Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers "Money Became King"

"If you reach back in your memory
A little bell might ring
'Bout a time that once existed
When money wasn't king
If you stretch your imagination
I'll tell you all a tale
About a time when everything
Wasn't up for sale

There was this cat named Johnny
Who loved to play and sing
When money wasn't king

We'd all get so excited when
John would give a show
We'd raise the cash between us
And down the road we'd go
To hear him play that music
It spoke right to my soul
Every verse a diamond
Every chorus gold
The sound was my salvation
It was only everything
Before money became king

Well I ain't sure how it happened
And I don't know exactly when
But everything got bigger
And the rules began to bend
And the TV taught the people
How to get their hair to shine
And how sweet life can be
If you keep a tight behind
And they raised the cost of living
And how could we have known
They'd double the price of tickets
To go see Johnny's show

So we hocked all our possessions
And we sold a little dope
And went off to rock and roll

We arrived there early
In time to see rehearsal
And John came out and lip-synched
His new lite beer commercial
And as the crowd arrived
As far as I could see
The faces were all different
There was no one there like me

They sat in golden circles
And waiters served them wine
And talked through all the music
And paid to John paid little mind
And way up in the nosebleeds
We watched him on the screen
They'd hung between the billboards
So cheaper seats could see

Johnny rock that golden circle
An all those VIP's
And that music that had freed us
Became a tired routine
And I saw his face in close-up
Trying to give it all he had
And sometimes his eyes betrayed him
You could see that he was sad
And I tried to rock on with him
But I slowly became bored
Could that man on stage
With everything
Somehow need some more?

There was no use in pretending
No magic left to hear
All the music gave me
Was a craving for lite beer
As I walked out of the arena
My ears began to ring
And money became king"

Crushgen24/88 10-25-2009 08:51 PM

How prophetic does that song seem, in relation to the 02.

very much so , all this is so sad. someone in the Jovi camp needs to grow a set and address what has happened.

If we can keep this pressure up they cant ignore us. We have to.

And we will! Count me in!

Signed. And for the record, I will be buying two tickets to Giants, because the prices there aren't that bad. But the prices for the European dates are obscene, and you guys don't deserve that shit.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I think Giants is fairly priced when considering other ticket prices but O2 simply is disgusting. You guys shouldn't be penalized for the failure of the economy/ U.S. issues. Plus, I'm sure the band is well aware of the currency conversion:rolleyes: Again, not somthing you guys should have to make up for in ticket prices.

After all what happened this day I just felt I needed to write down my feelings about it in some way and I wanted to share it. Please excuse grammar mistakes, I'm still a student and English isn't my native language. Post critics, laugh about it, do whatever you want with it, but please write hones answers...

From the first time their beat got me,
it was jailed deep in my ear,
anytime I was facing trouble,
it helped me fighting down my fear.

Why?
My hope is fading
Why?
My heart keeps bleeding
So many moments, just bursting in my memories,
sitting in the backseat, that's not worth it...

As time went on I started to understand,
through shining love and breaking hearts,
these guys will be my life until the end,
nothing would ever tear us apart.

Why?
My hope is fading
Why?
My heart keeps bleeding
So many moments, just bursting in my memories,
sitting in the backseat, that's not worth it..

But the times just changed,
I saw cash signs in their eyes,
Those emotions felt so plain
I knew it was time to split our lives

Why?
My hope is fading
Why?
My heart keeps bleeding
So many moments, just bursting in my memories,
sitting in the backseat, that's not worth it..

From now on I saved my money,
'cause I felt they lost their soul,
silently cryin' I waved my last goodybe
to my old Kings of Rock'n'roll...

Why?
My hope is fading
Why?
My heart keeps bleeding
So many moments, just bursting in my memories,
sitting in the backseat, that's not worth it..

OMG - this is exactly how I feel, it sums my feelings about Bon Jovi word for word (except I've never sold dope to see "John"). Thank you for posting this!

Not necessarily, but it does get worldwide attention.

thedon31 10-27-2009 12:04 AM

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one feeling like this.
I bought 2 tickets on Saturday as I had O2 Priority..until the morning on ticketmaster, I had no idea what prices would be but I go quite often to the O2 so figured around £40 for a standing ticket.....Never did I expect £200 + for a SEATED floor ticket !!! I was gobsmacked.

I looked for the cheapest which was £45 in the gods and I watched a gig there before and won't do it again. I managed to secure 2 tickets on the side which were £75 each + the booking fee totalled £172.

I have never paid that before tickets...Even the expensive U2 ticket was £65 and I managed to get to the gold circle and that was well worth the money but not this.

I'm p*****d that I bought them now but think I'm going to return them. It's just not worth the money and for a while I've felt this band have been getting more and more corporate and I think they've just soldout to the $$$$.

I'm dissapointed as i dont believe they are that good for this money and being all about the band from the street blah blah blah is just a load of s***e.

I've loved this band for years and am slowly getting the point where out of protest, I'm not going to bother with their new releases.....

And artists like this wonder why people illegally download music !!!!!

cdparky 10-27-2009 01:01 AM

^^ in all likelihood you won't be able to cancel them. Very slim possibility if you contact them within 24 hours but nearly every time they will not do refunds.

Not especially but they deserve some bad press for what they are doing.

danfan 10-27-2009 07:14 AM

I'd sign it, but I don't live in Europe and had no intention of going. I know the fan club packages in the US are ridiculous (another reason I no longer am a member.) I'm just saying screw it, and buying mid price seats. I've been front row before. As long as I'm there and my nose doesn't bleed, I'm OK.

