BOX SET SONG HISTORIES
(Friday, March 18, 2005) Below is a breakdown of the when and where the songs from the 100,000,000 BON JOVI FANS CAN'T BE WRONG... box set originated. This is not scripture - it took some work culling this info from the archives (even on the box set DVD vs. the box set booklet you might find contradictions -- the truth is, 20 years of tapes unearthed with less than stellar labelling!): DISC ONE: 1) WHY AREN'T YOU DEAD? (Unreleased demo circa 1994.) Recorded in NJ. 2) THE RADIO SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT (Unreleased demo circa 1992.) Recorded in Vancouver and New Jersey. Vocals were, indeed, done while JBJ had a head cold. 3) TAKING IT BACK (Unreleased demo circa 1992.) Recorded in New Jersey. 4) SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT (Unreleased demo of song that continued to be worked on until the version most are familiar with appeared on the 1994 Cross Road album.) Written in the islands, this was recorded in New Jersey in 1994. 5) MISS FOURTH OF JULY (Unreleased demo circa 1992.) Recorded up in Vancouver and back in New Jersey. 6) OPEN ALL NIGHT (Unreleased demo circa 1994.) (Band has recorded a much different version of this song for planned inclusion in forthcoming studio album.) 12) I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR MAN (Unreleased demo from 1994.) Recorded in New Jersey. DISC TWO: 1) GARAGELAND (Unreleased demo from 1999.) Just reminded me what a TOP CLASS release the box set was. Even with Obie screwing up stuff all the time, this just kicked ass!!! ****IN' CLASS!!!
|
Yeah, some gems on that boxset..was pleased with the relase, despite them missing some obvious bsides.
And rolo_tomachi what's your source for that list by the way? Because you certainly didn't write all that, it's too well written .. ;p Andi |
I thought Why Aren't You Dead was from the KTF sessions?
|
I love Outlaws of love.

I thought I remember someone saying that list was posted on bonjovi.com right when the boxset came out.
ETA: The date is March 2005. I'm almost certain it was posted on the official website or Backstage or something, and someone was smart enough to copy and save it. I've seen that very same list on this forum a few times in the past 3 years. |
Yeah, that's the list Obie posted on bj.com back in the day. But I think it was originally posted before 2005.
|
It was early 2005, I remember the box set came out in November and it took them a while to post it.
Obie did a LOT of work pleasing the hard cores with this box set and I will always appreciate the effort he did with this. |
7) RICH MAN LIVING IN A POOR MAN'S HOUSE (Unreleased demo from 1998.) Recorded in New Jersey and Los Angeles with Dave Stewart.
Was Dave Stewart suppose to record JBJ's 3rd solo effort? ...I know how Crush came to be, but I didn't know DS did any work with JBJ after DA. |
Quote:
Yeah, it was a good effort, but I was very angry about many missed opportunities back then... I wanted all the NJ demos for instance that were floating around in poor quality and I hated how Obie stated that he didn't want to put them on the box because the hard-core fans already had them. I didn't. And I still don't in decent quality. |
Quote:
I think they were aware of making two box set, and have reserved the material for the 30th anniversary or maybe the 40th anniversary. They would not put all the good in the first compilation. |
The box set is just the perfect collection... 4 discs of music WAY better than last 4 albums xD We've should been listening to one new disc every 2 years and it would be something big :D
|
The mastering by George Marino is 10, perfect sound, are the best mixes of the entire catalog of Bon Jovi.
|
Regarding songs recorded between 96-99, what was their purpose?
After TD tour I thought they went separate ways as such to do solo albums/movies etc and re-convened for Real Life and later Crush. |

This was an 80's tune, not 92. On the Box Set Jon said this one had dust on it with We Rule The Night. He doesn't remember writing it and referred to it as the "earlier stuff" he doesn't necessarily like. |

Bruce was probably going to do Crush but maybe his passing also changed Sex Sells into Crush.... |

Start at 25:50 How could anyone think Outlaws of Love was from '92 anyway? It's so Bon Jovi 80's. |
Quote:
In an interview he stated that he gave Bruce 30 and Richie brought 1. He wasn't specific as to what stage the songs were in or what album they were for. He said Real Life was the last song Bruce did for them before his passing. Jon has his own recording studio and it capable of some sort of production so you don't really know what stage the songs were in when he handed them over. By the way, these are the conversations I love to have and was hoping my 90's post could morph into something like this. I can't take these simple topics anymore on ranking your favorite song or worst line. Like I stated, my 90’s topic was influenced from the Box Set topic while I was reading about the These Days songs. |

I'm usually the biggest defender of Rdkopper in here, but I'm 98% he is wrong on this one. Yeah the guitar riff definitely has that 80s sound but the chorus and the high bits definitely has than 92/94 demo era. It almost has the sound of Love Ain't Nothing But a Four Letter Word (rock version without the brass). Also im pretty sure i've watched interviews where Jon has got it totally wrong about when songs were written and released...im sure its either 92 or 94 |
Quote:
I agree with you about the amount of songs they gave Bruce. They talked about going through the huge pile of songs they amassed in that time period, I don't think they recorded anything with Bruce past Real Life. The demos have such a loose feel, it was probably just them and Obie. |
You think that, Bon Jovi will release new "box set" the next year?
We should ask. |

The problem with Jon is, he hates all the great songs we love. He didn't like Outlaws but "had" to put it on there |

I love Outlaws of Love, and I'm also pretty certain it's 80s, sounds nothing like the Keep The Faith era or even the New Jersey era, I'd put it at Slippery at the latest.
There's others on that official list I strongly disagree with as well ... Satellite, Last Chance Train and The One That Got Away mainly |
