I don't think anyone listening to that interview could ever think that Richie is ever coming back. I never thought he would be back myself long before I had ever heard this interview. However, the interview clearly spells out the reason he is never coming back.

I think David has always been a little more blunt about why Richie is really out. Jon has always been vague about it, which is probably best for all parties. And by now everyone has stuck to an official story. But it always seemed to me Richie expected to be able to come back at some point and Jon was basically done with it.

This is a recent Japanese interview. The questions are in Japanese but Richie obviously comes up and Tico makes reference of them trying to get hold of Richie after he left and could never get a straight answer from him. I guess in the end you just stop asking the question.
