Social Disease Thread
What do you think of the song? Do you think it should of been replaced with one of the outtakes? It's my favourite song ever and I'd love to hear the community's thoughts on it ! :D

One of the weaker songs for me.

Never have been a big fan of it. Would've loved for Borderline to have made that cut. But there's certainly songs from the band's catalogue I like less. Though not many from the 80s [emoji28]

I prefer Borderline over the album version as well though the faster live versions I'm a huge fan of. Shame that it was only documented 10 times :(

Deleted from my playlist for obvious reasons.

Iv always loved the song , don’t understand the hate for it ! Certainly better than edge of a broken heart in my book , if there is one song I would change , i would replace without love , for borderline
|
Not gonna lie, its the song on slippery I always forget about, but always enjoy the surprise when it comes on. No idea why I forget about it, cool song.
|
The intro seriously dates the song; they wouldn't be caught dead pulling stuff like that afterwards. The tune itself is... unremarkable. Not sure what I'd replace it with; obviously Edge of a Broken Heart is a great track, but you'd need to keep the flow of the album in mind, too.

Rubbish.

By far the worst song on the album

Great song, Great Riff!
It has a bit of the tongue in cheek/Aerosmith vibe which is sort of missing from the rest of the album. And for an album that was supposed to have a lady's bosoms on the cover, it badly needs it. And come to think of it, what other Bon Jovi song is NSFW? (that intro). |

Not a great song and I tend to forget about it too.
But come to think of it I kinda like it. It is a have-some-fun-and-don't-take-it-too-serious song. I really like Borderline but it would have changed the mood of the whole album somehow. Edge of a Broken Heart has a very weak chorus = not album material. |

It's on the New Jersey deluxe edition, so it is officially available.

I remember Aerosmith asking for it at least.

Great Tune and fits perfect. I think anyone who grew up during that time will understand this next statement.
At a time when people listened to albums all the way through, Social Disease was the song between Prayer and Wanted. It's a staple song on that album especially because of the intro. Back then you didn't listen track by track. You listened from start to finish. Everyone back then also knows that when you flipped over that tape and the guitar intro to Raise Your Hand takes off, it's the continuum of an epic journey. Replacing Social Disease is like fixing mistakes in the original Star Wars movie. It's the bridge between Prayer and Wanted... putting anything else in that spot just wouldn't work. I don't hate it, but it is my least favourite track on Slippery. Borderline on the other hand, 110% should've been on the album (as with Edge).
Those who are saying you don't understand why people dislike it... I feel the same way about Without Love. I think that's a great track. Side note - I edited the track and deleted the intro so no surprise sex noises if it comes on shuffle  |

I love the London Horns version from London 1990, both Wembley and Hammersmith Odeon.

I was just about to post that as well, yes its true Tyler wanted it for PV....I thinks its a great song, it fitted in with scene of that era , its one of my faves on the album. I actually rate it above bad name, less pop more rock with a certain sleaze feel to it |
Social Disease always was THE skip song on Slippery for me. It never did something for me.
So because of that thread I gave it another listen. I think Richie's guitar work is superb, as usual in that period. And the verses also go over pretty well. But the chorus is the problem. It lacks the power that Bon Jovi choruses usually have. It almost seems like a guide vocal in a demo with just Jon singing it. If they had done the chorus in a different, more powerful way with the band singing backing vocals as well, it would have been a better song in my book. |

But of their 4 big albums, this and Woman In Love are my skip songs. I don't mind Social Disease, but it does nothing for me. |
Social Disease Thread
I’d never pick it out to play on a playlist but when it comes up on the album I enjoy it.
Damn the pizza parlour jury who deemed this and without love better than, Game of the Heart, borderline and edge of a broken heart. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Great post. Agreed 100%. I was about to comment on this thread but this post perfectly sums up how I see this. It all comes down to continuity and the overall flow of the album. On Slippery, Social Disease merely works as a bridge between two of the greatest tracks of the 80’s. It’s a solid album track even if it lacks hit potential. It’s still fun and catchy. It sort of reminds me of Homebound Train. It was never meant to be a defining song for the band, yet it serves it’s purpose very well indeed. Back in the days, you’d listen to the whole album, not just the hits. Even today, every time I hear the final choruses of Prayer, I expect to hear the intro of Social Disease in just a few seconds. That said, I admit I’d love to hear Aerosmith’s rendition of it. I’m convinced it would have been an outstanding Aerosmith track. I used to love Borderline back then, yet I think it’s a bit dated... It hasn’t aged that well I guess. It never was in the same league as Bad Name or Prayer or Wanted. It would better fit on an earlier album. I guess it represents the kind of Bon Jovi there would have been without Desmond Child. I love Edge of A Broken Heart, too, but I can’t see a spot for it on the album, either. If I remember correctly, wasn’t it the first track ever written by JB/RS/DC? Even the guitar riff sort or reminds me of Bad Name. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
