Real Life: good or bad?

Real Life from 1999. I don't mind this song and the sound is certainly different from what was finally released as the album Crush in 2000.

What do you think... good or bad. Is this song criminally forgotten or should it never see the light of day again? Never played live...

trevrox 09-27-2013 12:46 AM

I love it!

Rdkopper 09-27-2013 03:12 AM

It's a perfect soundtrack song for a B rated movie.

The song is enjoyable but nothing to go jumping through hoops for.

Its better than Mr Big Time

I agree... I think the lyrics seem more inspired than anything I've heard from them in a while (still cliche', but inspired). It's good but not a song that would attract new fans.

TwinFan 09-27-2013 05:43 AM

Awesome song, and the boxset version is actually better than the original, in my opinion.

Sami 09-27-2013 06:48 AM

I always liked it. I prefer the original version, though.

Javier 09-27-2013 06:55 AM

I loved it when I first heard it. Then liked it. Then Freaking fell in love with it again when I heard the box set version, now I'm back to liking it. So I'm always positive about the song....

Sossy 09-27-2013 09:59 AM

I love this Song :D
I know 3 or 4 versions of it ans I like them all.
In my opinion the Radio edit is the best, well I dont know if its a radio edit but they played it a few times on the radio here:o

liljovi93 09-27-2013 01:27 PM

Excellent song. Always liked it and probably always will.

Shame it's been completely forgotten about by the band. Would love for them to play it live just once.

vidda 09-27-2013 02:06 PM

Itīs got many of the things a good song must have: intelligent lyrics, good harmony, and good sound.
Crush coulda, shoulda been in the vein of this song; such a pity for Davidīs injury on his fingers because it put off "Sex Sells" more than one year, enough time for Bruce Fairbairnīs passing away, and ...
Itīs not what I think, in fact I like many other Jovi songs more than this one, itīs just a fact that this is one of their 3 to 5 best songs in the last 15 years. A pity it was a song for a film and with Warner bhind...

This is not accurate and makes no sence what so ever....

Sex Sells was supposed to be Jon's third solo album and Dave's finger had nothing to do with any type of delay.

As its proven today with Richie and Tico, Jon doesn't delay anything. He'll get a fill in. Dave's finger kept him out of video so Jon replaced him a cardboard cut-out of himself.

The song is decent but it repeat "This Is Real" way too much.

Captain_jovi 09-27-2013 02:37 PM

Well it kept him out of the song recording too, not just the video. I agree though, a lot more went into the delaying of the album than his finger injury but I'm sure it had a part to do with it. I know he was supposed to play on Undiscovered Soul but couldn't.

Why would Jon use Dave for his solo album?

Captain_jovi 09-27-2013 03:12 PM

He DID use Dave for a song on his solo album ;). But Undiscovered Soul was Richie's album, not Jon's.

This conversation is starting to get confusing

Sex Sells was supposed to be Jons third solo album.

Real Life was a song written for that album around that time. They did the song in 2 days before Jon left to film U571. That was the last song Bruce Fairbarin did with them before his passing. If there was a delay, it was because of that

We were just discussing the liner notes in DA. Check out all the musicians Jon knows who could play the keys.

Richies solo albums are mainly about him taking the lead so he'll use Bon Jovi members.

Jons are more about sound, so he uses outside musicians. Sex Sells was supposed to be a solo album so Dave would not be a factor. However, their producers passing would be.

Just out of curiosity, what solo song did Dave play on?

I think we're debating two different things, sorry. Dave played keys and accordion on Staring at your window. I'm not saying anything was delayed because of his injury, I'm saying he was slated to play on Undiscovered Soul. I truly don't think SS got delayed because of him but by the time of the injury and Real Life it had already morphed into a band record, right?

Does anyone remember when it happened? Late '98 I assume?

By the time the album was going to be called Sex Sells it had already become a band album, it wasn't a solo record of Jon anymore. And yes, David not being able to play did delay the recording of the record, that and a few other factors. As for replacing; The Jon Bon Jovi of 1999/2000 would never replace David Bryan for anyone else, it's exactly what's wrong with the Jon Bon Jovi of today.

