Absolutely flawless albums

This is not a list thread. This is a topic so that people can post their opinions on what are great albums, that are more or less perfect. Basically I'll knock a few off, and then people can say their favourite albums.

In no particular order...

The Beatles - Revolver
Wow. Half an hour of genius psychedelic pop/rock. Has only been beaten once.

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
One of my favourites at the moment. More poppy than Revolver but still pretty psychedelic. Absolutely perfect collection of beautiful songs.

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
The greatest album of all time. Slide Away is the greatest song of all time. I'm sure the hair metallers on here will scoff at that but I probably hate your choices even more...

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Brilliant album. Ian Brown's vocals, while not technically great, blend with the sublime music to create the ultimate indie album.

Neil Young - On The Beach
Another one of my favourites at the moment. Ranging from angry blues to soft acoustic music, these are eight essential tracks.

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
The ultimate heroin drenched rock 'n' roll record. Production and arrangement excellent, but not as much as the songs themselves, and their sleazy riffs.

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society
Quintessentialy British...a pure classic, going back to the old ways of British society in some brilliant reto rock.

Post your favourite albums now...I'm going to bed.

Dave 1986 12-20-2008 12:08 PM

2 albums come to mind right now...

Bryan Adams - Reckless
An album that always comes to mind when I think of a "flawless" album. 10 songs, none of them skippable, perfectly well-crafted and, at around 35 minutes run time, goes to show that an album doesn't have to be that long to be good.

Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
The perfect balance of hard rock and the intensity of heavy/thrash metal. This is probably what most hard rock bands should have sounded like in the 90's, or at least how hard rock could have competed with grunge. Totally raises the bar from their already near perfect debut album. The debut blows you away, but S2TG totally bulldozes you. Sebastian Bach shows off possibly his best vocal ability and I can't think off the top of my head who sounds any better.

Goldsausage 12-20-2008 05:29 PM

BAT OUT OF HELL - MEAT LOAF
A masterpiece. Meat Loaf is one of three rock artists that got me into rock full time. I remember my dad always playing this album when I was young but back then nothing was greater than Steps for me so I ignored it all. Until one day, when I was about 10 or 11 my walkman and I were feeling a bit lonely so I stuck in the first CD I saw on the CD rack...Bat Out Of Hell. Within the space of pressing play to reaching the end of the final song I had fallen in love, especially with the title track. I played the 10 minute title track so often in that one night that I learnt the majority of the words - which turned out to be a bit of a curse the next day :p The next day I was in school and in the lesson History I was supposed to be writing an essay on Native Americans but somehow subconciously started writing the lyrics to Bat Out Of Hell but did not realise until my teacher came round, told me off and kept me in during lunch to write the essay again :( But hell to that, it's a great, epic rock album and I still love it to this day.

STRANGER IN THIS TOWN - RICHIE SAMBORA
Never in my life did I think I'd listen to the blues and enjoy it, but I had to get this album to help on my way to completing all things Bon Jovi. Upon first listen I couldn't hate any album any more than I did this. But Jem and a few other Jovi fans seem shocked at this so I felt stupid for hating it, so I continued to listen to it and on the second listen I liked it a bit more, then the third a bit more up until about the 5th time when I declared it was one of my favourite albums. The first half of the album is a lovely masterpiece of blues and then into the latter half it delves into rock blues, great album.

PYROMANIA - DEF LEPPARD
Def Leppard hit the big time with glossy glam metal hits like Pour Some Sugar On Me, Animal, Let's Get Rocked and more, but prior them days Def Leppard were more like AC/DC...but better. Pyromania doesn't have a single skippable track (much like all the albums in this list), tracks like Rock Rock (Til You Drop), Stagefright and Rock Of Ages are freakin' awesome. Billy's Got A Gun is not just one of the best tracks on the album but also of the entire Def Leppard catalogue. Joe Elliot's vocals have never been the best but I believe back in these days it was the best and fitted the music perfectly.

HIGH 'N' DRY - DEF LEPPARD
The album before Pyromania and perhaps slightly better, but I'm not sure as I haven't had the album long so it's still new and fresh to me. This album contains some brilliant rock tracks such as the title track, You Got Me Runnin', Lady Strange and Mirror Mirror (Look Into My Eyes). It's just a great balls to the walls rock album (is that how the saying goes?).

