We don't have an official Queen thread yet

And everyone has an opinion of them.

Grew up with them. One of "my" first b(r)ands. I only really got into them after Freddie died (I think I was 12 then), didn't really know them, but just remember innocently feeling it was a sad thing, and now I remember, being disgusted at an early age by the crap the tabloids came out with about him.

Brian May these days seems to be an sanctimonius asshole, which is a shame (pet hate!) that does sometimes overshadow the enjoyment, but you can't deny the band, despite being over the top, had more depth and musical skill than most. Or how much of a part of your life their songs have become.

Will I'm sure think about some songs and why I love them soon enough. Except to say that Queen II is a ****ing masterpiece.

milomom 09-07-2009 08:11 PM

Bohemian Rhapsody. Enough said.

Goldsausage 09-07-2009 11:46 PM

Who Wants To Live Forever = Masterpiece

Innuendo = Masterpiece

Hell, they have so may of them, I'll stop there.

ALSO, listening The Show Must Go On chokes me up everytime, Freddie sounds so, so ill in that song :( But another masterpiece.

When I was a kid, my dad told me that I was Freddie's ghost :/ Because I was supposed to be born on the day he died, and he told me I'd grow up to learn the piano.

Well, I did take piano lessons years later. But now I've come to accept that my father may have lied to my face about being Freddie's ghost :(

Strangely enough I put the 3 queen greatest hits cd's onto my ipod tonight.

My one issue with queen is when they are good they're great (under pressure, radio gaga etc... spring to mind)

But when they're bad they're night on unlistenable imo.

Panda 09-08-2009 01:07 AM

I really like queen, but they're an on-off band for me. For a month I'll really love them, listen to them all the time, and then I'll get bored. Then, 6 months later I'll rediscover them.

Favorite songs include:

Innuendo
Under pressure
We are the champions
Seven seas of ryhe
A kind of magic
The show must go on
Bohimeian rhapsody
Headlong
Radio ga ga

I haven't listened to them in a while... Time fir a queen fix...

Captain Walrus 09-08-2009 01:17 AM

I should listen to some more of their studio albums at some point. The only 2 I've heard in full are Night At The Opera (not just about Bohemian Rhapsody ... The Prophet's Song is immense) and the new one with Paul Rodgers, The Cosmos Rocks.

IMO their better stuff was from 1980 onwards, although there's some absolute classics in their 70s material, the songs that I personally like better tend to be from the albums from The Game to Innuendo.

I guess I would have been 5 when Freddie died, I think I remember it vaguely.

Can I do a top 20 Queen/Freddie/Brian songs I wonder? Let's try. In no order:

Bohemian Rhapsody
The Prophet's Song
Another One Bites The Dust
Save Me
Don't Stop Me Now
Somebody To Love
We Will Rock You
We Are The Champions
Under Pressure
I Want It All
Innuendo
Breakthru
Who Wants To Live Forever
Hammer To Fall
The Show Must Go On
One Vision
Heaven For Everyone
Living On My Own
No One But You
These Are The Days Of Our Lives

Something like that. Most of them fairly obvious perhaps, but like I said, I've only heard one album in full from the proper lineup

I don't really like Queen. I never got that whole pompous, overblown style of their music. I can understand why people would like it as they are very good musicians and their music has lots of commercial value, but it just doesn't do it for me. Sheer Heart Attack is alright but A Night At The Opera is bollocks on toast, with one or two good songs, the rest all music hall or opera. Not feeling it.

asok80 09-09-2009 02:31 PM

One of my top favourite bands.
Heard the Sheer heart attack album at a friend's birthday party way back in 75 and fell
in love with it immediately. Unfortunately I missed them when they came to
play in Gothenburg just weeks after I discovered them so it took until -82
before I saw them live. they were brilliant (of course). A new world record is
one of my favourite albums ... along with the 5 first of course, but I must
say I love most of their stuff unconditionally.
oh! and Wembley -85 was just breath-taking. I just sat there in front of the
tv with my mouth ajar.... :-)

They're kind of like watered down prog imo.

I think that's what I don't like about them. I pretty much can't stand prog in most cases except Pink Floyd.

Floyd is also pretty much watered down prog but they at least had a message behind their tunes whereas Queen tended to be either OTT whimsical (minus the dragons and wizards of full on prog) or too airy fairy in their tunes.

That wasn't worded very well but I think what I'm trying to say is that there are no Queen tunes (minus under pressure and radio gaga) that really make a statement imo whereas floyd might also be watered down prog but they've always had something to say, a real M.O. about what they were writing.

C'monFeet 09-09-2009 05:06 PM

You Take My Breath Away is just lovely. (And Freddie really was the most charming man)

Watching this you wonder how Paul Rodgers could ever hope to compete. Freddie really was a once in a generation talent.

