Bells of Freedom

Can somebody tell me what the song is about? I thought it was about President Bush winning the Presidental election against Senator John Kerry. I have a friend who questioned if it was about 9/11. Is one of us right? Is there a specific story behind this song? Thank you in advance for your answers.

Bells Of Freedom is actually about inner-peace. I don't remember where Jon said it but he said something along the lines of "It's about finding that peace and being in that place where you feel free."

I still think that it is about the election ... "the eve of defeat" and all that

I assume he wrote it with the election in mind, regardless of what he says, but I like it as an "inner peace" song because that way it fits me better right now and I like when that happens

I thought I read it had something to do with Kerry losing too. Wasn't it in one of the fan club letters? idk.... Maybe it was written after Kerry lost the election and Jon had to find inner peace despite being very disappointed with the voting result. Just a theory.

I think the election may have influenced the song as he said:

'...I realized you couldn't be a sore loser and you couldn't be a sore winner. From Nov. 3 on, we need to come together as a country.'

Nov. 3rd was election day. No?

I don't agree with this comment by the reporter:

'AP: There is music on this album that people don't traditionally expect to hear from Bon Jovi. For example, 'Story of My Life.' Was that a conscious decision to depart from the band's rock sound?'

Depart from the band's rock sound? Has this guy ever listened to Bon Jovi? I thought this was the throw back track of the CD like 99ITS. This tune is arguably in like a 6 way tie for the best track on the CD. What a chump.

I've always thought that the meaning of this song was quite evident...
I mean to me it's all about the need of peace and yes,of course there are many reasons for one to reach out for peace,i personally don't know what Jon was looking for.
It's such a positive song, when i listen to "up the steps of the church, through the fields,in the dirt,in the dark I have seen that the sun still shines for the one who believes" i just feel better...
