The first few seconds, I thought: Wow, this could get interesting. But I agree with others here, it sounds like Jon is in speech therapy here. 20 to 25 years ago, this could've been one really good song!
And the production is too familiar by now.

Johny 11-01-2019 09:48 AM

It's not a bad song but I'mnot sure if it's good.. it'S different, that I appreciate. Jon doesn't sing it, he rather narrates it - another proof about the state of his voice :/
I appreciate that it's over six minutes but I'd like to have a solo in it. At least the guitars are present there.
I bought it off itunes to support the dogs :)

Are the official lyrics somewhere?

Potential music-wise. If only Shanks had taken it that one step further and made the guitars Teardrop style. There’s at least 3 missed chances for a decent solo and the song really screams for it.

Lyric-wise and singing-wise...terrible. Did at one time think ‘imagine if he sang the second chorus with his high voice ala Wedding Day’

Nevermind...listenable

jon-flp 11-01-2019 10:30 AM

An ok song. Surprised me the guitar in the intro...but that's all. And yes, Jon barely sang on it, he's talking all the time.

The part that was supposed to be the bridge...man, I don't remember a so long one. Cuts all the flow of the song.

The chorus is ok...but yes, should have gone to a higher level in the end to finish the song.

A few years in the past, a new BJ song would be on repeat during all friday...but the third time is enough for this one.

The vocals are really poor at the start of that bridge.

I just dont think we will get a great Jovi sounding song with Shanks at the mixing board

This couldve been a better song with 2 solos in it. Again Phil X is totally underused. Im beginning to think he didn't actually play on it. The guitars reek of Shanks.

Unbroken Lyrics

Unbroken · Bon Jovi
(01/11/2019)

[Verse 1]
I was born to be of service
Camp Lejeune just felt like home
I had honor, I found purpose
Sir, yes, sir
That's what I know
They sent us to a place I never heard of weeks before
When you're nineteen, it ain't hard to sleep
In the desert on God's floor
Close your eyes, stop counting sheep
You hear them bootcamp anymore

[Verse 2]
We were taught to shoot our rifles
Then in one, then side by side
Thought we’d be made as liberators
In a thousand year old fight
I got this painful ringing in my ear
From an IED last night
But no lead light humvee war machine, could save my sargeants life
Three more soldiers, six civilians
Need these words to come out right

[Chorus]
God of mercy, God of light
Seek your children from this life
Here these words, this humble plea
For I have seen the suffering
And with this prayer I’m hoping
That we, can be unbroken

[Verse 3]
It's 18 months now, I’ve been stateside
With this medal on my chest
But there are things I can't remember
And there are things I won't forget
I lie awake at night with dreams of devils shouldn’t see
I wanna scream, but I can't breathe
And Christ, I am sweating through these sheets
Where's my brothers? Where's my country?
Where's my how things used to be?

[Chorus]
God of mercy, God of light
Seek your children from this life
Here these words, this humble plea
For I have seen the suffering
And with this prayer I’m hoping
That we, can be unbroken

[Bridge]
My service dogs done more for me
Then the medication would
There ain't no angel that is coming to save me
But even if they could

[Verse 4]
Today, 22, would die from suicide
Just like yesterday, they're gone
I live my life for each tomorrow
So their memories will live on
Once we were boys, and we were strangers
Now we're brothers and we're men
Someday you’ll ask me, was it worth it to be of service in the end?
Well, the blessing, and the curses, yeah, I'd do it all again

[Outro]
Whoa-oh
Whoa-oh
Whoa-oh
Whoa-oh
Whoa-oh
Whoa-oh (Whoa)

Javier 11-01-2019 10:52 AM

I really like it!! I feel like it achieves what it sets out to, won't really criticize the vocals as I feel like this narration style suits both the song and Jon's current style but the instrumental parts could be given more chance to shine.

angelsambo 11-01-2019 10:58 AM

strong song,it could have been epic but it lacks of power, awful production the guitars are too low in the mix,the song screams for a solo

steel_horse75 11-01-2019 11:09 AM

Proceeds go to the dogs.

when they release the video of the song?

BonJovi100 11-01-2019 11:30 AM

If Jon's vocals were stronger in this song it could sound like "live Before You Die". I'm definitely glad Jon sounds like he sounds. It's harsh, without yeeh yeeh, without unnecessary pulling, etc. In this topic, less is more. I think that Shanks and Jon would be able to record it in the same way as the ending "Devil In The Temple" or "A Teardop To The Sea" .. I see no reason for such treatments here. I listen to this song all the time so it's good;)

Anyone know if the movie will be screened in theaters? Maybe there is a chance for an Oscar nomination:>

It's gonna have a short theater run in New York and LA before moving on to Netflix on Nov. 10...

Honestly I do like the new song. But I don't think I love it. We'll say how it ages, but at the very least it's raising money for a great cause

Walkerboy 11-01-2019 12:57 PM

Like the intro, like the outro, but dislike everything in between...
Hopefully this is a one-off and not part of the new album, because if Jon continues to make efforts at politically charged music then he's done and dusted for me. He's no Bruce...

