Itīs my life
Itīs crazy to think that it has been 18 years since this song was released, and it is pretty well known that it carried the band throught their comeback in 2000.
What do you guys think of it today ? How was your reaction the first time you listened to it ? I personally think that itīs a fantastic tune. I remember when I heard it on the radio in 2000 and instantly fell in love with it. The video was also super cool (it was on MTV all day long). Iīve seen a lot of members here say itīs overplayed live, but to me it stands up there with Prayer and Wanted when it comes to songs that have to be played every night. IMO, there are two issues related to it: 1. Jon and the band were never able to do it justice live. I love the way Jon sings the chorus after the key change on the studio version, yet he was never able to do it live. Also, during the talkbox solo, there is a great base guitar that was never played live, hence this part feeling very empty on a live setting. 2. The clones: I really like the lyrics, but after they started producing clone after clone of the song and Jon decided that the LIVE MY LIFE line would be his motto for the next ten years, it really got stale. I also love the acoustic version with the The All American Rejects from 2007. |

Once upon a time... not so long ago: |
Why do you think they were never able to do it justice live? The version posted above is good and also this one :
Jon sings the " This ain't a song for the broken hearted" part with rasp just like on the studio version! |
Probably because of the sound. It just never sounded as "raw" live. Same issue I have with In These Arms. On the studio version, there is this "deep", full guitar sound in the beginning, and live it just never even came close, when Richie played some higher, bluesy notes. There was just something missing...

itīs played the same way since 2000... time for a chance

...it's now or never
Hate the song |
It was amazing at the time because they had such a hide resurgence of popularity thanks to that song. Its not among my favorites OR my least favorites. I just appreciate what it did for the band.
The song I think has never sounded as good as the studio version is Bad Name. The music is just different, more whiny or something. It never lived up to the studio sound. |
Fantastic song. Not bothered about Max Martins involvement or that theyve unsuccessfully tried to clone it ever since. Its a great song. Love the video too.

Love this song and the video is amazing! Time that Bon Jovi used to do great videos...

Of course the band never had a second guitarist until the HAND era, and that guitarist was Bobby who was largely inaudible in the parts that a rhythm guitarist is needed. If they would've had somebody to fill out that sound back on the Crush/OWN tours, that song likely would've jammmmmed |
