You were right to interpret the first picture as being a hand. The gas mask has no real consequence.

Ok it seems people are struggling with this one. It's fair enough I suppose as I did delibrately make it a hard one. So here's a few clues. Forget the gas mask, that has no consequence, but what is the guy doing? The third picture also provides a reasonable clue. That guy holding the scythe could well be death himself. The place looks desolate. What's he doing to it?
