Why are you people so afraid of words ?? Let everybody say what he thinks and each person can draw their own conclusions.

In support of David Bryan, here is a list of distinguished academics that share a similar view and moreover think that the shutdown can be worse for public health:


Dr John Ioannidis, professor of Medicine, of Health Research and Policy and of Biomedical Data Science, at Stanford University School of Medicine and a Professor of Statistics at Stanford University School of Humanities and Sciences. He is director of the Stanford Prevention Research Center, and co-director of the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS).

Dr. David Katz is an American physician and founding director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center.

Dr Sucharit Bhakdi, specialist in Microbiology. He was a professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz (Germany) and head of the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene and one of the most cited research scientists in German history.

Dr. Sunetra Gupta, professor of Epidemiology at the University of Oxford. She is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award

Dr Michael Levitt, is Professor of biochemistry at Stanford University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), a member of the National Academy of Sciences and received the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems.

Frank Ulrich Montgomery, German radiologist, former President of the German Medical Association and Deputy Chairman of the World Medical Association.

Dr Didier Raoult, director of the Research Unit in Infectious and Tropical Emergent Diseases in Marseille (France), collaborating with CNRS (National Center for the Scientific Research), IRD (Research for the Development Institute), INSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research) and the Aix Marseille University.

Prof. Hendrik Streeck, German HIV researcher, epidemiologist and clinical trialist. He is professor of virology, and the director of the Institute of Virology and HIV Research, at Bonn University.

Dr Pablo Goldschmidt, Argentine-French virologist specializing in tropical diseases, and Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris.

Dr Wolfgang Wodarg, German physician specializing in Pulmonology, politician and former chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 2009 he called for an inquiry into alleged conflicts of interest surrounding the EU response to the Swine Flu pandemic.

Dr Joel Kettner, professor of Community Health Sciences and Surgery at Manitoba University, former Chief Public Health Officer for Manitoba province and Medical Director of the International Centre for Infectious Diseases.

Dr Eran Bendavid and Dr Jay Bhattacharya, professors of medicine and public health at Stanford University.

Dr Yoram Lass, Israeli physician, politician and former Director General of the Health Ministry. He also worked as Associate Dean of the Tel Aviv University Medical School.

Dr Pietro Vernazza, Swiss physician specializing at Infectious Diseases at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen and Professor of Health Policy.

Dr Peter Goetzsche, professor of Clinical Research Design and Analysis at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and founder of the Cochrane Medical Collaboration.

Dr Karin Mölling, German virologist whose research focused on retroviruses, particularly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). She was a full professor and director of the Institute of Medical Virology at the University of Zurich from 1993 until her retirement in 2008 and received multiple honours and awards for her work.

Dr Anders Tegnell, Swedish physician and civil servant who has been State Epidemiologist of the Public Health Agency of Sweden since 2013. Dr Tegnell graduated from medical school in 1985, specializing in infectious disease. He later obtained a PhD in Medical Science from Linköping University in 2003 and an MSc in 2004.

Dr Knut M. Wittkowski, professor at the Center for Clinical and Translational Science of the Rockefeller University, New York.

Cool. Great list. Besides copying the list of names, have you read what they've said? There's a bit of subtlety in between a yes for a shutdown and a supposedly no, it's not as black and white as you make it out to be. And no, that list is not "in support of David Bryan". In the end it's not got much with this not calling it the flu though and why it's an idiotic statement to make. Besides half of the world currently disagreeing with your list here's an image that shows why "We're so afraid of words" and why they're wrong.

I will not further derail the discussion.

I just point out that yes there is a lot of subtlety to discuss about the actual threat that the virus poses and the actual consequences of our responses.

But this discussion is not taking place. 95% of people take for granted a certain kind of black and any argument towards something more ... grey, is instantly perceived as white.

The meme which you provided attests for this mono-dimensional understanding of the situation.

We shall not discuss further here, but I urge the people to be informed about different opinions on this (and any) subject. Even more-so when they come from people that are recognized as "experts" (since we value expertise that much in our current culture).
