In recent weeks the band have been dogged by rumours that Tyler has quit, with guitarist Perry seemingly confirming that the singer had left Aerosmith on Monday (November 9).

However, midway through a Joe Perry Project gig at New York's Filmore venue, Tyler appeared onstage and addressed the audience.

"I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith," he said, before turning to Perry and stating: "And Joe Perry, you are a man of many colours but I, mother****er, am the rainbow!"

Tyler then instructed Perry's drummer to play, and the band launched into Aerosmith's 1975 hit 'Walk This Way'. Tyler ended the song with his arm around Perry.

This just came out, in relation to that:

When Steven Tyler joined Joe Perry onstage last night in New York to sing “Walk This Way” – and announced he wasn’t quitting Aerosmith – it seemed like the troubled group’s problems might be over. But Rolling Stone has learned that things are far from settled within the band, as part of reporting for a story that will appear in our next issue.

The cameo, says Perry, came as a surprise even to him. “There was all this commotion during our encore break and somebody said, ‘Steven is here.’ ” Perry says. “And I was like, ‘What?’ ” After exchanging pleasantries, Tyler asked to sit in with the group on the final encore of “Walk This Way.” “Being an acquaintance of 40 years, I said, ‘Why not?’ ” Perry says. ” So he came up and sang and that was the last I saw of him.”

Despite Tyler’s onstage insistence that he isn’t quitting the band, Perry says Aerosmith is still considering touring and recording with a new singer. “He wants to take two years off from the band,” Perry says. “The rest of the band wants to keep on working. We have so many different options to fill up that time. Anything is possible at this point. Basically, any communication that we’ve had over the last couple of months has been through managers, so that’s been pretty strange.”

Perry adds, “I never won any money trying to second-guess what goes on in Steven’s mind. I guess this is just Aerosmith business as usual.”

Aloha !

Yep, exactly what I thought happened. Joe Perry didn't look very amused after the show when he was signing autographs for fans waiting outside and I can understand how the band finally puts Steven Tyler under pressure to finish something instead of thinking about himself all the time.

Salaam Aleikum,

Looks like Steven decided to try and do some damage control, and failed miserably.

These interviews are really good. They explain a lot, good read.

It's sad that Tyler couldn't get along with Brendan O'Brien. I wonder if we'll ever hear some of the stuff they recorded with him.

Those interviews were fantastic.

I think it would be great for the four of them to tour while Steven Tyler wants a break.

the day aerosmith record or tour without steven is the day i turn my back on the band.

i sympathise with joe who feels the fans are being let-down of late, which ... we are.

but replacing steven would be ****in ridiculous, he so's synonomous with the band it would become a joke.

that kind of explains a lot. let's hope steven sorts himself out and aerosmith as we know it can return.

It would be time that they released a decent record - Just push play was pretty weak imho - the last good one was 9 lives (from 1999!). After that: Nothing. 1 (!!!!!) studio album (if you do not count the blues cover album) in 11 years - pretty lazy if you ask me!

I always liked Perry more than Tyler (who has become "mr Botox" ). But too bad that he cannot write decent songs on his own. The last studio records were all done with help from outside writers.....
