I wouldn't be opposed to Jon singing live on the verses and going 100% backing track on the choruses.

I'm just very attentive to detail. Everyone is saying that Jon planned that since the inception of the tour and I'm not 100% convinced that's entirely true. Why just Prayer and not other songs too? He could have gotten through the verses, given the chorus to the band and use the playback on the key change as he did for years.

His voice didn't give completely out at the show until the song before Prayer, so there was no need to use playback for any other songs that night. I doubt very much Jon would use tapes unless there was absolutely no other choice, which was the case that night. He didn't know until the middle of Have A Nice Day that his voice was going to go. You can clearly hear it and see his reaction in the video. He didn't decide the day before that he was going to use playback for Prayer that night, he decided 2 minutes before the song started.

The setlist is pretty stacked with songs in the range he can "handle" (or at least the songs he can handle more than the old school songs) so it'd make perfect sense Prayer with it's key change is still needed. Keep in mind they're still singing live on top of the pre-recorded vocals, it doesn't replace it .

Was this the performance of HAND where he blew out his voice? 🙉

Yes, it was show #13 in Houston:

As one can see by the videos that had been linked at the time, they did a thorough job of removing memories of that night.

Yes, I was trying to find the video, but couldn't!

I don't think I ever realised that they did Wanted after Prayer that night. Have to wonder how that sounded...

Thanks so much. Yes, very hard to find any videos of those performances.

I completely forgot they did Wanted after Prayer too. Presume there was a lot of turning the mic to the crowd.

There's a edit of highlights from the night here, but the original videos seem to be gone. You can hear Jon blow out his voice right at the beginning of Have A Nice Day and then you can hear the playback kick in on Prayer after the first line...
