Why all the ads?!?

What the f*ck is up with the insane amount of ads on JT as of late?! Great way to make people never wanna come here at all....

liljovi93 05-27-2015 06:55 PM

It is frustrating but as stated already by Kathleen, download Adblock Plus for free and it will stop that. Works on Chrome and took me about 5 seconds to download.

Spot on since.

Plus, this should be in NBJ part of the forum. Not in General Bon Jovi news.

Iceman 05-28-2015 02:53 PM

It looks like Peter's forcing people to get the paid subscription for this site. He's added new scripts that redirect ad-blocker users away from Jovitalk. I'm guessing the increased amount of ads is related to this as well.

He doesn't seem to want to run the site, but he won't let anyone else run it either. We said we were happy to move the site to another country with cheaper servers (and pay the costs), but Peter wanted money, A LOT of money to "give up" the site. So, I guess this is his way of forcing people to choose to either pay to use this site or go somewhere else. A dick move, if you ask me, but it's his site.

DevilsSon 05-29-2015 03:34 PM

I decided I'd just pay. In the end, this site has given A LOT to me. 10 Euros for a year is less than 2 beers. Well worth it.

(still a dick move!!)

DevilsSon 06-03-2015 02:27 PM

I was just thinking - the ads might be ok for existing users, we'll find a way. But certainly it precludes any new users from joining the board. Who the hell would join a board where you feel like every click my turn into a malware download.

That IS SHIT!!!

Now I want a refund haha

Did not go away for me - just turned off AdBlock and it's bad. Peter probably stopped the pop-ups for the mods.

Clearly he doesn't want to run the board anymore and he has made it damn near impossible for anyone new to join. Sad :(

Absolutely!

Becky 06-08-2015 12:44 AM

Just thinking out loud here--maybe it would be possible to reward long time users who have been registered for X amount of years and/or have X number of posts (showing active participation) with ad free accounts?

bonjovi90 06-08-2015 02:01 AM

I know it's a long shot, but ain't there a chance of starting a forum somewhere else and having it run by a person who's actually still active and interested in keeping it going?

Today I turned my ad-blocking system off just to check how the situation really is and not only were there ads, my antivirus immediately rand alarm and stopped some scripts from trying to run malware onto my PC. That's just insane!

Old Joysey 06-08-2015 01:08 PM

Ditto.

Anybody around here with too much time on their hands to launch a parallel board?

TheOriginalJez 06-08-2015 01:38 PM

I could host but I don't have the time to run it. Besides, I'm not sure how successful it would be...

Old Joysey 06-08-2015 02:12 PM

FYI, I ran several parallel Springsteen and Jukes boards 10-15 years ago when we had technical problems with the usual ones or when the admins didn't want to run the forum anymore, it's not very complicated, really, it's mostly a question of having a lot of time on your hands. ;)

There are 2 options:
1) you create a brand-new board where everybody have to register and start posting again from scratch
2) you create a brand-new board where you + nice & generous volunteers :) take the time to copy & paste the most important threads and messages so that the most interesting conversations don't disappear.

Some friends of mine did that a couple of years ago and it took us only a couple of months to select and import the most interesting threads into the new board. Of course it was a lot easier since we were not bothered with 4 pop-ups each time we clicked on a page...

Bounce7800 06-08-2015 02:25 PM

The problem with moving forums is you lose people if it's not the same address, and this board has a very big userlist (despite not so many being active).

The only way it could work was if it diverted away from here to the new address but that isn't going to happen. You could just have stickys pointing to the new site possibly but you are still just going to lose a hell of a lot of people and all the seo benefits etc that having a longtime site has built up.

Additionally, I can't see why people in 2015 aren't browsing without any sort of adaware or pop up blockers. It's a must, not just for this site.

Dave88 06-08-2015 02:29 PM

For those of you having trouble with the AdBlock Plus redirect, just install the NoScript addon and add drycounty.com on the untrusted list.

It's working fine for me on Firefox so far, no more redirects.

