Def Leppard - Viva Hysteria

So. ... anyone else excitedly anticipating the release next week? I will be picking up the Blu-Ray/CD package exclusive from Best Buy.

Dave 1986 10-15-2013 11:33 PM

Was gonna preorder it on Amazon.co.uk for the Blu Ray but strangely haven't got round to it. It's the Blu Ray I'm after the most, so I can always rip the audio if I need it.

That's what I would normally do and was set to do until I found out about the Best Buy Exclusive. I will probably still be ripping the audio for the acoustic set. Apparently it is only on the Japanese CD.

I haven't had this much of a personal Lep resurgence in years! It's been great to rediscover my love for the band. Mirror Ball finally got some heavy rotation these last several weeks.

yomamasofat 10-16-2013 05:54 AM

Yes, me. By far the best thing that they've done since Euphoria. Absolutely killer setlist.

Is that set you're talking about the acoustic medley they played on tour last year and later released as a studio version digital download? Cause I think I read earlier that it's going to be on the DVD/Blu Ray as well.

I can see why you might be excited about a new Leppard release for the first time in a while, as it's their first new live DVD/Blu Ray in 20 years. They've been long overdue on that one. Plus it's one mean set list!

I am not sure on the source of the acoustic medley, though I do know it is on the DVD/Blu-Ray.

You are absolutely right.... it's the first live video since Live In the Round (the Don Valley clips were great, but just a sampler of the show.) That one drove me mad with the anticipation... it was quite delayed and then half an hour shorter than it had been declared to be both in press and on Historia in the notes preceding Armageddon It and PSSOM. I was also a bit disappointed in the video quality, somehow it just wasn't that colorful and vivid as the two aforementioned promo videos culled from the exact same footage were. Otherwise, I loved the hell out of it. I constantly recorded the audio over the years in whatever medium was best for the time...starting with cassettes.

They are really going all out with the Viva Hysteria set. I haven't seen any of it since I wasn't able to attend the theater showings due to work. I do expect it will more than make up for the ridiculous gap since Live In the Round.

Dave 1986 10-19-2013 11:53 AM

Yea, I've never thought much of the video (and sound) quality of that show for that matter, and I've only ever seen the DVD. Never took away from how awesome the show is. The image is shoddy and the sound is quite muffled indeed, but it does kind of make you feel like you're actually "there" in the arena with them. I'm the same, I ripped the audio off the DVD and it's still a blast to just listen to. It's still on my iPhone and my flash drive for the car.

Granted, the wait for a new live DVD hasn't been quite as long and agonising for me (;)), but I've filled the void with a few bootlegs like Tokyo 1999 and the bonus DVD from Mirrorball. Plus I did see them live 4 times between 2006-2011.

I went for just the Blu Ray in the end. The BD/CD box set looks nicer but like I say, I can rip the audio if need be. Plus I find it harder to just sit and listen to CDs these days.:(

The DVD worsened the video quality. The VHS/Laser Disc was actually better. It seems like I remember reading how something happened to the film during processing that caused it to come out looking as it did. I'm so used to the audio...but I was happy when Don Valley came along. It really demonstrated the night/day difference in their live sound for the better. I was just watching that 2 weeks ago for the first time in I don't know how long. I had forgotten how good some stuff was like "Rocket."

The most recent video footage that impressed me was the Download headlining slot a few years ago. The magnitude of it both in attendance and the stage was reflective of where they should be overall. The last time I saw them was in a big top tent out in the desert at a reservation casino, not a flattering venue. That's Southern California for you. They didn't even bother with us on the Euphoria tour and I was quite looking forward to that one.

Oh yes, I definitely filled the void with stuff like Tokyo 1999. I finally got around to ripping the audio off my DVD of it just a few weeks ago for the first time. I suppose I'll get out the DVD from Mirror Ball this weekend. I pretty much forgot about it.

The one thing about the Viva Hysteria show I know is going to bug me..... Joe starts yapping during songs like Mirror Mirror, Let It Go, and Another Hit and Run... destroying the ambiance of the music. I'm hoping the clips capturing that on Amazon pretty much sum up the extent of how much he does that. I absolutely hate that. What happened to talking between songs?

danfan 10-22-2013 11:13 PM

I thought the entire show was recorded at the Vegas residency. Apparently not. At the intro to Gods of War, Joe introduces his very good friend, Steven Clarke.

Haven't watched the Blu-ray yet, but as for the CD, Mirror Ball sounds much better.

Footage of Steve's solo leading into Gods of War from Live In The Round was shown on the screen.... that's what you hear. Prior to that the original intro from the album was played over the PA, but that was cut.

I disagree... Viva Hysteria sounds better.

Bleeding Purist 10-23-2013 06:16 AM

I'll definitely be ripping the Blu Ray audio. It's the only way to get the actual Ded Flatbird set opening with Won't Get Fooled Again. The bit segues directly into Good Morning Freedom and On Through the Night on their respective nights. That is why both tracks are a bit abrupt on the CD. Love Joe's scream in it upon the curtain drop from Night 2!

Certain songs do. Sugar sounds better. Some sound the same, such as Love Bites, Hysteria, Armageddon It. Photograph sounds much better on MB, as does Rocket, even if it's the edited version.

Hey Dave, how did the rip go? I'm realizing my software isn't going to be able to rip the Blu-Ray. The only way to get the Won't Get Fooled Again intro bit is to rip the audio off the discs. It's a damn shame because it's one o the most awesome bits in the whole show.. I especially love Night 2 with how it leads into On Through The Night.