That being said, it's good that the proceeds from it are going to charity.

It's confirmed that it's going on the new album. A video was posted by Jon on YouTube today giving the backstory to the song and said it's on the new album released in Spring.

I like it! better than I thought it would sound!

His vocals are what they are....interesting to see what 20/20 sounds, not much different vocally I guess.

PM, if any want the song. Though as LilJovi93 says it's on the 20/20 Album.

This tweet from Phil-X might support that line of thinking. It sounds like there may be more than one guitarist who's experienced "creative differences" with Jon. (Also makes me think that when Jon referred to a "Dry County-type" song, he probably wasn't referring to an epic guitar solo.) ;)

https://mobile.twitter.com/TheRealPh...44552519917568

I wonder what the issue is with longer, more interesting guitar solos.

Bounce7800 11-01-2019 02:54 PM

I can't say I'm a fan of this at all really, but I think that's mainly due to Jon's horrible vocals. It's just not pleasurable to listen to. Musically it sounds ok, but it just plods along and the lyrics are hardly subtle.

Captain_jovi 11-01-2019 02:55 PM

I think because it's not subtle....that's why I'm a little more into it than expected. I got really tired of open ended lyrics that could apply to everyone's lifestyle.

For as much as Shanks get shit for ruining the band production-wise I think Jon's voice is the MAJOR reason the songs are produced this way.

rolo_tomachi 11-01-2019 03:11 PM

I think Richie would have made a difference in this song. A shame. I said it a long time ago, Jon is allergic to the distorsion of electric guitars. The voice is worrying. Walls y WWWU estaba bien enmascarada.

rolo_tomachi 11-01-2019 03:13 PM

here it is

Cool jacket.

bonjovi90 11-01-2019 03:17 PM

It's almost hard to imagine that Walls and WWWU were recorded less than 2 years ago and it was the same "singer".

rokuli 11-01-2019 03:35 PM

There's some utterly strange filter(s) on Jon's vocals in Unbroken...I mean its just strange...but his voice is shot so they just might have used the magic "betterize" filter right there.... ;)

But yeah, I dig the chorus.

Johny 11-01-2019 03:36 PM

Where's the band in the video?

rolo_tomachi 11-01-2019 03:38 PM

It is possible that the album version is slightly different, they may add something, or mix it again.

At the same place where they probably were when the song was recorded :D

Alphavictim 11-01-2019 03:58 PM

I keep expecting the pre-chorus to kick into Room At The End of the World. Since that was a good song, it's not too bad.

The Youtube upload has them.

The song is... I dunno, the lyrical subject is pretty heavy for a band like BJ. To do this neither as a "yeah, USA, shoot em all, military is fun!" nor as a critical "man, **** that shit"... is very BJ, I guess - don't piss off anybody! But not sure if it works.

Musically - man, to have a KTF-era take on that track... the basic composition is damn solid, the production (lack of dynamics) and performance hold it back. Although I will say that JBJ's weathered vocals fit the outro better than an 80s howl ever could have. Although a higher harmony vocal in the chorus (Mr Sambora, you there?) certainly would have been nice.

jovifan93 11-01-2019 04:04 PM

I don't know. I've listened to it 3 times now, and it definitely grows on you. On first listen I thought WTF, but I'm beginning to like it for what it is. If the rest of the new album is in as low a key, it's not for me, but for a song about PTSD, it works quite well, I guess.

PanosBonJovi 11-01-2019 04:07 PM

Is Unbroken a 2020 single?

Savvi 11-01-2019 04:10 PM

Better than I expected. The lyrics are messy. It's a grower but still cant see myself listening to it all that much in a month or so.

Actually don't mind the production on it. Maybe because there's not that many layers stacked on top of each other.

Surprised the duration is at 5:20 given Phil's tweet about short songs. I know 5 minutes isn't that long, but I was expecting 3 min radio standard.

EDIT: Noticed the iTunes version is 6:07

God, this song begs for a Jon/Richie harmony. Your over-all thoughts echo mine big time.

LeaJovi 11-01-2019 04:34 PM

Heavy handed lyrics. Terrible singing. Basic melody.

Bon Jovi.

Maybe that's why the documentary credits Jon Bon Jovi instead of the band. ;)

And now I'm wondering if the next release will be something he did for this documentary:

Unbroken - YouTube

It is noteworthy, in my opinion, that even in the video edit, the first chorus kicks in at around TWO MINUTES into the song. The pop song standard is "first 50 seconds" (that's the way Max Martin does it usually). I'm not saying the song is the next Dry County nor that it is brilliant, but for all the crap you can give the band, it's not the same old this time around. If this was an album track, I'd see it getting major love even around these parts of the net.

And aye aye Captain, we seem to agree pretty often regarding the musical side of the band, haha.