I understand but right now this board is most likely losing a lot of older users who are fed up with being bombarded with ads + potential new users won't register for the same reason.

Pop-up blockers are included in browsers nowadays so that you normally don't need to add a more efficient one. Some time ago we, Jovitalkers, had to add AdBlockPlus to be able to navigate on the board and it worked for a very short while then the admin added a new script to redirect ABP users and make it impossible to connect to the board... unless you upload another add-on... until the admin find another way? This is getting crazy and not worth it.

On a side and personal note, ABP isn't good for me as it prevents me from watching some TV channels whose webmasters are smarter than the JoviTalker who keeps repeating in another thread that all I need to do is "tell" ABP which sites are not to be blocked by it but I'll say it again: it does NOT work with some. Some TV and radio pages demand a password or a FB account to allow you to access their streaming programs, it's the technical trick they came up with to oblige viewers to accept ads whatever pop-up software they use.

Most sites are not nearly as bad as this for ads though. And the SEO benefits would seem to be cancelled out by the fact that any potential new users (and many existing ones already) are put off the site as soon as they attempt to access it.

Old Joysey 06-08-2015 10:28 PM

OK, looks like I had too much internet time on my hands today!

I've been experimenting with a new board today, just discovering how it works.
It's not meant to be a new forum per se, I'll just be using it as my own archive and playground but you're welcome to lurk and even post! :)

NO ADS, NO DRAMA! ;)

Moving would be worth it in my opinion. Just make sure it's well known on this site that we have moved. Any commoners around here wouldn't have any issue with moving, I don't think.

Same thoughts here. Sure we have thousands of users here, but about 90% of the registered members are inactive by now anyway.
Of those who keep posting and discussing on here each one knows another person and word will spread fast.
Peter's obvious intention by now is to kill this community.

I don't think that's fair. If he wanted or intended to kill it, he could have just taken it down years ago. People have said over and over again that they were willing to pay a small fee for an ad-free subscription.

TwinFan 06-09-2015 07:27 AM

Thing is, though, if we had a new board with an active admin, we could have certain upgrades and improvements that will never happen with our absent Peter. There's multiple reasons it'd be worth it. Maybe it's astronomically high hopes, as I don't know what the cost would be, but it would be much better than it is now.

TwinFan 06-09-2015 08:37 AM

http://jovitalk.boards.net/

Check this one out. If there are people willing to be here, I'm willing to keep up with it.

Iceman 06-09-2015 11:42 AM

Ok,

now Peter's blocked the whole board from AdBlock users. I'm not willing to pay to use a messageboard and I can always fix my browser to bypass any protections, but I'm sure most people here can't.

So, this is effectively blackmail, you have to pay if you want to use the site. Which would've been fine, if it was a free choice, but it's not anymore.

Bad move. I'm all fot switching to another board, but it needs to be a unanimous decision, we don't need 10 different messageboards competing over who's where. And it should be run by someone who has experience in running messageboards. If tehre is one, let me know. This board isn't worth the effort.

I'll join your board if you're willing to run it and if other fans register too, we don't need multiple forums, one board to rule them all, one board to find them, one board to bring them all and in the internet bind them.

One major improvement would be to be able to insert videos directly into our messages instead of a link like on this here board. That's what I did yesterday and I find it a lot more convenient, but that's just me!

BTW, I HAVE to share my experience with you because it's too funny: Hugh is jinxed! I'm getting familiar with a new forum template, I've just tested moving sections and threads today and the 3 threads about Hugh... disappeared!!! I didn't move them, I was in the process of moving the whole section thread by thread, changing their order of appearance, but before I had finished, the Hugh McDonald section had disappeared! How did it happen? I didn't do anything with it! Hugh really and definitely IS "the invisible BJ member"!

NB: as I explained yesterday, I created a forum to archive data mostly for my personal use, there's no competition, I don't intend to run it as a real messageboard.

