It is not the first time we have seen this trick. It was also used with One Wild Night Live Album, using a remix of the song, something stupid if you think about it, since it is a live album. |

Yeah the only reason they went to number one was ticket sales. The promo bump helped but I don't think the number of people who went "what? They put out a new album? Gotta check it out" was high enough to warrant that number 1. Touring wise I don't see too many issues, the demand aint what it used to be but album/single wise it's dire. One is put out to help sell the other it feels like :( |
Well, I think that Bon Jovi are that kind of band that when they release an album, there is something of interest. Sometimes the sales are not the expected ones, but it still sells. I mean, maybe they're not that massive anymore, but globally it's a lot of records.
About hitting the hit list, well I don't think we'll ever see a massive hit again. Never underestimate the guy, he can still show you he's capable of throwing a song and punching the table, not level massive as Its My Life or Always... but if a short-lived success like Have a Nice Day or Make A Memory. I mean a song that drives the initial sales of an album or tour. The problem with Bon Jovi is that always have to think about sales and success. :| |
40th Anniversary Boxset (2023)
How many copies worldwide did 2020 sell?
I don’t see another GH the last one has more songs than Crosswords but was somehow worse. Those new 4 songs were average as well. I don’t think Jovi have had a hit over in uk since Have a nice Day. So 16 years and no one’s buying a gh full of songs from lost Highway to 2020. I’m hoping the box set will decent but hoping it’s not all modern era songs that make it and there’s some older stuff but 100m covered that era. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

But Slippery is MASSIVE album. In its own league really! There's still money to be made on that one for sure...so mr. Bongiovi may aswell decide to do the anniversary box set every 10th (or even 5th?!) year...so fingers crossed for 2026..!!! :smilecol: |

Well, Jon can blame the 2020 sales failure on the pandemic. The acid test will be the next post-pandemic launch. The massive tours won't last much longer either, Jon's voice is almost dead. There will come a time when many will not return. . |
I just wish they'd try something different. Maybe having a more introspective and personal song as a single, take a risk. I know a lot of people would love to constantly have rock anthemic hits as singles, but I think doing something different has a chance at being more successful this time :) ....

But I'm right there with you. Retire the live your life stuff, do something weird as shit. |

The only way the band will get another massive hit is if they partner up with someone big, like Adele.
But really, they don't need another hit. They have so many under their belt. Just decent music will make me happy. And for me, there's enough decent music on the latter albums to keep me coming back, even if the overall quality isn't what it use to be. |
Let's talk a bit about the Box Set 40th annyversary.
What do you expect from Box Set 2023? Do you think there will be everything, or will they focus on the last 20 years? Do you think they will include the rest of the songs from the Sex Sells sessions that haven't been released yet? And... if it were up to you, what songs would you like to include? Thoughts. |
Anything but that overhyped Sex Sells album. Never thought these songs were particularly good to be honest.
The best thing would be a list of tracks we never had heard of before (or seen the titles somewhere) - like Burning Bridges which ended up far away from what we had been speculating on beforehand. |

Would be good to finally hear Sex Sells though - it must have been decent enough for it to be an album title track. I'd also like to hear The Sole Truth is good quality. |