Its not Jon's choice, it's their record company. They pick the times. If it was that critical, Jon would have brought a guy into the studio to play Dave's parts.

When Dave cut his finger, he wrote Memphis. Richie was touring his solo album and Jon was filming U571.

In addition, Dave cut his finger so bad that he needed physical therapy. No one knew initially when he would actually be able to play again. It could have taken 5 years. Do you think Jon and the record company would have waited five years? They would have gotten a replacement, most likely one of the guys who played two years prior on Destination Anywhere.

I love how you all kiss Sebs ass.

You don't know that Jon wouldnt replace him. They did with Alec, they used a cut out for the video which means they still moved forward and no one knew if he would ever be able to play again. So that would have ended Bon Jovi?

You need to think more rational and understand the timeline better.

Rdkopper 09-27-2013 07:26 PM

Let me point this out. If Daves finger was an issue, then how did all those songs get recorded for Sex Sells? You know, all those songs on the box set and b sides?

Sex Sells was the working title for Jons second solo album. There was a listening party and everything. They were going to use that same title for Crush but instead decided to use Crush. Dave's finger had nothing to do with scrapping Sex Sells and deciding to do Crush. Nor did it have to do with any type of delay as the initial statement was made.

I wish there were more people here who knew what the **** they are talking about instead of making these stupid ****ing statements and then all agreeing with each other.

You're a dope...

Nothing was delayed. Sex Sells was completed and trashed. They started over with Crush which came out a year later. Ebin probably filled in for Dave until he was ready. End of story.

If you want the facts, listen to me. If not, follow the other dopes.

I'm done with this topic.

It's a good song. Nothing amazing but certainly not underwhelming or anything.

It's amazing how you can assume something and call it a fact. The FACT is that you are just assuming what went down and making an educated guess, just like the rest of the people here. Bruce's passing DID in FACT delay the release of what would eventually be called Crush. Dave's finger injury also had a hand in that as well, if you want to assume it didn't then by all means do so, but I'll take the band's interviews and statements during that time to make MY educated guess over your assumptions.....

ezearis 09-27-2013 08:27 PM

OK,OK, ;), all those "facts" Iīve taken for accurate were told by somebody Iīd taken for true. Nothing else, I didnīt look into Davidīs medical report nor accompanied him to his physical sessions. I could never know when Sex Sells was finished but in "Real Life" video there are clues for it to be a band album. I just know I know nothing.

Just one thing: wasnīt the supposed-to-be third Jonīs solo album going to be called "Retrospective" or "Introspective"? Just came to my mind

Introspective was the working title of Destination Anywhere. After that one Jon intended to make his "third" solo album more upbeat and after he wrote the song Sex Sells decided that to be the working title of it. Then that morphed into a band record, then the song wasn't going to make it so they were going to call it One Wild Night, but decided that would be a better title for a live album. Eventually they decided on Crush....

Great song! The lyrics, the music, the producing, everything is great! But I don't think it would be so "awesome" to hear it live. Maybe for a night or two, but not for every concert (like the Captain Crash)

I remember reading somewhere that a collection of Jon's solo demo from the summer of '98 was called "Introspection", but the project never saw the light of the day. I don't know how accurate the information is.

Anyway in that period the situation was really confused, even Jon said that he didn't know if he was going to release a solo record or do a band record. Only in the fall of '98, when he and Richie got together, became clear that Sex Sells would have been a band album.

Shut up, you were done with this topic. Pretty much all you're saying only seems to be making sense in your little world so just leave this topic please, thank you very much.

I am done with you.

And I shall now keep continue to reply to you just to ridicule your stupid remarks towards anything, and will then ignore you when I feel like it, just to play around with you so you get all worked up and will throw as many exclamation marks around as you can.

That's because I'm right and you are wrong once again.

The op was, Dave's finger delayed Sex Sells. Sex Sells was Jons third album that was completed. Dave's finger had NOTHING to do with that.

Even if the album was released, he still had a movie commitment to fulfill. After that they did Crush which came out in 2000. Where was the ****ing delay?