There is native video embedding on my board. :)

A note to anybody coming from JoviTalk:

If this is the real deal, I am willing to run it. I've got experience with this type of stuff and I'm just willing to do it for the sake of the community. If we are willing to do it as well, I can get the domain name everythingjovi.com for cheap, which would make it easier to find. I'm also willing to take suggestions on what the name should be (I just pulled Everything Jovi out of my ass). Please let me know and I'm willing to put in the work. Everything I've encountered here is free, so we don't need to raise any money, either. :)

Alphavictim 06-09-2015 08:16 PM

So is it settled on TwinFan's board, then?

How about jovitalk.com? It's not like Peter owns it?

I'm willing to help as well, if needed. I've done these sort of things for living for about 20 years now. :)

TwinFan 06-09-2015 10:28 PM

jovitalk.com is already taken, I checked that first of course. jovitalk.net and jovitalk.org are available, though. Again, I'm open to suggestions. I think I've got a good grasp of what I've got so far, but I'll certainly let you know if there's anything that comes up!

KeepTheFaith2211 06-22-2015 10:21 PM

I'm happy to join that new board if it's still something everybody is hoping will work?

rocknation 06-23-2015 02:28 AM

Still getting the odd popup, and popunders with audio. Clean those out, and we'll have it.

Heh, Peter actually does own it, but for some reason he hasn't put it to use.

Well, anyway, this board is done. Once over half of your active posters start posting elsewhere, it's over.

FinnishFan 09-20-2016 06:37 PM

I came here today just to open a few topics and read the latest messages, but I still got about ten pop-ups that immediately started producing sound. Don't feel like returning since the page seems almost unusable.

Some ads I have seen during the past few weeks are not just normal ads. One of them was a scam purporting to be the webpage of a Finnish newspaper. I guess something needs to be done!

dianebonjovi 09-22-2016 02:48 PM

I've noticed too that recently the ads on this site have gotten out of hand again. In particular, I keep getting one from "Facebook" about my "account" and I'm not on Facebook! That one fills the whole page and locks the keyboard, so I have to use task manager to get out of my browser.

Just got another similar one today telling me I'd won something. So maddening. This is the only board I visit with these kinds of ads. Every time one pops up I fear my computer is being infected with a virus or spyware.

I may not be a regular poster, but I've been coming to this site since 1995 (before it was Jovitalk) so it's hard to just stop coming here. Hopefully someone is looking into this for us.

Similar situation for me. I get dozens of Facebook ads, and the thing is, that I am on FB so they should know that I don't need an account.

I once visited this site via my smartphone and instantly "agreed to" a paid subscription, which I could cancel instantly, but it cost me a few € nevertheless, which is why I don't ever visit this site via smartphone anymore, bar Tapatalk.

Already considered an ad-free subscription as 10€ per year is not much for a site that can give you so much, but considering my past experience and what people have written here over the four pages, I must say that I feel this blackmail thing going on and decided to deactivate all scripts for this side instead. A pity that the jovitalk.boards thing didn't take off last year.

Btw, I don't think we would lose that many members if we really decided to move. Sure, we have thousands of members, but by accident I saw today's birthday list and - well, take a look yourselves... ;)

No new ads have been added nor ad network settings changed since the beginning of this year. Some fishy ad networks have even been removed due to their problematic nature.

However, the pop under/up network being used did reportedly manage to develop an effective anti adblock code, which I can only applaud considering 30+% of ad-blocking users here.

It is also possible the ad networks started serving more ads here (ads are geo-targeted), due to end of summer or more site traffic due to new BJ album.

There should be no auto-playing audio or video popups, gambllng, adult and software promotion themed popunder / popup ads here, as those are all disabled in ad network settings. If you come accross such and ad, it should be reported here with as many details listed as possible: https://www.popads.net/report-abuse.html

Rdkopper 09-23-2016 05:11 PM

Yes... ever done the traffic increased in here , so did the adds

I recieve the "Luckland Casino" popup that starts playing sound and video almost every time. I tried to report in via the link you gave, but it says:

"We have no record of the entered popunder."

I tried putting both url of the forum and of the popup to the "Website" field but it doesn't work.