Some songs that were recorded at a party to present Sex Sells, caught my attention although the sound of the pirated recording was horrible. Shadow Dancin' and Good Ain't Good Enough seemed interesting. I'm not saying that everything they put in the box set is what we already know, I prefer everything to be new, like Burning Bridges was, but if they go for 50 tracks, I wouldn't mind if some of these songs were included, along with Nothing. Oh, and that unicorn named Cadillac Man. I'm also curious to hear his version of It takes only One to Say Goodbye and Elvis In Vegas. I hope to be able to listen to Halo, Hurricane butterfly and all those songs that didn't do The Circle and What About Now. God, there is so much material that we have not heard and that we only know the title, I imagine there will be a lot songs that not even knew they existed. |
I'd hope for:
-In America -Fighter For Love -Good live version of The Sole Truth -Good live version of Cadillac Man -Water Into Wine (good quality) -Good quality version of the Sex Sells stuff -It Only Takes One To Say Goodbye -Cry (if it ever was recorded) -This Ain't Love, This Is Life (if it's different other than the titular lyric change) -Good / better quality versions of the Slippery outtakes (Deep Cuts The Night, Game of the Heart especially) -Stuff we aren't even aware exists |
In all honesty, I think Dom is right that it's always better if everything is completely new and unknown. But, I would not overlook some gems that we have heard in leaks.
My balance would be: 50 studio tracks[ (No Live Versions, no demo or alternative takes of already known songs): -40 completely unknown and never heard before tracks. -10 tracks that have not been officially released but that we have heard somehow, either live or in some poor sound quality leak, (example; Nothing, Life To Short, Gimme Some, Hurricane butterfly....) About Cadillac Man, I don't know if there is a studio or demo version, but if there isn't, I hope they at least have a good take of Soundcheck, and if not, then they should make a specific studio recording for it to be included in the box set. This might seem like an aberration to some, but I think that if the essence is respected, and even Jon calls Richie once and for all to collaborate at least on this project, it could be the icing on the cake. Jon said it would include several movies, well knowing that Hammersmith Odeon was recorded, it would be great if Cadillac Man along with other songs from this show were included in those movies. To me, this would be the top thing Jovi could do on a fan release like this. |

Do we know if band versions of 18, 43 and 48 exist?
|
Wow that's quite a list!

These are all songs pulled from ASCAP/BMI copyright registries. I guess Mona Lisa never hit that stage oddly. Though I don't think I've seen I STILL HAVE HOPE on any lists prior, where did you find that one?
|
Quote:
So I can say that this list was made by me, just out of curiosity so that all of us fans are aware of these songs. |

My gut says the majority of the new(er) songs registered over the last two years are either from Jon changing his publishing OR ear-marked for this project. |

I think it’s been confirmed already that there is no studio version “Cadillac Man” and was only ever played live. I would still take a live, soundboard recording or even a newly studio-recorded version. I think current version of the band (with or without Richie) could pull that off. Never got all the fuss over this song in particular but still a nice one to include in some form. |

I also found it on the ASCAP website, look for this information you will also find it. In this case my browser translated the name of the song to Portuguese, but the original name is "I Still Have Hope" |

Remember when that fake Burning Bridges track list was leaked? When we got to know the official track list, almost everything was unknown titles. Does anyone know if Jon ever recorded his version of the Elvis In Vegas song? If that exists, I'd love to hear it. . |
So today I listened the CD1 of the box set in honor of Jon Bon Jovi's birthday lol. And I gotta say I see far every time this new box set. Maybe they wanna repeat it in 2024.

Isn't "Armaggedon" just Mr Big Time? Aldo Nova co-wrote that one, no?

I'd went through the ASCAP catalog a few times this years... there are new titles popping up there each month. Last week I checked something round 8-10 "new" songs with Jon marked on them.

The majority of the songs added in the last year have been a mixed bag of co-writers but all seem to point to certain eras. Quite a few from the late 90's but the most common thing is co-writers. There hasn't been a single song added that Jon wrote alone in the last year-ish. I thought I read Jon moved from ASCAP to BMI a few years ago, that was about when a lot of songs appeared.
I'd lean towards the songs not being for the next band album but either retrospective or just publishing rights changing hands. I just don't see him working with Mark Hudson, Desmond Child and the like. That and I haven't seen too many songs added since 2020 came out unless I'm looking wrong but I check every few months. |
Ah with the co-writers I'll have to retract my suspicion about the songs being new. I can't really see him writing with anyone other than Shanks or Billy Falcon these days either (although it'd be interesting to hear what he would come up with working with someone else for a change nowadays).
|
Also - were the actual new album tracks registered that much before in the past? As far as I remember, our wild speculations rarely lead to a proper track list up until shortly before the release announcement.