Iceman 10-24-2013 10:50 PM

****, is Best Buy really the only place that sells the BluRay/CD combo? I'd want that one, but Best Buy doesn't deliver overseas.

I think the Japanese import is the other option. Def Leppard - Viva! Hysteria (BD+2CDS) [Japan LTD... Def Leppard - Viva! Hysteria (BD+2CDS) [Japan LTD...
Not a cheap option, unfortunately.

I could forward it to you, but you are probably best off just getting the CD and BD sets individually.

I haven't attempted it yet as I don't yet have a Blu Ray drive. Sorry I wasn't clear on that one before. I kinda meant that eventually when I get a BD drive then I can rip the audio when the time comes. I doubt a PC from 2007 would have the stamina for a blu ray drive to be honest!

Shame you've not been successful with your ripping. I've never used BD audio ripping software (obviously), only DVD Audio Extractor. The latest version must be supporting BD by now.

Yea it's wrong about the BD/2CD package being a Best Buy exclusive. Despite what I said in my previous post, if that weren't the case I'd be all over that version.

Probably be cheaper to buy a Blu Ray drive and software to rip it!

I take it back. Head to Ebay and you'll find a bunch of "Buy It Now" sales of the Best Buy version. http://m.ebay.com/sch/i.html?kw=def+...=1&bin=1&so=12

Thanks! I think that's where I'm going to get it from.

I could have sworn I already purchased the BD Audio Extractor from IMToo, but I guess it was another one. I'll just have to hold off. It seems the DVD has low audio levels, so that is a no-go as a solution even if it would be cheaper to buy the DVD and rip it than buying the software to rip the BD. Oh well, I have other BDs that I could get around to ripping as well, but have been lazy because all of them are already released on CD/Mp3.

Can't you adjust the audio levels from the DVD?

Just had a very brief watch of a few songs and I noticed one thing that's really annoyed me. On Photograph Joe switches between singing it properly and that screamy voice he does right in the middle of some lines (whereas on MB he seemed to sing certain lines in each style, not switching between them). Did this irritate anyone else?

Yup. I noticed it too.

The screamy type voice never bothered me on Mirror Ball before now, but after he sings the first line of the chorus properly on Viva Hysteria switching to the other voice really annoys me. It sounds much better sung 'properly'. What do you think?

Edit: just listening to it again now and it's a combination of the above 'screamy vs normal' voice issue and the fact that his screamy voice on Viva Hysteria is just weirder compared to how he sings on Mirror Ball

samboraisgodUK 10-28-2013 06:35 PM

Also, just to clarify, I haven't been able to watch the blu-ray yet but I've downloaded what I thought would be the whole performance but it's missing the Ded Flatbird part. On IMDb there's a criticism that this part is missing too but I was under the impression that the opening set was on the blu-ray and amazon isn't showing a setlist... so what's actually on it?

EDIT: So, this Blu-Ray on the US Amazon is showing the full 29 song setlist - Viva! Hysteria [Blu-ray] Viva! Hysteria [Blu-ray]
Yet, the Blu-Ray on the UK Amazon only lists a 93 minute run time, which is only half the set Def Leppard -Viva! Hysteria Bluray Blu-ray 2013... Def Leppard -Viva! Hysteria Bluray Blu-ray 2013...
Is the UK being shafted here?

Nights 1 and 2 of the Ded Flatbird sets are in the Bonus menu. The Hysteria set is it's own menu. So since you downloaded it, you only downloaded the latter stream. I'm sure the DVD and Blu Ray is the same as everywhere else.

London To Vegas

This was announced a little while ago;

https://www.defleppard.com/just-anno...s%f0%9f%92%a5/

I didn't see the point in starting a brand new thread and I thought this existing one is more relatable to this news as it includes another "Hysteria-played live-in-full" type show.

I like that they're releasing a lot of live stuff these days as they practically abstained from doing so since the early/mid 90's and throughout the 2000's but I'm not sure I care to hear/see yet another Hysteria-played-live-again release.

Just a couple of days away from release. I wasn't initially excited about the Hysteria show, but it's evident that this will stand-out from the Viva Hysteria! show. The staging and lighting is superior, as is the sound. Lasers have always been strongly associated with Hysteria given the popularity and longevity of the "Pour Some Sugar On Me" video, so having them as such an integral part of this new show restored what was missing from the 2013 performances. It has an overall more epic feel to it with the audience loudly singing along. I already enjoy "Run Riot" from this set much more than from the previously released show.

As I went to 3 of the Las Vegas shows from last year, I'm quite excited for the second half of this set.

Dave 1986 05-25-2020 11:34 PM

"Billy's Got A Gun" and "Paper Sun" from Hits Vegas;

Nailed them both. Will most probably pick this up seeing as there's nothing else do to these days.

Dave 1986 07-26-2020 03:14 PM

Let Me Be The One

"Let Me Be The One" from the album X.

Interesting song choice, especially considering the X album has been largely abandoned since it's 2002/2003 tour. X is an album I probably listen to the least and I find most of the songs, including this one, blur into one. However seeing it performed live now (well, 2019) I'm feeling a (slight) new found appreciation for it. It's nothing special and when when it comes to ballads, the band have got plenty of other to choose from when it comes to playing live, but this performance helps it stand out for me and I'd probably now go as far as saying it's probably one of the last decent ballads that they've written. "Long, Long Way to Go" was not written by the band so it looses out to this one and none of the others from Songs from the Sparkle Lounge or Def Leppard really did anything for me.

It's still nice to see the band representing some of their lesser-achknowledged albums even if they're considered weaker and they pulled this one off nicely.
