I have a question if anyone knows... After the solo, you can hear Jon going "don't bend don't break baby don't back down YEAH YEAH YEAH It's my life and it's now or never". My question is, were there Yeah's in the draft of IML or this could be a way to "prepare - warmup" the voice for the chorus? I really want to learn anything about this song and follow the songwriting process... |
yes he was probably pumped and preparing for belting the chorus..
multiple takes are recorded and edited for the final result |

Short recording, but the part captured is top notch with Jon in really good form. This performance of Destination Anywhere might be my favourite one :)
Setlist: 01. Not Fade Away [0:00] 02. Every Word Was A Piece Of My Heart [3:06] 03. Queen Of New Orleans [8:21] 04. Jon greeting audience and announcing new album [13:37] 05. Ugly [14:24] 06. Jon talking about the inspiration behind Midnight In Chelsea [18:02] 07. Midnight In Chelsea [19:09] 08. Destination Anywhere [24:44] 09. Blaze Of Glory (cut) [32:44] |

There were still some nice performances of Always in 2013. From Phoenix:

This is how I imagine Santa Fe might've sounded like had Jon sung it live in 1990/91:
Nice cover! |

Breathtaking Livin' On A Prayer from the final German show in 1993. Done in the way of "An Evening With Bon Jovi", but with more emotion and when the crowd sings the full chorus over the instrumental outro, it feels really special!

Somebody quickly get this guy to stand in for Jon vocally, jesus he sounds spot on:
https://youtu.be/uPQoi9F1rGA?si=lADm6nQ-gi1ciJJG (I’d Die For You) https://youtu.be/BJNMciW7UTU?feature=shared (Hey God) PS. Original key. |

His voice is really near to Jon's voice in those eras.... |
How to perform a ballad in the 80's 101...
I'll Be There For You from Giants Stadium 1989 with a new Soundboard source (enhancing older recordings a lot, starting 1:46 into the song). Breathtaking! |

Found a great Always performance that hasn't been brought up often from Edmonton 2010. Jon was rumored to have been sick, but he sounded amazing anyway, and Richie goes for an extended outro solo because Tico misses his usual ending spot :-D Truly the band's Indian summer :)

Always, Des Moines, Iowa, 2008.
We'd had glimpses on this tour, but this was the confirmation that Jon had rekindled something in his voice we all thought he'd lost. New technique, slightly different arrival point on certain notes, but a pitch we hadn't heard for years. It was a shock, honestly. Hear the woman say 'oh wow' as he nails the end of the second chorus. I guess we had about 3 years of this voice |

EDIT: I say 5 years, because apparently Always in original was last performed in 2003, as stated under the video |

Alec John Such's last ever performance with the band as a full time member, 30 years ago this year. Jon's voice was unreal here on original key Always

I reckon this is the best live version of Always ever performed.

Very nice one, but I personally prefer the 1995 ones from Wantagh (Night 2), Milwaukee and Burgettstown.
That one from the O2 run in 2010 was pretty neat as well. The vocals came with ease: |
