Slippery (Slope) When Wet: Spotify's "Egregious" Content and Conduct Policy

Once upon a time, not so long ago, the wife of an American politician founded the Parents Music Resource Center, insisting that song lyrics be printed on the backs of albums so that parents could make sure that what their kids were listening to wasn't TOO dirty or trying to turn them into substance abusers. Shortly thereafter, Slippery When Wet's original album art had to be scuttled because it was too wet and wild.

More recently, corporate advertiser complaints to Youtube resulted in the establishment of a policy where certain content would no longer be "monetized" -- not censored, my goodness, no! -- just no longer profitable for its creators. That's why you now see YouTubes with titles like "S3x Tape Scandal" and "Baby Mama Recorded Threaten!ng Side Chick". And now it looks like a piece of the music industry is following suit.

Quote:

Time.Com: R. Kelly is the first artist whose music will be removed from Spotify-owned playlists and algorithmic recommendations as part of a new policy against “hateful content and conduct” ...An internal committee at Spotify...will decide on a case-by-case basis whether to stop promoting an artist

Spotify’s new Hate Content and Hateful Conduct public policy...aims to remove anything that “expressly and principally promotes, advocates, or incites hatred or violence against a group or individual based on characteristics, including, race, religion, gender identity, sex, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability.”

...Kelly's music will still be available on the platform, but Spotify will no longer actively promote it...While R. Kelly’s songs on Spotify might not violate the “hate content” rules alone, the company said egregious bad behavior by an artist can impact the decisions they make.

Music by the rapper and singer XXXTentacion, who currently faces a multiple domestic abuse charges, including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and domestic battery by strangulation, will also be removed from Spotify playlists. XXXTentacion denies the allegations.
Kelly hasn't been criminally accused of anything; XXXTentacion, who is on probation, responded with a list of legacy performers who should also be subject to the policy, including:
Jimmy Page (Rape of Minor)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Sexual Assault)
Sid Vicious (Domestic Violence/Murder)
Gene Simmons (Sexual Battery)
Ozzy Ozbourne (Domestic Abuse)
Nick Carter - Backstreet Boys (sexual assault)
James Brown (Domestic Violence)
Michael Jackson (sexual abuse of minor)
"Age" isn't listed as one of Spotify's "characteristics." Songs advocating hate for women will no longer promoted; are songs advocating hate for the police still okay? Was XXX trying to be evenhanded by looking at genres outside of hiphop, or was he trying to be clever by subtly muddying the waters with race baiting? And I guess Bon Jovi's Knockout will have to go: "Here comes the boom boom boom" -- ouch, violent! Let the slippery (when wet) slope begin -- all the way back to PMRC-land!

And we're off!

ConsequenceOfSound.com: ...Women’s advocacy group UltraViolet is urging...Spotify...to...flex its new hate content policy by removing the music (of) other artists accused of sexual abuse...(and) misconduct...

(E)xecutive director Shaunna Thomas specifically calls out the likes of Chris Brown, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nelly, Eminem, Don Henley of The Eagles, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Tekashi 6ix9ine, and Ted Nugent, citing them as artists “who continue to profit from your promotion.”

“Every time a famous individual continues to be glorified despite allegations of abuse, we wrongly perpetuate silence by showing survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence that there will be no consequences for abuse...That has a cultural effect far beyond one individual artist.”
I wonder if they consider You Give Love A Bad Name female hate speech. Maybe Always makes it a wash, LOL! But I'll be very surprised if Tekashi 69 gets the axe -- he's not the anti-mainstream hiphop subversive he appears to be. Not only is he a labelmate of Bon Jovi at Universal, the CEO of his so-called "independent" record label is the son of the CEO of Universal!!!

MTO News: Two weeks ago, the music streaming site Spotify announced that it would introduce a new policy against “hate content” and “hateful conduct”...

Activists claim that the service should ban music from Chris Brown, Eminem and others - because of what activists claim was "inappropriate behavior" with women. But now a men's group is coming out with a "ban" list also...And (on) top of the list is Beyonce's sister Solange. One popular men's activist said on social media, "Solange assaulted Jay Z, she should have her seat at the table removed."
Guess Spotify will also have to say goodbye to Courtney's Love's catalog -- she's taken a few swings at people. And this is bad news for Beyonce as well as Solange -- surely being "drunk in love" qualifies as "egregious" behavior!

Update: Crisis Over?

Quote:

Stereogum.com (May 21): Earlier this month Spotify announced that it would be removing R. Kelly and XXXTentacion’s music from its flagship playlists due to a new policy against “Hate Content & Hateful Conduct.”

...In the six days since XXXTentacion’s SAD! was removed from Spotify’s playlists...the track’s streams dropped 17 percent per day in the United States on average. That...could cost the rapper as much as $60,000 in revenue in a year...

R. Kelly’s streaming numbers, however, have actually increased...he averaged 6,584,000 weekly streams for the year. But from May 10 to May 16 he garnered 6,676,000 streams for the week...
Quote:

Stereogum.com (May 24): (The) move drew criticism from employees and prominent players in the music industry, including Kendrick Lamar, who argue that the policy will single out artists of color. Some opposing artists even threatened to remove their music from Spotify if the policy persisted...

XXXTentacion, who was charged for physically abusing a pregnant woman...(was one of)...the...initially...affected artists announced...Spotify will restore songs by XXXTentacion to their flagship playlists...The company is consulting civil-rights activists and music industry members to inform when and how to take the next step...(T)here are no plans to begin promoting R. Kelly again.
Sounds like 3XT's "slippery slope list" trick worked -- If the work of Zeppelin, Ozzy, and James Brown (and/or everyone else on their respective record labels) were to pull out of Spotify in protest, it could get awfully quiet around there! And remember, you are not to take the "removing" part literally: no one has been censored or banned, just no longer profitably -- oops, I mean, actively promoted!
