How do you feel about the role (male) rock musicians set your sons? Is the excess tolerated because they make powerful, creative music or is it simply one rule for the boys, one for the Britneys?

Ha, I was thinking the same thing and even said something, but instead I got halfway through a sarcastic sentence then decided against it.

Yeah - there's a good one. I'd have to disagree with Dan on this. I do have a daughter and she no more listens to Britney Spears than I do. I also have much older sons and I certainly didn't quit listening to my beloved rock and roll because many of them were bad role models. I listen to the music - not to adore the rock personna (or the musician).

Just like anything else to do with your kids you need to have an open dialog - constantly. I watched TV with them and we discussed what we saw. When my elder son fell in love with the Doors I told him about Jim Morrison masturbating onstage - and asked if he felt that was appripriate behavior. He thought not but he still liked their music - as I do.

My daughter was a fan of the Spice Girls (in their first incarnation). I let her be about it and did what I did with the older kids - continued to expose her to all sorts of music. They were taken to symphonies and opera and jazz and rock concerts all the while they were growing up. Thank god it wasn't as expensive as it is these days.

One benefit to me with all this openmindedness was that I also was exposed to "their" music. I became a fan of Bon Jovi in just this way - introduced by my second son. My daughter introduced me to The Barenaked Ladies and to Guster both of whom I really like. My eldest son introduced me to The Black Crowes and Tori Amos.

In return I introduced them to the large catalog of classic rock and roll.

One trend that I hate is typical though. The guys get away with all the bad behavior - drugs - promiscuity - unfaithfullness etc. Let a woman do the same thing and she's a slut and a whore. This attitude disgusts me frankly. I don't care for a lot of the music that many woman make - not because of their behavior - but because I don't care for most of the music. I love Patti Smith - I love Heart - these women rock rather than whine and I can appreciate that.

I can promise you that if anyone goes out and shave their head, take drugs, and esp. party with Paris Hilton because that's what Britney did, they're already not right in the head. Just like the millions of people we hear about everyday that lock their girlfriends in their boots, and drive off a bridge because that's what Eminem does in one of his songs, right? -_^ Britney, along with any other celebrity, is not resposible for children's actions. They are not here to help you raise your children...that's the parent's jobs. And you get to chose (up until a certain age) who and what they are exposed to. And you have the amazing ability to communicate with them and tell them what is right and wrong. Britney isn't going to make them go out and do those things unless they're already disturbed in the first place.

Or is it because she shows her flesh and is in touch with her sexuality? Is she not meant to wear whatever she wants? Is she meant to just be "good" for the sake of the world's children. Oh please. As already stated what about these rockstar's? You know, the drug taking, screwing all these women, walking around stage wiht no shirt on, etc. But they're allowed to because they're male, right? It's double standards. If I go out tonight and screw 2 men I'll be branded a slut. Or if I even maybe showed some flesh some people would probably brand me a slut. But some man go out there and do the same thing and they're "cool" and "big" and it's all a big joke. **** that.

Britney really is not the worst role model a girl can have, lol.

Maybe not. But she does make shit music.

And she makes shit music in your opinion... But to plenty of people around the world she makes great music. Just like any other artist out there.

But yeah, I only like a handful of her songs personally. She's good to dance to though. But dancing music and music I listen to because I think it's great are two different things really. I think there's only about 5 of her songs I would actually listen to because I like them. Makes sense?

When you think about it, most of (my) musical heros are ex-junkies, but I don't strap my arm and put a needle in it just cause King Keef Richards used to do so.
I don't get this "good/bad" rolemodel case. Is Aguilera, a better rolemodel? I can't say I'll agree on that one...

Christina is more slutty and whatever than Britney has ever been.

A hell of a lot more talented too but still...
