I'd rather have the option of seeing JBJ and friends than a postponed tour that might never get rescheduled.

That's great. I wouldn't. The fact that this band has been morphing into Jon's backing band for ten years or more, is exactly what I find so frustrating with Bon Jovi. But, you know what, I stuck by them. Saw them on tour, bought merch, bought albums... I have been loyal. It feels a little like that is getting taken for granted right now.
As for people being angry with Jon... he's not powerless, all of a sudden, when it suits him! Richie is HIS guitar player... he co-writes the songs and helps with production, sure but basically, he's a bit of a dreamer. This is JON's business... it feels like he believes we are HIS fans otherwise the tour wouldn't be continuing and he would have realised that a lot of people would be very pissed off, seeing Richie as such a major part of the reason why we book to see this band.
Jon runs the show. The message back to Richie on that day should've been... 'I've got your back but IF these shows are going to go ahead, I've got to give the fans more than 'personal issues'... ' Jon is the business head, Richie is dealing with something that is clearly severe enough that it keeps him from half a year on the road. Jon's the quarterback, Jon's the CEO, it's his name above the door, he should be insisting that a decent press release, that Richie approves, is put out to placate fans.
The decision not to, makes it look very much like there is an issue between the two of them. Richie made the decision to leave, Jon amplified the effect by continuing to tour without giving their extremely loyal fans a decent reason.
Even watching IBTFY at Cleveland... just a few months ago... there is a chemistry there, it's about these guys as a unit. If I wanted to see Jon solo, I'd have waited until after this album/tour because trust me, that's all we'll get for a few years after this.
