Do you think they've hung out?

Since the tour ended, do you think any of the band members have hung out? Does Jon ever pick up the phone and call Tico just to see how he's doing?

What do you think their relationship is like when they aren't working? Do Jon, Dave and Tico all hang out together and complain about Richie? Or do Tico and Dave hang out and complain about their boss?

What do you guys imagine the brotherhood is like when they aren't touring or recording?

Walleris 09-29-2014 09:20 AM

I think they're forced to spend so much time together away from their loved ones (especially this past decade, considering they all have kids now), so my guess would be no.

A brief call/email to check what's up? Sure, Jon probably does that as a good boss, but I'd be shocked if they hang out just for the sake of it.

Javier 09-29-2014 04:40 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if when more than one of them is in the same town at the same time they exchange a "whutup!" and maybe hang out for a bit, but I don't see them going out of their way to get together and hang out, go to a bar or anything like that! Jon and Richie used to do that all the way up to 2007, but I doubt that's going on now....

ticos_stick 09-29-2014 06:21 PM

Outside of the album / touring process I very much doubt they as much as email each other. Familiarity breeds contempt.

The fact people actually fell for the idea that Jon & Richie were best friends is laughable. They could barely hide their contempt for each other on stage most of the time.

You really think so?

Nearly all of their stage interactions were choreographed and happened at the same time every night. Apart from that I didn't see a lot to convince me that they were friends. The whole blood brother / best friends nonsense was not something that I cared for anyway, this is rock & Roll. Tension is not necessarily a bad thing.

nikos greece 09-29-2014 06:55 PM

these guys have been together for 30 years now, grew up together. they know each other better than anyone else after all this time..after all these years its logical you ll be tired of the other guys and want to expand your circle, your kids grow up and your family grows as well.
these guys and especially jon and richie have dealt with super success, fame, ego, money, women, managers and stayed together, there were obviously fights but stayed together and after 30 years the only cacophony is these random comments from both sides which i m sure they regretted it.
people grow in different paces, and richie just couldnt keep up with that pace anymore, he handled it poorly but i m sure they will come close again in the future.
i may be naive to some but i believe about the bond between them, i m sure they have their lows but they could quit in the 80s if they couldnt stand each other, they could quit after crossroad, they stayed together and believing its only about the money its a cynical way to approach life.
ps,tension in a band is the base of creativity, with numerous examples, tension doesnt mean the friendship is fake...have you ever seen them play friends with hugh? or anyone else?

While I don't think it's as bad as that there's a video of the two of them in Conan in 2003. Richie cracks a joke and makes the angriest face I've ever seen and mutters under his breath. It's weird when they let their guard down.

I'm at work so can't get to Youtube until I'm home. It's easily findable, sorry.

Kathleen 09-29-2014 08:04 PM

See this video (from 2004 I think). It's an interview between Jon and Michael Kay of the Yankees.

At about 2:51 he is asked by Michael who the person would be that he would most like to have in a foxhole. He answers Richie without any hesitation and says that he is as loyal as they come.

I think up until 2006 or 2007 they had a good relationship. When Richie broke his shoulder during the HAND tour I remember another interview about Richie only being out a short time (which he was). Jon answered that Richie is not going to lie to me, if he says that he will be ready - he will be ready.

It would take me some digging to find that but I remember it well. I think sometime after those years with Richie trying to dry out a few times that the relationship deteriorated.

Rdkopper 09-29-2014 08:18 PM

I think at the very most, a text is exchanged.

Outside the music, they don't interact much at all. They don't go to dinner or have backyard BBQs. I doubt that any of the band members have even been to Jon's house in the Hamptons.

The friendship they have for eachother is on a different level. They've shared success together which includes all the highs and lows.

I do believe that they care for each other but they are business friends for the most part.

And Jon and Richie are NOT best friends! I don't think that they could stand each other. I think it's all a front for the camera.

semigoodlookin 09-29-2014 10:31 PM

My former boss worked extensively with both Jon and Richie for a PR firm and always said to me they were tight, were known to hang out and even holidayed together. This was way back in 2003 when he ended his career in that particular part of showbiz, so perhaps things changed since then. He had plenty of stories on Jon and Richie as well as other people in the public eye, but nothing too juicy. He said he never liked Jon cause his eyes looked dead. I never really pressed him on it because I do not care about this kind of stuff, but I thought it was fairly common knowledge that those two did do stuff together away from the band. I guess not, and I think we can assume that they don't anymore.

golittleperson 09-29-2014 10:37 PM

There is a definite change in dynamics over the years but I think that is normal. They grew up together in a way, they now have families and lives apart but I'd like to think (current tensions aside) that when it comes down to it they would be there for one another. For those of you old enough, think about people who have been in your life for 30 years....

