'Keep The Faith' is fantastic from this show. Love the energy! Vocals aren't the best but the rest of the song really makes up for that.

That's nonsense.

He doesn't bother to practice between tours. He started smoking heavily. He doesn't like to rehearse. The list goes on.

The simple fact that he's making people pay to see him singing like that and thinking he can get away with it shows that he does the minimum.

The list really doesn't go on...

He makes albums between tours and performs with the KOS so it's not like he doesn't use his voice.

What do rehearsals have to do with his voice at this point? That's just his choice. They rarely did them from the beginning. He uses that time to warm up his voice privately.

The smoking thing could be questionable. We should really have a separate thread comparing artists who smoked and didn't... also, artists who lost their voices that didn't smoke....

I think constant strain and steroid shots during the 80's just caught up with him...

Bon Jovi were only a band for 12 years when they played that set. 12 years ago from today was Bounce... Can you imagine if their career was from Bounce to BB.

Also up to 1995, 6 studio albums, 2 solo albums (Jon&Richie), and 1 compilation. = 9 albums

Now 13 studio albums, 5 solo albums, 5 compilation, 4 disc box = 28 albums

They've done 3 times more after the golden years then they did prior.

The interplay with the two guitarists is nice. I think since Jon couldn't fake a Richie-like comradery with either of them for the stage show and since he needed to spice up the show, he allowed the dueling guitars.

I can't imagine going out on stage in front of thousands with a voice that isn't reliable but obviously an arena show is more than "the voice" since audiences and reviews focus on the crowd reaction and the energy. A lot of arena shows are 'smoke and mirrors' with a cast and singer who can deliver it.

It's not about using your voice. It's about training it to stay in shape. If you watch these KOS shows in between tours and pay attention to Jon's voice, you clearly see that he doesn't train his voice during those periods. That's why he always sounds bad at the beggining of each tour.

When I said that he doesn't rehearse, I didn't say it has anything to do with his voice. It's just an example to show that Jon is lazy when it comes to practicing, rehearsing, etc …

The smoking in Jon's case it's not questionable. It took a big toll on his voice. Take a look at the 1995 and 1996 performances. There's a big difference, his voice in 1996 is thinner than in 1995. And that's when he started smoking.

Surely the abuse and steroids from the 80's have done their damage, but he still had an amazing voice in 1993 and 1995. In 2008, you could see that he started using some techniques and changed his singing style, which is a sign of coaching and training. Unfortunately, it seems that he didn't continue, because in 2013, he was singing like an amateur, without any techniques, just shouting out the notes. It doesn't take a lot of singing knowledge to notice that.

The steroids would have ruined it in the short notice, not 10 or 20 years after. As you said, he had an amazing voice in 1993 and 1995, and let's not forget those solo gigs in 1998 when .

Jon's 1998 performances weren't all like that Hush one though. He still had some power and moments but his overall voice wasn't the same anymore.

I see the complete opposite. First in regards to his smoking, he didn't really start smoking heavily until after the TD tour when he starting filming his first major role in the Leading Man... In your 95 / 96 example, that time line doesn't really add up... plus, I think it would take a few years to take effect. It's not like, you smoke a cigarette and your voice is instantly shot the next day forever...

Once Jon recouped from his SWW 80s steroid days, his vocie was stronger than ever but he also had youth on his side. His voice was still higher and again, things take time to break down. He didn't blow his chords out to the point of surgery but he stripped them raw... it's like any athlete who gets hurt, rehabs, and continues to play. Sure he'll be just as good in the short run but once age kicks in and your body breaks down, those past injured parts deteriorate much faster.

Jon's late 2000 singing technique might be the correct way to sing and in Jon's eyes, he is singing better than ever because is technique is right.... Jon's range has been shot for a while now. Sure he sang better during TC tour but there were some real painful moments as well. Even dating back further. The LH tour was no picnic either...

Jon is not lazy but just has different priorities. His voice now might be the best it will ever get. He might be maxed out. According to Jon, he still takes lessons. I think there is something hidden in this whole mystery that we are just not aware of because it never went public... I could see a professional examining his vocie and telling him that his vocie is deteriorating and he has no choice but to sing the way he does now...

I think he lost his natural gift to sing and now has a regular voice like anyone else who can't sing... He might have had to start over from scratch and learn to re sing from scratch...

You may be right about his voice and efforts but he actually started smoking a lot while filming 'Moonlight and Valentino'. Before the TD tour....

This. Plus the fact that the Leading Man was shot in January of '96 and Jon said that he had picked up the habit of constant smoking there since he was so bored between the takes.
In the mid-90's the setlists consisted of mostly vocal demanding songs and it's the same with any athlete - you still have a good basic condition, but once something hinders your capabilities (like constant smoking does on the vocal chords) you notice the difference when you have to push yourself to the limit.

Supersonic 09-28-2015 05:55 PM

Aloha !

Doesn't anyone else find it amusing how there's an analogy presented about Jon's vocals by a guy who admitted he hasn't got a clue about singing, yet presents it as the absolute truth. It's as if I were to tell someone what's wrong with his car without ever having opened the bonnet. It's utter nonsense.

Jon has always been a smoker, just not a regular one. He picked up the habbit in 1995 but even before he used to smoke the occasional cigarette. It's just that in 1996 his smoking became very obvious when he went out on tour.

What a lot of people fail to realize is how Jon's vocals have been getting worse with every tour. Yes, that includes the Keep The Faith tours, it includes the 1995 tours. There's a big difference in between the first show of the Keep The Faith tour and the last one. By the time the tour hit Australia he was no longer capable of nailing songs like In These Arms like he used to. There's a reason why it got tuned down to D even in 1996.

With every subsequent tour and album his vocals got worse. The only difference is that he was capable of working around it, which he just no longer isn't. He's got no range anymore, and his voice sounds like the prime example of a guy who's smoked too many cigarettes, drank too much alcohol and did too many shows. But if that's taking care of your voice, then yeah, he's done a good job.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
