Yes he does write his own material. Not all of it, but he is involved in most songs and has written many of his big hits on his own. Beat It for example was written solely by Michael Jackson. As are Billie Jean, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Dirty Diana, Another Part Of Me, Smooth Criminal, Leave Me Alone, and the list goes on and on.
Not getting the Michael Jackson thing is pretty ignorant. He changed the way video clips were made, did spectacular live shows (even when he mimed everything) and has made the biggest impact on pop music any pop musician has ever made. Not getting his songs is one thing, but not getting the Michael Jackson thing is a bit silly.
