I find it strange how Jon hires Phil X to play with him not only with Bon Jovi but also often with KOS; yet when he hits the studio, he chooses Shanks to play the guitar instead.

I think the magic words are: New Album 2016. I think Phil will be there. Or maybe just is the guy tour.

Truth! Phil is a session musician first and foremost. Could definitely add something to the sound, the way he chooses to color the songs adds a lot. I loved the work he did with the first Daughtry album. Shanks isn't bad I suppose, but Phil plays for the songs more, which is a lot closer to what Richie used to do.

But on second thought, since Phil will likely be there on tour, Jon didn't want people to see Phil as more that just a touring guitar player and not confuse him as being Richie's official replacement....
