Def Leppard now claiming 100 million albums sold

Quite a jump from the 65 million reported in recent years:

Oh dear. When is the last time Def Leppard had a hit album?

The 90's was the last time they were even close to being relevant.

I love the Lep, but you're right - I don't think any of their studio albums have gone platinum since Retroactive. It's just funny now, that after Motley came up with the bullshit 80 million albums sold, Leppard's claim from 65 million to 100 million happened overnight. Unless they sold 35 million albums over the past year, they're full of shit.

Captain_jovi 04-17-2012 01:19 AM

Everything since Adrenalize has tanked, relatively, sales wise. They're full of it.

ticos_stick 04-17-2012 02:55 AM

I suppose there's no law against it, but it's pretty desperate.

Becky 04-17-2012 04:21 AM

The must be counting single sales from the good old days.... and even that would be pushing it to get them to 100 million.

Javier 04-17-2012 05:52 AM

That's quite a jump! But either way, I think all these bands are full of shit anyways, Bon Jovi seems to have sold 20 million more albums every time a new press release about an album and tour comes out....

That's not true. They hit 100m with Bounce. Then the box set came out to celebrate that. They didn't start talking 120m until after HAND and Lost Highway. After The Circle and GH, they went to 130m. I think Bon Jovi are spot on, and I don't think they count singles sales. If they did, they'd probably be around 250m.

That sounds about right. The box set might not have sold all that well, but wasn't it counted as 4 separate entries? Do I have that right?

If you think so, I still say they're full of shit, but that's the norm within the industry it seems. From Motley, to Lepp, to even heavyweights like Metallica and Bon Jovi. Even the numbers from the rolling Stones don't even sound right to me, but that's just me you don't have to agree....

Bon Jovi had some monster selling albums. From Slippery to These Days they were selling huge amounts and then even the 00's albums sold a decent amount.

They waited until they sold 100 million and then celebrated it. These has been bands are just taking the piss now in a desperate attempt to sell tickets / albums.

Dave 1986 04-17-2012 07:02 PM

Bet you all any money it'll be Poison claiming this next.

Panda 04-17-2012 08:40 PM

I don't even think poison has sold 25 million, let alone 100m. They're probably my least favorite 80s bands. And that goes far considering I hate 80s cheese rock.

Exactly.

Slippery - 28m
New Jersey - 18m
Keep The Faith - 12m
Cross Road - 20m
These Days - 11m
Crush -11m

Those 6 alone have sold 100m to date.

Leppard on the other hand, had 2 massive albums and the rest just don't add up:

On Through The Night - 1m
High n' Dry - No certification in any country.
Pyromania - 15m
Hysteria - 20m
Adrenalize - 6m (being generous)
Retro Active - 2m (being generous)
Vault - 6m
Slang - 2m (being EXTREMELY generous)
Euphoria - 1m
X - No certification in any country.
Yeah - See above.
Rock of Ages - 2m
Songs from the Sparkle Lounge - No certification in any country.

So, from what we know for sure, they have sold 55m. Between the rest without certification, I can buy another 10m. But 45m?

Found this on a fan made FAQ in 2000. How correct it is, I don't know, the numbers could be WAY off but this is what they had, for the sake of perspective:

On Through The Night: 1 million
High 'N' Dry: 1 million
Pyromania: 10 million
Hysteria: 16 million
Adrenalize: 7 million
Retro Active: 1.7 million
Vault - Greatest Hits: 6 million
Slang: 3 million
Euphoria: 0.5 million in the USA (and counting)

Really? I can't tell you how sick I am of hearing '120 million albums sold'. It seems like that has been the amount forever.

Those numbers sound about right for the time, with the exception of Slang. I can't find anywhere that says it went platinum in any country.

They're saying 130million now.

steel_horse75 04-25-2012 05:20 PM

def leppard have no way sold near 100m albums. maybe 55m at a push

They havent had a hit album since 80s.

Re Jovi - they do include solo albums in their 130m albums not sure re singles though

In Lep's defense, Vault was a big seller.

Savvi 04-26-2012 04:51 PM

According to that 'Bon Jovi Encyclopedia' book by Neil Daniels...

Bon Jovi - 2 million (at the time)
7800 - 1 million (at the time)
Slippery - 26 million
New Jersey - 18 million
Cross Road - 20 million+
Crush - 9 million
Bounce - 6 million
Have a Nice Day - 7 million
Lost Highway - 4 million

Blaze of Glory - 6 million+
Destination - 3 million

There are sources online that say Keep the Faith sold 12 million and These Days 11 million. Then one would assume The Circle sold about 3-4 million, as well as the Greatest Hits. Also you would include about 1-2 million for Richie's solo stuff.

Then there are a few different sources that say Slippery sold 28 million, Crush 11 million, debut 3.5 million and Fahrenheit 2.5 million. At the same time though some would say HAND and Bounce didnt sell that many.

Adding all that up you get something between 128-143 million. So 130 is about right.

steel_horse75 05-02-2012 05:42 PM

I dont think RS solo albums have between sold 1-2 million copies - Id be amazed if they sold 500,000 for both.

Solo albums just dont sell well as a rule.

I may be wrong though.

the icebox 05-02-2012 09:12 PM

solo albums do not count with band or group total sales of albums because if it did, the jackson 5 would have sold 850 million albums with michael's sales.

to the topic. no matter how much i try to count up the figures for def it still comes up to around 65-70 million, no where close to 100 million

at least for jovi there is clear case that jovi is at 125-130, just from 1984-1995, not counting singles, jovi sold about 100 million, so for def to claim 100 million is quite far stretch

steel_horse75 05-03-2012 12:16 AM

No way def leppard have even sold 60m

They havent had a hit album for over 20 years and didn't sell over 60m in their pomp

danfan 05-06-2012 07:05 AM

Lep's claim is almost as absurd as Motley's claim of 80 million. Almost.
