Every year, I plan to start making my Christmas cards in October, and I end up leaving until the week before Christmas! Well, this year I've actually made a start!!

Got a decent wee camera for my birthday last month, just been messing around with it, but will need to go out and see if I can take any decent pics to share ;)

I wish I had your skill when it comes to taking pictures. Very sharp and I'm impressed by the amount of colour there is in them. Did you photoshop them a lot?

For the most part I do quite minimal editing, just using the basic RAW editor controls to fine-tune colour levels and lighting. For me it's all about trying to match the photo up to reality, to make it look how it appeared to me when I shot it - sometimes cameras are limited in that respect, so some shots can take more work than others.

For example, this was a shot I took recently at the beach - the sky was very bright so the original image had a good amount of detail in the clouds, but the sea and the boats were very dark, so I had to raise the dark levels up while keeping the bright parts from going too bright.

Sometimes I use a technique called HDR (high dynamic range imaging) which takes it one step further, by taking the same shot at different exposure levels and then merging them together to create one photo. They can look very odd because we're used to seeing photos in a certain way, but technically these are much closer to the way our eyes see things, getting beyond the old limitations of cameras.

Can't really compete with some of the pictures here since my camera is just my phone. But just wanted to post these I took last Christmas. It's pretty cool when the way you look at the places you grew up in and realize the type of beautiful scenery you used to have on your own backyard and never appreciated until now.....

I just treated myself to a new camera, upgraded from the 500D/T2i to the 700D/T5i :) More resolution, flip-out screen, little easier/quicker to focus, and better video functionality too :D

Wow I love your moon shot Neil. I brought a new camera at Xmas after seeing a video showing how it can zoom in for these type of shots. But I'm been trying to get a shot since and just can't seem to. Must be doing something wrong. 😞

You'll struggle to get a good shot of the moon unless you know what you're doing with the manual camera settings - the camera will see all the black sky and try to judge the whole shot on that, so the moon will come out like a glowing light with no detail in it.

If your camera has any kind of manual controls you need to be able to change those, looking for f-stop settings (a number, like f3, which you want to change to like f8 if you can) and then shutter speed, may be written as 1/60, that needs to be more like 1/300. If you can change those, you may get a better shot of the moon.

Thanks for the advice Neil. Will try and see what I can or can't change.
