I'm most familiar with
- Miseria Cantare is a great opening, with the crowd shouting the "You are now one of us!" bits
- Was incredibly surprised and pleased that they played This Time Imperfect, although if they had played the prelude as well it would have made it even better!
- Awesome cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven, with Davey thanking Britain for giving the world The Cure afterwards
-Great light show
- Two new songs were played: Miss Murder and Kill Caustic
- The encore may have only been two songs ... but oh my God, what an encore! Death Of Seasons, finishing with Davey alone on the floor, with just a spotlight on him howling into the mic; and a song which I didn't know at the time but which sounded great and which I have since discovered was God Called In Sick Today, which ended with Davey climbing over the railing and WALKING ON TOP OF THE CROWD. them holding him up and him still singing! One of the coolest things I've ever seen ... tried to get a picture but he climbed back down just before I could take it, the bastard!
Bad points:
- Set was a bit too short, only about an hour and a half in total
- Seemed a bit too much like the Davey and Jade show ... the other two are great musicians, but they seemed to be a bit too much in the background
- A personal thing, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to be in the moshpit or not, and as such avoided it ... and now kinda wish I hadn't. Dammit. I'm becoming too much of a wimp in my old age
Setlist:
Miseria Cantare
Leaving Song pt. II
Dancing Through Sunday
Ever and a Day
Bleed Black
Kill Caustic
Rabbits Are Roadkill
File 13
Just Like Heaven (Cure cover)
Single Second

Overall I'd give them a 9/10 I think!
Wow, that was longer than I expected ... pray I don't somehow delete it before I can post it!
