Well , ZZ Top was a one off thing, they then opened for Kiss in Europe on their first proper tour in 1984.

That was the other way around: when they opened for KISS, Jon was smitten by their song "Heaven's on fire". Sometime after the tour, he met Paul Stanley in New York and told him how much he liked that tune. That's when Stanley told him about Desmond Child.