THESE DAYS - BON JOVI
From the start to the end this moody album is beautiful. Made up of a few great rock tracks like Hey God, Damned and Something For The Pain. The rest of the album isn't made up of loud songs but instead beautiful songs. These Days is aa big fan favourite (much like the album itself), My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms could be described as nothing else but amazing. Something To Believe In is one of my favourite all time Bon Jovi tracks. And all the other songs are just as good as well, but I can't be bothered writing anymore.

BAT OUT OF HELL III: THE MONSTER IS LOOSE - MEAT LOAF
I'm bored of this game now so I can't be bothered to write much but this is a great epic album.

I'll do more later :p

Ok, so you say i get bullied by my teacher for getting told to sit at the front, but you get told off, kept in at lunch and have to write an essay again? I think that's a lot worse.

Anyway, Erm... These Days for me. I don't have much of a CD Collection.

Goldsausage 12-20-2008 05:58 PM

Yeah but you kept complaining that your teacher kept telling you off for doing nothing. I deserved all my telling-offs, being moveds, being kept ins, getting kicked out of classrooms, etc etc.

No, that time i got moved to the front, i didn't do anything. We're going to start going off topic here.

These are the three that are my favorite, "flawless" albums:

Pink Floyd- The Wall
I don't know how to describe it, it almost tells a story. From Comfortable Numb, to the well known "Another Brick In The Wall" Series, to all the other classics on that album. I'm sure that if every single song on that record was a single, it would sell quite well.

Jon Bon Jovi- "Blaze Of Glory"
What makes this record interesting is that I think that the title track of the record, also the song that won a golden globe, nominated for an Oscar, and helped reach this record to number one, is one of the worst songs on the record. From very powerful vocals in "Santa Fe", uplifting lyrics from "Bang A Drum" (A personal favorite), and amazing ballads from "Blood Money" to "Miracle". Even the beginning of the album which starts off with a bang with "Billy Get Your Guns". It's a good record because in between each song there is parts of the Young Guns II movie in between some of the song, usually emphasizing the mood of the upcoming song, and maybe even try to explain where Jon got the inspiration from.

U2- "The Joshua Tree"
This is an indescribable album. Either you like it, or you won't. The song that triggered me to buy the album was the hit "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". And there are still plenty of classics in the record that have been undiscovered to the people who haven't listened to it as a whole. I like this record because I can out it on before I fall asleep, If I'm feeling a little depressed, or even when I'm feeling good, and i need some U2 to listen to. One song cannot describe this record, so I recommend you put your pants on, go to the store and pick up "The Joshua Tree" if you haven't yet.

-Naturally my other two albums would be "Stranger In This Town" and Keep The Faith". But you guys already know about it so I'm not going to bother.

and others include:
O.K Computer -Radiohead
American Idiot- Green day
Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band- The Beatles.
Rumors- Fleetwood Mac

hackster73 12-20-2008 06:44 PM

Radiohead - The Bends

Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast

REM - Automatic For The People

These are a few that spring to mind, some because of the songs included, some because of the general flow of the album.

RSROCKS 12-20-2008 07:55 PM

Is there really such a thing as a "flawless" album? What are we saying "flawless" truly means?

-K9- 12-20-2008 09:10 PM

There Is Nothing Left To Lose - Foo Fighters
A Boy Named Goo - Goo Goo Dolls
Stay Hungry - Twisted Sister
Destroyer - KISS
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Dancing Undercover - Ratt
Song From Sparkle Lounge - Def Leppard

each of those albums are flawless imo because each song on the album is a perfect 5/5 for me :D

It DOES tell a story, that's partly when I love it so much. However I'm sure that not every song would sell well as a single, let's be honest here.

Jim Bon Jovi 12-21-2008 01:46 AM

kudos to the people who mentioned the bends and the wall 2 of my absolute favourite albums.

my pick would have to be simon and garfunkel bridge over troubled water.