I love that song, and I didn't even have to change the name ;)

Crushgen24/88 10-27-2009 07:21 AM

What really sucks here is that the US ticket prices are pretty fair, especially when compared to other artists at their level, yet Europe is getting ****ed.

$153 for good seats is hardly fair, but yeah, compared to that slut Madonna, I guess it isn't bad.

It's very embarassing though for a band that talks so much about the working man, and for a band that supposedly cares so much about it's fans.

.

I don't only consider the pit good. The price scale for Giants was approx (I may have some of the cent amounts off) 32.60, 66.00, 96.00, and 150.00 with there being tickets priced at each amount in all levels of the stadium.

kenobi_on_a_prayer 10-27-2009 10:08 AM

Brian; great song and very apt.

Anyway. Is it worth sending some impassioned e-mails to Bob Lefsetz?

http://www.lefsetz.com/

He has something like 10,000+ on his mailing list. If we can get him to write about this issue.........

As they say, all publicity is good. And this is more of an industry publicity rather than just Perez Hilton. :p

Don`t get me wrong.............i`m pissed but was willing to wait another year to catch them on a stadium tour but now i`ve heard the record i`m ****in` fuming over this O2 fiasco.......................

jbjhand 10-27-2009 11:53 PM

 Completely fu*ked off. These prices are way of control.
Got a fkn great album that i dont even want to listen to now cause im so pissed off with this rip off crap. Im being priced out of watching my fav band and it really fu*king sucks.

supersezzie 10-28-2009 01:24 AM

I can't bring myself to listen to the album in case I like it as much as everyone else...because I know how pi**ed it'll make me too! Petition signed and email sent, and FB group joined too.

As for the point that people will still go so it won't help making a stand, I'm hoping the numbers are increasing each yr as the discontent has grown. Last yr, I moaned, but I bought. This yr, I refuse. I bumped into some other ex-BJ fans at the BSC gig (see below!) and we had all gone to every tour for yrs and decided not to this yr. So who knows...maybe support will be strong enough this time?

I've switched to Black Stone Cherry - awesome band, just seen two of their UK gigs at £15 a tkt both times, with meet and greet after, for an awesome show with more energy than the CERNE partical collider thingy when it's working!

What's sad is not the fact that I've switched my loyalties for the first time ever, after 15yrs, but the fact that they've lost me to the point where I'm not even sad about it. I'm just plain pi**ed.

I understand exactly where you are coming from. For me, it is like an old friend has betrayed me. I have been a fan since I was 18 - now 41 and feeling really annoyed , but also very glad that I did not rejoin the fanclub. I usually get sucked in around tour time esp since they are definetly coming back to Oz but I am just getting normal everyday seats this time around. And if they are too expensive then for the first time ever I will not be going.
After seeing Pink for $99 (australian) and the amazing show she puts on I realised how much Jon rips off the fans.

I dont need to be front and centre anymore

Exactly how i feel, i can't listen to it anymore, no need to hurt myself more ...

UKjovi 10-28-2009 12:25 PM

This is what i wrote on BS :- I'm not sure if Jon or Matt are fully understanding how i and many others are feeling at the moment. So i have tried to put this into some sort of context. Just imagine Jon or Matt you went to see your favourite cousin who lives a few states away from you. Last year you flew there for $500 say for argument's sake. This year you go to buy a ticket and its $20000. I know this is a vast exaggeration but i am trying to get across the enormity of how it would affect you as it has done us. I know prices go up sure but to this level? So can you please see our point of view that it feels as though you are trying to grab as much money as you possibly can from us.
It got ignored of course and now i see they have taking the piss even more with the Paris show when will it end?

livelovelaugh 10-28-2009 12:48 PM

I really cannot express how upset and let down I feel about the boys and the O2 gig! Bon Jovi saw in my 30th and I was so hoping they would bring in – cough,” that “Birthday to! ;)

I don’t understand why they also have to do Golden Circle tickets/VIP tickets! Why can they just leave be! Many other bands manage to cope with out this extra “expensive” package! I know I will probably end up buying this new album as I feel I have to. But I will choke when I hand the cash over!

I’d love to know why they feel the need to start “robbing” there fans! This is really how it seems to me!

I know it’s a totally different band and different music! (my taste is varied lol):p. Take That managed to put on a HUGE tour, one of the biggest I have ever seen. They had lots of crew/dancers etc. Far more than I have ever seen at a BJ gig! They took there tour all over England and I still only paid about £38 a ticket. None of this Golden Circle nonsense and I managed to get near the stage!

lh2010 10-28-2009 01:26 PM

Completely shocked by the prices, never been able to attend a concert of theirs before so really excited upon hearing the o2 2010 dates as they fit in perfectly with my schedule, unfortunately the prices do not! Whilst I wasn't expecting to pay a price I would to go see a act at my local venue these are still ridiculous.

Their Washington DC concert ties in with my holiday there, £30 for the cheapest tickets and Daughtry are the special guest, so no consideration needed as to whether to see them whilst in the US or not!

UKjovi 10-28-2009 03:13 PM

I wonder how fast tickets will sell on Friday in the G sale??

supersezzie 10-28-2009 04:22 PM

Sorry to 'spam' but in case no-one reads my separate post, I'm trying to get a trending topic on Twitter...so if anyone wants to help spread the word, tweet with the tag #BJripoff and let's get some more publicity going!
