technically, he's very sound. pull offs are pretty much the first thing you learn :s although his tapping technique is mastered perfectly. can't help but find it boring though. 5minutes of that is enough to send me to sleep.

So if i get you right, you say that he's good at the technical stuff, but it's the tapping part he is best at?

no. he's an all round very proficient player. some of his tapped arpeggios appeal to me but on the whole he's fairly boring.

gaz: it's all about preference. what one player is good at another may not be so it's all just weighing up what you find most pleasing to listen to. you could do some kind of testing but then how would you measure it? speed isn't a good indicator and pretty much everything else you could do (improv. competitions etc) are highly subjective.

Hi there,

I think Vai is technically incredible. I like Steve Vai, but also Joe Satriani. People who usually like both favour Vai's technique, but Joe's attitude of making music. So, each guitarist has something that will draw admirers. I for one like Vai's playing, and saw him live. It was excellent. I have to agree, it's about preference. Is there a way to compare Vai with Sambora, yes, just find your own criterion. I like them both, one mainly for the guitar athletics, the other for the feeling I get from his play.

best wishes,

Rob
