They used to play 5 tot 7 shows in the UK , now it is down to 3 :) If anything, they will hold contests and give away tickets. The website of wembley stadium already informs that all GA tickets are sold out !!! |
Saturation certainly isn't the only problem. Only U2, The Stones, Bruce and Metallica are bands/artists that are around that long and sell out stadiums anywhere in the world. And continue to do so.
Other acts that do so are either big reunion tours - like when The Police reunited or are just more contemporary acts. Coldplay, Beyonce, ... And then there are some local acts : Oasis could easily sell out any stadium in the UK but would never do so outside of the UK, RAMMSTEIN do so in Germany, Belgium and Holland but will never be big anywhere else. All other major acts play arenas with capacity of 10.000 to 20.000 - Bryan Adams, The Eagles. You name it. Despite Bon Jovi being one of the biggest bands in history, they fail to stay in that elite group of 'stadium' bands who will continue to play stadiums till they die. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Ever since 1995, Bon Jovi have never performed anything smaller than a stadium in Europe. ( Paris or the O2 residency as the exception). For years I have been expecting Bon Jovi to announce an indoor european tour bringing them to Arenas. Those would all sell very well. Their fans gotten older, some just do not like outdoor venues for concerts anymore. Let's not forget that in terms of money, Bon Jovi's last 3 tours ( LH, Circle and WAN) were top grossing tours. So - who's to say Bon Jovi had lost tour-power ? We might all have been so used to seeing our band at the largest venues in the world, but by selling out arenas anywhere in the world, they will still count as one of the biggest selling classic bands out there. Final point of my case - Jon's voice is a huge problem. They made clear that they were even able to replace Richie Sambora but you can't replace Jon Bon Jovi and sad to say - Jon's voice, his main instrument, has become a huge liability. Us - diehards - will still go and see them. I'll see them 3 or 4 times this tour, but ... the average Joe who wants to go and rock out on prayer, bad name or hear Jon pull out Always and Bed of Roses will go home disappointed because it just won't sound the way it should anymore. So my prediction is that THIS is THE final time we'll see Bon Jovi perform in stadiums. Also their ageing crowds are - in my opinion - not so keen anymore on going out in fields and stadiums to watch concerts. I think they start to demand indoor places with - for godsake - seats :) Quote:

But sometimes they've just been too optimistic about venues or ticket sales in advance. Just like with the Berlin fiasco last time around. |

Further on, top grossing tours don't mean much. Bon Jovi's tours are top grossing because they do a lot of shows in one year compared to various other acts. These top grossing tours mean nothing, really. Most of their peers aren't interested in spending that much consecutive time on the road anymore and instead spread out the legs of their tours over several years. When Bon Jovi had the top grossing tour with the Lost Highway tour the band played 99 shows in a span of 10 months with 77 shows in 2008. The 2008 tour grossed $210.650.974,- according to Billboard. U2 then started the 360 tour and played 110 shows in a span of 2 years. The total gross of the 360 tour was $736.421.584, though. That's 3 times as much with not even twice as many shows. Then there's the differences between markets. Bon Jovi had the top grossing tour in 2013 yet Springsteen played more shows in Europe with more visitors per show and grossed a whole lot more money there as well. Springsteen did 6 legs in 2 years though while Bon Jovi played 6 legs in one year. However, Springsteen played 2 rather big European legs in 2 years. That's like Bon Jovi playing 25 sold out stadium shows in Europe and then doing the same a year later. It's impossible, yet Springsteen does it. It's needless to say when you're doing all your shows in 1 year you're going to be the one with the top grossing tour. As you can see, these top grossing tours mean nothing really, besides telling everyone how much money the band has made. Bon Jovi surely has made it their marketing tool though as with every press release it had to be mentioned. There's plenty of acts who can do as many shows Bon Jovi does, but not many are willing to as they don't really have to. And in the end, the way Bon Jovi toured broke both the band and Jon's voice. As for artists playing arena's; most artist nowadays refuse to play stadiums and are rather booked in arena's as there's no sound issues and the general atmosphere is a lot better. Elton John plays arena's here in Holland yet has sold 35.000 tickets by doing 2 shows. There's no way Bon Jovi could do even just one show at the same venue nowadays, and yet they're playing at an open field with a capacity of 65.000 yet their tickets are 50% off as not even 15.000 tickets had been sold.