I know I may be living in a delusional brotherhood bubble but I always felt like they did like one another. Life, issues have gotten in the way so I feel like the hang out/ off the job days are finished however.

I remember an interview from Japan when Jon said Richie's days consisted only of being bedridden in his hotel room and doing the gigs -- "Bless him." Jon also said that he was refusing painkillers at the time. But ironically, it was probably then that Richie was first introduced to them. And remember how he had to have his guitars strapped over his other shoulder?

At 1:20. I don't have sound right now but I remember noticing it's like Richie cut him off and Jon muttered something I can't make out.

I thought there was a more obvious instance at ~ 8:00 mark, where Richie butts in with a joke about choosing the touring location at random with a 'dartboard' - whereas Jon trying to answer the question properly, and ends up just shaking his head.

SadieLady 09-30-2014 07:58 AM

I didn't notice anything at 1:20 and no big deal at 8:00. I did notice that at about 5:33, Jon seemed pretty frowny for about a minute. It was after Richie's tale of he and Heather getting it on in Conan's car and leaving him a "present." Jon responded with a quib but then afterwards seemed to shut down for a bit.

Who knows. I think Jon likes to answer questions by himself and not have anyone else butt in. Except for the fact that they are a band, I never understood why they all show up at a press conference when Jon takes control of answering all the questions. Granted, he is the frontman but poor Tico and Dave have nothing to do at all during interviews; and Richie can be such a loose canon, I can see why Jon sometimes isn't in the mood to deal with it.

Rdkopper 09-30-2014 04:15 PM

It really depends on what Jon we are talking about.

Is it the laid back Jon from the 80's and 90's or the serious political one form '00s forward?

There was a point in time where Jon actually though Richie was funny and just let him do his thing... And even joined into it at times.

The most obnoxious Richie ever was during an interview in Australia where he kept saying "Australia" with that stupid voice he always does. I wanted to jump through the screen and knock him out but Jon keeps on laughing at him.

Then when Jon hosted SNL and Richie messes up his line, Jon yells at him and says "You F u c k ed ME" as they walk to the stage.... Jon is blowing kisses at the audience. Jon needs to chill the F out. I thought Richie forgetting his line made the skit.

I think since 2007, mainly because of Richie's drug problems, their relationship has gone to shit.

I doubt this is true but I remember reading this thinking huh...

Jon Bon Jovi had his ego hit hard when daughter Stephanie overdosed on heroin on November 14, 2012 in her college dorm. Since then Jon has been distraught and even angrier to business associates and friends. Jon said point-blank to Richie's face, 'I thought an overdose would have come from a daughter of yours, not mine.'"

See, I don't blame Jon for that. That was just stupid. Conan didn't even know what to say.

This isn't a Howard Stern interview Richie.

lol! That interview is ridiculous! I can see why Jon would laugh though, Richie is making a fool out of himself. I was laughing, but it was very annoying.

Is there video of this SNL thing? I'd like to see that. It was so long ago I don't remember it at all

Listen closely. When you watch it on TV it's as clear as ever.

Yeah, I gave it another listen and I could hear it this time around. I wonder if Richie was dreading Jon's wrath after he messed up his line

semigoodlookin 09-30-2014 06:35 PM

In what way does he mean "you ****ed me"?

You ****ed the monologue
You made me look stupid
You embarrassed me
You ****ed up my life

Whichi is it?

I don't know how we could know which he was referring to but yeah, I'd guess the first 3.

Jon was hosting the event which is a big deal and it didn't go perfect. Even though Richie messed up and Jon recovered, it's still an overall reflection on Jon, especially if he recommended adding Richie to that skit. It just makes them look like amateurs. It's a collective reflection.

It's like if Jon and Richie did an acoustic performance and Jon sang it perfectly and Richie messed up the guitar parts. Again, it's a collective reflection.

We could sit back and call Richie an idiot but that's not what the papers will say. It will say Bon Jovi are not experienced enough to handle an SNL skit.

Overall, I do think Jon did an amazing job.

ticos_stick 09-30-2014 08:37 PM

Give how much richie ****ed up he took it in pretty good grace methinks. Mountain, molehill, various such metaphors.

I remember watching it "live" and that moment seemed excruciating. I can't believe how f***d up Richie was. I was embarrassed for him.
