If you are going to add the image in the mp3, then I recommend you first convert the artwork into jpg in a medium range quality so that it takes up less space, since my artworks are in uncompressed png, and each picture occupies from 4 to 7 megabytes.
If you convert it to jpg to add it to mp3, the image will occupy between 300 to 500 kb, and it will save space. I usually use PNG artwork to include it inside the album folder.
Why such a high resolution to later see it on a phone or similar? Well, technology advances faster than we think, 8-9 years ago, I did a project, my own artworks of all the bootlegs that I had, I used to do medium quality covers, and with the passage of time almost all of them stayed obsolete. It will probably also happen with these too, but at least they will hold out a little longer, or so I hope.
I don't usually do back covers, because I no longer listen to music on CD, everything is through my computer, phone or hi-res player. Also to save space at home. I have a lot of burned CDs & DVDs - half are no longer playable, so on my shelf in physical format I only have official material and some pressed bootleg CDs (not burned CDs).
At the end of the day, it's just one thing for fun.
