Jon's voice on the Crush/OWN tour
 

Many of you say Jon's voice started declining in 1996 (so do I, actually), but in my ears he was still very good in 2000-01. His high notes (especially the longer belts, like the last chorus of BOR) were not as consistent as previously anymore, but as a whole he still had a great range and mostly did perfect justice to the songs they played live at the time.

Personally, I find his 2001 voice largely better than his '00 one. Especially during the spring in Japan (STBI from Nagoya and Hey God from Osaka were absolutely brilliant, for example) as well as at some of the US shows he was on absolute fire, constantly pulling out very strong vocals. The trend continued in Europe, where something like Always from Cardiff wasn't far off Jon's 1995 standards. And of course the stunning performances of KTF and IBTFY on Giants night #2 were the icing on the cake, pretty much ending Jon's "vintage" vocal era...

I agree that his vocals were still extremely strong in 2000 and 2001, and the latter moreso. Jon still delivered some vocals during the early part of the Bounce tour in 2003 that were on a par with his 2001 performances but 2001 probably is a good point to mark the end of his vintage era. In a lot of ways, I prefered his vocal delievery from 2008 to 2011 than during the late 80s and early 90s. It wasn't as raw but it was far more controlled and mature. I really like listening to Jon's vocals during that time period.

I like his 2008-11 voice as well, but to me it definitely wasn't better in any way than, say, his 1993 voice. Maybe more "technically competent", but even on the best days far less sonically impressive or expressive (after all, the inconsistency of his high range wasn't prominent in the 1990s, and neither was the nasality which could get really annoying on some occasions). As much as I think that was their second best era as a live band after the KTF and TD tours (many of the set lists literally were something insane and the energy was stunning in general), in terms of Jon's vocal quality there still was no comparison to his pre-2000 standards.

Of course, this is just my opinion and you're fully entitled to yours by all means :)

No question that the man could sing amazingly well right up to 2012. Twenty six years of top quality performances is a good run.
