Why? What happened to Phil in the last couple of years? Did I miss something!?

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like a Phil specific thing. More generally, for any working musician not a multimillionaire, it's been a rough few years with touring costs and revenue minimizing. Not to mention session work has been getting more and more on the really cheap side for about 10 or 12 years now. And with the mental health in decline the way it has been, especially for people with jobs that aren't steady or normal. I've been reading a lot about mental health within the music industry so that's fresh on my mind, sorry for any confusion....

Ah gotcha - makes sense now! Thanks for clarifying!

That's not Phil in the video though - that's Howie Simon.

The lighting was really bad in the video, but when I first saw it and posted it I honestly thought it was Phil. I had never heard of Howie Simon so I looked him up. A close up picture of him other than the hair doesn't look all that much like Phil, but I saw other darker pictures of Howie that I could have again believed it was Phil. Also Phil does know Nelson and they had talked of working with him. I guess I should have looked for Phil's tattoos?

Howie does seems to know his way around a guitar.

Random but cool.

"Duran Duran's Andy Taylor and other leading musicians will raise money for a cancer charity at a concert next month.

He will join Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Andrew Ridgeley of Wham!, David Palmer of ABC, Ella Henderson and guitarist Phil X."

I'm always glad when charity events are held.

Great interview with Phil. Will edit if anything interesting comes up but he ain't on salary with the band which both....surprises me and does not.

Pre-production for the new album was in Jersey, whole band playing/fleshing out the songs in the same room and then off to Nashville to record for a month.

I guess that playing includes when they are in studio working on a new Album and not just on the road touring?

Are Tico, David, and Hugh on salary?

I gotta imagine Tico and David are. I think for all the fanfare and bells and whistles in 2016, Hugh probably got a pay raise but is still a hired gun.

This came and went with no sign of Phil, so I presume he had to cancel when he was called back to work with Jovi in Nashville.

I have to imagine Tico and David renegotiated their deals with Jon post-2013. By the end of the BWC tour, it was obvious that Richie's departure did not result in a significant loss in earnings for the band, which meant there was a much larger 'pie' to share for the remaining members, given that Phil X is obviously much much cheaper than Richie was.

I have big hopes for the new album, sounds like they are going a whole new direction with it. I'm hyped, especially after what Phil X said about it.

kleman 01-26-2024 11:10 AM

Yeah that was great listen. Cant wait for new record. But in the end he said something intresting about his future.....maybe Richie will fill his spot ;)

bonjovi90 01-26-2024 11:35 AM

Jon will go nuts if the next lead guitarist abandons him to spend time with his family

rolo_tomachi 01-27-2024 11:03 AM

Phil is right about one thing, Bon Jovi needs louder guitars in the mix. I hope they get it on the next album.

Javier 01-27-2024 02:18 PM

Loved the interview. What he said about the new album made me pretty excited about it. I hope the mix reflects all the work they've put into it.

Yeah yeah yeah....
Meh! I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. It doesn't have any replay value to me but from a songwriting and arranging point of view I can perfectly understand why they would be proud of the album. ....

Man you got Phil on stage with like the two best instrumental rock guitarists in history in Vai and Satriani, in a gathering of some of the best guitarists in the world, soloing as hard as any of them, and STILL we have to put up with Shanks.. eurgh.