BonJovi1988-1992Mark 12-21-2008 03:24 PM

At the moment:

1.Hysteria
2.Reckless
3.Back In Black
4.Pryomania
5.Waking Up The Neighboors

Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled WAter
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Led Zeppelin - Fourth Album (untitled)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (With an honourable mention for The Wall)
Paul Simon - Graceland
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

hometownboy 12-21-2008 09:42 PM

Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park N.J
Otis Redding - Otis Blue (that is one of the best albums i've ever heard)

that's all that comes to mind at the moment

Sleep-When-Im-Dead 12-22-2008 12:50 AM

Bon Jovi- New Jersey/SWW/TD : Perfection IMO not a song i dont like on all of these albums bon jovis absolute best.
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust / Hunky Dory : Ziggy stardust is one of the all time best albums, great great rock n roll tracks telling the story of an alien rockstar and hunky dory is a great collection of brilliant short tracks most of which are bowies best.
Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers : Can't fault this album, i know people think poorly of this band because of "stacy's mom" but they really are much more than that, not a bad track on this disk i love it Can highly recommend it.
Richie Sambora - Undiscovered Soul
Oasis - Defiantly Maybe / Morning Glory - Oasis at their best two albums packed full of great songs showing how great this band could be, imo there yet to top these first 2.
The Who - Who's Next : Great good old fashioned rock n roll from the who, great tracks such as wont get fooled again and behind blue eyes. Such an awesome album with some great stuff on it.

JerseyboyUK 12-22-2008 01:45 AM

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

Radiohead - The Bends

U2 - The Joshua Tree

Captain Walrus 12-27-2008 01:28 AM

Ten by Pearl Jam is absolutely what I would regard as the perfect album from start to finish. I first heard this album 5 and a half years ago, and I've yet to hear anything I like better

Certainly NOT A SINGLE Bj album as they all contained fillers!

What filler is on New Jersey, or These Days?

An album where every song is perfect?

I don't think I own any, but Stranger In This Town is about as close as it comes for me.

IV by Jaded Heart is also one hell of an album. New Jersey & These Days too. Bad by Michael Jackson (OMG THANK GOD HE'S ALIVE).

HA.

Crushgen24/88 12-27-2008 06:43 AM

IMO, these albums have absolutely no filler, no bad songs. Perfection:

"Let It Be"-The Beatles
"New Jersey"-Bon Jovi
"The Stranger"-Billy Joel
"American Idiot"-Green Day

I'd say I've never heard such an album. Every album has songs that I don't like as much as the others for whatever reason

*ºÇåptäîn¤Çrä§hº* 12-29-2008 02:08 PM

Pretty much flawless albums to me are:

Bon Jovi - New Jersey
Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze Of Glory
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A.
Paul Simon - Graceland
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Bob Dylan - Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid

Thunderstrucker 12-29-2008 03:10 PM

Tough one.
I have different 'periods' per year, in every period I 'learn' to appreciate another album and 'understand' it. For now the list for me is as follows:
- Pink Floyd / The Wall: An experience on itself
- Pink Floyd / Dark Side of the Moon: Again an experience on itself
- Richie Sambora / Stranger in this Town
- Bruce Springsteen / The Rising: 74 minutes of solid rock songs
- Bruce Springsteen / Devils & Dust: A dark album but very intimate
- Bon Jovi / New Jersey: I had my doubts either to put KTF or NJ here and found out I like all songs on NJ where I only like 9 of KTF.

This is it, for the moment.

I salute you,
Thunderstrucker

Kathleen 12-29-2008 05:11 PM

Nice to see that someone loves The Rising as much as I do. It's not on my list because I have never been able to separate my emotional response from my critical response. That album was such a factor in my area healing after 9/11 that I think it's wonderful. For 9 out of 10 nights in Giants Stadium I watched people in tears during one or another of that albums songs. By the end of the summer of 2003 when all The Rising shows were over - I finally felt like we could all move forward and get past 9/11.

So it's a flawless album for me but it's so personal that I'm not sure that it's that good. It was certainly the perfect album for that time in history.

Thunderstrucker 12-29-2008 05:17 PM

Allthough it's good to have music that helps you with processing huge things as this, I don't think of 9/11 when I am listening to that album. I think only American people do.
I know it has been written for it but 9/11 doesn't live in me.

I have the Tour Edition of the album and allthough the bonusdvd doesnt have a great deal to offer it's a nice package of one of the best, maybe THE best album of Bruce Springsteen.

