Spam problem
Are there any mods around? Is anyone cleaning up the spam?
And the reason for the spam is mostly likely an outdated version of the forum software (the version numebr at the bottom of the page says 3.6.10, that's from 2008!). It seems some spambots have finally found this site and are really bombing it. It could be that the only solution is to update the software to the latest version, and that's something that only Peter can do. So, are we ****ed? Ice |
I'm doing it every day I'm on, as are the other mods so please bear with us.
It's been confined to the movie forum for a while so it hasn't caused too much issue, but it seems to have escaped today. |
You have no idea how much spam we clean up on a daily basis. I issued 12 bans of spamming accounts on Sunday alone.

And it's going to keep getting worse until someone fixes the forum software. Ice |

Heh, how ironic for loads of spam to hit this very thread!
|
I don't stop by much any more, I clean up the spam in the movie forum when I do - today was the worst yet, pages and pages of it!! Ridiculous!

Just had the most I've seen yet - 142 threads :o
|
Every time I come to this site I have an urge to by a pair of Nike Trainers.
|
I just deleted nearly 2000 threads from the Introduce Yourself and Film forums. It's completely out of hand.

But the best way would be to update the message board and install new anti-spam -registration measures. Like I said, this version of the message board is years old and this will only get worse. It's also possible that someone will hack the site, since old versions usually have many security holes as well. Ice |
It's now infiltrated every forum except fun and games, with the same content. Something needs to be done.

We're doing as we can when we see them. I'm literally on and off the forum all day while I'm at work and moving hundreds of threads.
Sadly at the moment you'll just have to bare with us while we manually move and delete the spam. |

I wish I could make an announcement and say: WE DON'T WANT NO ****ING SHOES! but spambots would ignore it. LOL
|
Something that could be done would be to move Jovitalk altogther and start up a new re-vamped website. This Peter dude clearly doesn't give a monkeys anyway, and the amount of spam is ruining it. Someone should create a new sparkly re-vamped Jovitalk site and move everyone over there.

Starting a message board is easy, and it's not even that expensive. But getting people to come there or even switch over from a previous board is hard. And especially a board like this where there are tons of stuff in the archives, so to speak. It would only take some hours to put up a new board or a copy of this one if we had the files and database dumps. But it's not going to happen. More likely scenario is that Peter will pull the plug on this altogether. Ice |

Aside from extra restrictions and checks upon signup, there's nothing in our powers to change things other than to fire fight on a daily basis and hope that it doesn't disrupt the forum too much. |

You could block the individual spambots names just as you can block me or any other real person if you don't want to see their posts. But there are 9,000 spambots. |
How much could Peter possibly be charging for this board? Is it something that we could collectively raise some cash for and then buy it from him?

I reckon hack the board and steel it from him. If you know how to do that. |

I'm sure Peter started the website because he loved the band, but he's just moved on with his life as have many other fans. |

http://www.drycounty.com/jovitalk/sh...2&postcount=38 I don't know where you got that 10.000. Maybe that's a number from 10 years ago which included drycounty.com web site. I was actually contacted by some Martin guy in 2010 and I set a price at 2750 EUR then, Jovitalk + jovitalk.com domain only, without drycounty.com web site. Now I'd probably give serious thought to 2000 EUR offer. As for the spam, apparently Kev's e-mails did not reach me for some weird reason. But a message from a user regarding the snow did, so some actions have been taken regarding spam: - 1000s of users, virtually 99% of new registrations since January have been banned (if some of real new users got banned as collateral damage, e-mail me at peter5@peterweb.com) - security questions during registration process have been changed - new anti-spam measures have been added (checks agains 3rd party spammer database) Hopefully this will help. If not, there's still an option of manually approving every new registration. Peter |
