I suffered quite a bit for being a Bon Jovi fan. Nothing that upset me but you do get teased a lot.

Yup, always been the case for me, too. Stones are respected, as are U2 or any alternative, grunge or independent band, but BJ are considered commercial, cheesy and for the girls.

That's exactly right. 'Girl band', 'Old' and 'only one song!' were the usual jibes.

Really? "only one song" is particularly a stupid one. You can take many shots at Bon Jovi if you want, but being one hit (or one album) wonders is definitely not one of them.

Oh I agree. If you want to be critical, I'd say four songs are so massive that everyone will have heard of them...'Livin' On A Prayer', 'It's My Life', 'You Give Love A Bad Name' and 'Wanted Dead Or Alive'. That's not to mention other huge hits like 'Always'.

Where has the REAL Jon gone?

Even during their most successful era in the UK they were considered cheesy by a lot of non fans. They hardly ever got the praise they deserved from critics either.

It's actually testament to their songwriting and live shows that they still thrived in a difficult climate. (Number 1 Albums and sold out tours over here during the blossoming grunge scene and emergence of Britpop) - Amazing.

People like to rip Bon Jovi because they come across as cheesy but then sing along when they know a song.

Or people say they've never heard of them and you mention 'Prayer' and they go 'oh yeah, I love that song!' - Same with 'Always', 'It's My Life' etc...

I've always had people 'rip' me for it and still do. But I probably would with some of their music tastes.

Just found this. While generally not made too well, it shows that things started to really go "down hill" for Jon starting with around 2009:

Sure they are. But he seems to age rather rapidly after 2008, and that's what we've been discussing that's happened since 2011, but it actually started in 2009, according to those pictures of course, which are just one moment in time...
