Stranger In This Town

11 yeras after after its release, I consider this album as one the finest record i've ever heard. Even if Bon Jovi, the band, still rules in my heart, I really think there's more soul in this album than in all the BJ discography. It was an attempt to take the skeletons out of the closet... so it was very emotionnal. Richie did an amazing job, his vocals are tremendous and gives me thrills to the bone. His guitar playing is simply sometimes as close as you can get to perfection.
So I say Thank you Richie.
to all those who can, just listen to his "the wind cries mary" cover. Jimi Hendrix would be proud!

That album is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Once you get over the initial shock of Rest In Peace the album just flows. Great thing is you can listen to it regardless of what mood you're in.

Edwin 07-30-2002 07:07 PM

I can only agree.

Suus 07-31-2002 12:20 AM

I think this is one of the most underestimated albums ever made

xx Suus

I agree with what you have all said, especially Mr. Sambo. My ears and eyes must have been bugged out when I first heard "Rest In Peace", because I wasn't quite ready for what I was to hear. All of the songs are great. Truly one of the best in my vast collection. They only thing that disappoints me is when Richie says he "was thrown down from a place artistically" after it did not hit very big here in the USA.

this album is on my cd player at least once a day, just loved the listening instructions to!!!!!!

easily the best of the solo projects!!!!!

Rob 05-11-2004 10:30 PM

I need to get hold of The Wind Cries Mary from somewhere. Can't find it anywhere.

Dave 1986 05-12-2004 12:07 AM

I miss that album! I lent that and Undiscovered Soul to a mate of mine and then he "lost" them

I havent listened to that album for nearly a year now and I dunno if I should just give up hope and buy the albums again. :?:

It's good advice.

I rate Stranger higher than US but they are both excellent.

walter 05-15-2004 09:19 AM

"Stranger" is my favorite from 90s, I did a review on this site a long time ago. it's 1000 times better than "Undiscovered Soul". "SITT" was more a therapy than something else, Richie was bored in BJ and needed his own space to create the stuff he needed to hear. he only recorded "Rosie" from NJ sessions because he liked so much the song he wanted it to feature on Jersey but it didn't pass the reharsals sessions. it's a strong melodic friend you can listen to when you're in the blue.
"US" was more a fun break with some friends in the studio, Richie get married with kids, BJ was great time... it's only a fun album. you can recognize the style, but the mood is really different. "Stranger" is a serious" album, "Undiscovered Soul" is not really. maybe did it went great live, but honestly, I haven't listen to it for years. I don't like it

Stranger is a great album I really love it. Me too I was suprised of Rest in peace, sill don't get what`s the sense of that.

It's a great album! I´m glad Rosie wasn`t on NJ cause I don't really like Jons version, but Richie sings it really good!

Not to be picky..but what Richie actually said was that he was

'throwing down from a truly soulful and artistic place."

I always took that to mean that he was recording what was in his heart and soul, and didn't take into consideration whether the music was commercially viable or not.

In the music business, Richie is all music, no business! ;)

Yeah, sure. That's why he's stuck with Bon Jovi. He could have left the band long time ago you know. But no, Richie likes money and fame too much.

To slightly misquote a song title , that TRULY is a Bitter Whine!

Great album for sure! Im not too crazy about River of love though. That's the only track I don't really like on it.

Also, I think it's kinda cool how Dave and Tico also play on the album. Makes it feel a bit like a BJ album as well as a solo album, with the focus obviously a lot more on Richie of course. I guess thats why Dave and Tico
don't appear in the music videos so people wouldn't get confused that way.

Amazing album though. I get the feeling Richie was planning on making this album for years and was waiting for the opportunity. That's probably why it turned out so strong.

Stranger is one of the many reasons I am a BJ fan!

thesedays2003 05-20-2004 08:21 PM

The best album ever!(apart form TD of course!) :D

badger741 05-22-2004 12:54 PM

Both of Richie's solo albums are great its just shame so many people don't know they exsist. Boy what they are missing!

TT-Nick 05-22-2004 01:04 PM

Both Richies albums are masterpieces; they are packed with emotion and stunning lyrics, and the bands on both of them are just as brilliant.

In my opinion, just one of Sambora's solo albums is better than both of Jon's put together. One of the reasons why I say this is beacause Richie's work doesn't use on Electronic Drums and those horrible loops.

If only Jovi could record a "Stranger In This Town".

Myguitar 05-22-2004 05:38 PM

I'd rather take a pencil and shove it in my ear than listen to this piece of junk....

Just kidding

I love the album too, it was very soulful and artistic, I think that Undiscovered Soul was great too. And then Destination Anywhere just showed that Jon can be a good writer if he wants to write for love of the music and not the Top 40 radio.

Rob, if you need Wind Cries Mary please message me (Put the song name in subject line) and I will get it to you via e-mail.

Yeah, because Richie NEVER sticks with his roots, or stays true to what got him to where he is today. You're right, it's all money and fame.... (yes that's sarcasm people)

DannyBJ 06-01-2004 10:32 PM

STRANGER IN THIS TOWN is a great album, i thik

Rob 06-02-2004 03:06 AM

Yeah that album is great, and that Wind Cries Mary cover would make Jimi proud. Richie is a class act, and definately doesn't get the credit he deserves from the general public. It's only the hardcore fans that appreciate him for who he is. Most people are just "Jon, Jon Jon", and I'm sure many people think that Bon Jovi is just Jon.

A Richie Sambora has to pay bills, too.

Yup, that's one of my Jovi pet peeves. I don't know how many times I've heard someone go "oh Bon Jovi, I love HIM." Not only did my roommate do this YESTERDAY, but the freakin DJs were doing it on the radio last week. It's craziness I tell ya! :x