Queen, like a lot of the best rock, was largely about escapism. The songs were BIG enough to make you forget your troubles for a while.

They did have a few songs that had something to say, above love songs, but somethign like, say, Bicycle Race (even Bohemian Rhapsody), you just got swept up in the ridiculousness of it.

They actually weren't at their best when they did try and make a statement. Which was generally War Is Bad or Don't Kill Yourself. They just didn't have the subtelty.

C'monFeet 09-09-2009 05:19 PM

They may not have had someting universal to say, but Death on Two Legs is a wonderful statement of anger and dissapointment, and it rocks like an absolute bitch.

(makes me think I should be practicing piano right now)

Yeah that was quite shocking to see the first time. Incredible thought that
he managed to record so much even though he was very ill.
I could never understand why anyone would want to take his place,
as no-one even close to the way Freddie did.

Grypweed 09-10-2009 06:10 PM

Although I do like the songs I've heard, I've never really gotten into them, but that's not to say I wouldn't love them if I gave them a proper chance cause I prolly would.

Anyway... another of my earliest memories was wondering who the hell sung that song in Wayne's World.

C'monFeet 09-10-2009 08:12 PM

Queen's "credible" heavy-rock side is probably best explored by listening to the recent Dream Theater covers medly. Kicks a lot of ass.

He wasn't trying to compete. He did the songs his own way. He is a very different singer than Freddie. He actually sang some of the songs really well. If Brian and Roger wanted to use some Freddie Wannabe they would have given the job to someone like gary cherone.

dcj28 09-10-2009 11:38 PM

Never really got the attraction of QUEEN but I remember seeing them on LIVE AID at wembley and was one of the greatest things ive ever seen. Well Freddie still stands out in memory but you just dont notice the rest of the group IMO.

Tashjbj 09-18-2009 12:57 AM

Ah... Queen.... my first love! :) I've been a Queen fan since 1989.. although I loved them way before that.. always remember singing Bicycle Race with my sister when I was about 4!!! Anyway, it was I want it all for me.. Freddie's voice, Roger's drumming.. WOW!!! There is no one song that I love more than another, I think all of them have something and can fit any mood I am in. I'm not a great fan of Crazy little thing called love - don't know, it just never did it for me. But if I had to name a couple:

Hammer to Fall
One Year of love
Keep Yourself Alive
39 (live version in Hyde Park is the best!)
Sheer Heart Attack
Killer Queen
Somebody to love
Tie your mother down

I also love Roger's solo work - I still believe Fun in Space and Strange Frontier were very underrated, but so was The Cross. I had the privilege of seeing them live a few times (and meeting Roger - really nice guy!!) and they were amazing. I used to go to the Queen convention every year and that was so much fun... a whole weekend of Queen music.. can life get any better.
I was devastated when Freddie died... actually stayed home from school I was so upset. We lost a brilliant musician when he died, his talent was amazing.
Queen were a great band. I've seen Roger and Brian with Paul Rodgers and that is NOT Queen! Queen is all 4 members...
And Brian has always been a sanctimonious sh*t... :p

C'monFeet 10-05-2009 07:47 PM

Just listening to "Was it all Worth it?"

John Deacon's bass playing is ****ing incredible.

Oh well Queen... I was so much into them when I was 13, 14. I remember going on vacations to Scotland with my family and listening to them all the time, they were a brilliant soundtrack. Later I lost them, and nowadays I hardly listen to them. But from time to time the spark comes along... like this year I went cruising and suddenly put "A Night At The Opera" on, which I never really had appreciated as an album before. I loved it! The only weak track was "Sweet Lady", the rest is so unique and charming, it just works. "The Prophet's Song" is a masterpiece, so is "Love Of My Life".

A TV documentary got me into them, back in 1994. My brother copied me their Greatest Hits 1 & 2 on cassette. Later then "Live Killers", which he had on LP! Then I was listening to them non stop - despite the bad sound, "Live Killers" held one magical moment after the other. Unforgettable memories!

My favourite album must be "Sheer Heart Attack", there is something about it. Back then I also loved "The Works" a lot. I always held Queen as an example for a band going shit with the 80s - in the 70s they were proud not to use ANY synthesizer on their albums, then you listen to "Hot Space" and you damn the 80s. ;-) The album is not as bad as its reputation though, and the live versions rock good.

Talking about "I Want It All" - the best version must be from "Queen Rocks". It's the perfect mix between the chorus-heavy single version and the longer guitar solo from the album version.

The Sex Pistols had a much better impact than Queen. Queen just insipred a bunch of longhaired 20 minute solo loving cunts to commercialise their shit music a bit.

That quote is by Jack/Ferret.

Funniest or stupidest comment ever?

Hey, maybe that was exaggerated, and very, very biased, not to mention, in most cases, not true. But I'm not having people deny the impact of The Sex Pistols like you were.