I salute you,
Thunderstrucker

-K9- 12-29-2008 05:21 PM

flawless albums, lets see

Bon Jovi - This Left Feels Right
Metallica - St. Anger
Van Halen - Van Halen III

:p

Thunderstrucker 12-29-2008 05:23 PM

lol, I even don't have to reply sarcastic on that one, you already did it yourself :D

I salute you,
Thunderstrucker

i;ve been ona bowie kick all week.

if i didn't mention it in my last post in here ziggy stardust definitely goes in here as does hunky dory.

listening to that era of bowie genuinely makes me jealous of his song writing abilities and i've NEVER felt like that about any other writer.

i know bowies songwriting is amazing, especially hunky dory through to diamond dogs, cant say i enjoy his 80's stuff that much but there are some gems in there:cool:

Malachy 01-10-2009 07:33 PM

Bat Out Of Hell,

yes its over the top, opra, bombastic rock,

but for the 6 songs on the ablem, from bat out of hell to (for) crying out loud,

the album is note perfect, the songs are fantasticly crafted (lyrics do what they are meant) the vocals, the piano work, guitar,

the album is a masterpiece! all songs are amazin, not one filler in sight, hence why its one of the biggest selling of all time!

Yeah, he is a great songwriter. His 80's albums/songs are great i think. I love Heathen and Reality though.

aph01 01-10-2009 08:35 PM

I own loads of 'greatest hits' albums, but not as many albums, but here is my list in no pareticular order:

Def Leppard - Hysteria and Pyromainia
Meat Loaf - Bat 1, 2 and 3
Nickelback - All the Right Reasons and Dark Horse
Daughtry - Daughtry
Bon Jovi - SWW and New Jersey
The Darkness - Permission to Land and One Way Ticket To Hell
Green Day - American Idiot
Guns N Roses - Appetite
My Chemical Romance - Black Parade

And, at the risk of loosing all 'street cred'....Mcfly - Radio Active (friggin rockin album)

I love bands like Toto, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Whitesnake, MJ, Journey, Goo Goo Dolls, Clapton, Elton John, Bryan Adams and many more, but I dont actually own an album of theirs, just greatest hits or live albums. I didnt actually realise that until I started thinking about this list!! Maybe I shold start buying some albums!

Thunderstrucker 01-10-2009 08:39 PM

How on earth can you call Dark Horse a flawless album ?
Don't reply with saying you think the lyrics are fantastic haha

I salute you,
Thunderstrucker

JerseyboyUK 01-10-2009 08:47 PM

'Dark Horse' whilst stinking bad is hardly the worst on the list, what about some of the others ie. 'Daughtry'?!?! a flawless album????????? Get a grip fella.

Thunderstrucker 01-10-2009 10:03 PM

That could have been my reply as well but I chose to keep it a bit friendly haha, nevertheless I do completely agree.

I salute you,
Thunderstrucker

hometownboy 01-10-2009 10:09 PM

lol and the mcfly album :p

Goldsausage 01-10-2009 10:12 PM

Oh c'mon guys give him a break, he's Irish, they can't help being crazy.

aph01 01-10-2009 10:53 PM

I was expecting that sorta response. As I said, I dont own a whole pile of albums, mainly just greatest hits stuff.

Yeah, I hear you about Nickelback. Most people put their noses in the air and say they are shite, but i dont agree, They are good at what they do. There songs sound pretty similar at times, but I just find them catchy, fun to play on guitar and easy to listen to. I dont tend to skip any tracks when I listen to these albums. Yep, the lyrics are crap, most songs revolve around sex or drugs, but as I said, I find them catchy and addictive. You know what they say...whatever floats your boat!

Mcfly is a little shameful i must admit, I tried my best not to like it, and I think I should be given a bit of credit for having the courage to let you know I like them. I bet there are plenty of people on this board who like them, but would just prefer to keep it to themselves! Most of the tracks on the new album are influenced by 'classic rock', most of you could probably appreciate 'everybody knows', 'pov', 'the last song' and many more. I dare you to listen!! Most of you think of their poppier stuff like star girle etc (which I dont like), but the most recent album isnt like that. On second thoughts, it may not be a flwless album, but it is a complete turnaround from their former stuff, and I love it!!! Plus it was free!!!
