Something a bit more raw and heavy and less commercial.

The best tracks for me are In and Out of Love, Only Lonely, Silent Night, Tokyo Road, Hardest Part and Secret Dreams. There are a few filler tracks but its pretty solid overall.

The production is very 80's and not as slick as their later efforts. I like the dark, smokey feel of the album and the band create pretty good atmosphere with songs like Tokyo Road.

Richies guitar playing is amazing as always and he has some great solos. The drums on the album are very loud which is good but sometimes need to sound a bit sharper and not so boofy. Jon's voice is strong and he does a great job.

Overall I'd put this album in their top 5. It's grown a lot on me over the past year or so and I think it never really got the attention it deserved. They should give songs like Bad name a rest in their live show and bring back some of the tracks off this album. I can't really see that happening though.

same as you
i listen to runaway and this album quite often

i like their raw sound also like the sound in 90's
loud drum with heavy guitar riff and fast solo
also jon singing strong

especial song like (i don't wanna fall)to the fire with the powerful beat
it's very good

i don't understand why this album is crap and it's said by jon

they don't like to play the heavy song now?
or they think people or fans don't this kind of sounds now?

at least
i think silent night is a great song that should be play even they don't want to play heavy stuff anymore
and also get ready from runaway

(bad english,pls don't mind  )

The firts record is called BON JOVI , not RUNAWAY as you seem to think.

Memories it brings back to me:

Listening to it for the first time while playing Metroid Fusion on the Game Boy Advance, and later listening to it again while playing Metroid Prime on the GameCube

Being immediatly struck by Onyl Lonely and To The Fire

Discovering that I also love Price Of Love and Hardest Part Is The Night

Watching all the promo videos from it which I had downloaded late at night last summer

Hearing In & Out Of Love for the first time on One Wild Night Live, on a long car journey at night

Rediscovering In & Out Of Love while at a party at my cousin's house

Being blown away by parts of Silent Night ... not the whole song unfortunately

Not too many memories for this one yet either, oh well :)

Keep On Rockin'

7800 and These Days are the only two Bon Jovi records I consistently go back to and listen head to toe. I don't think it's Bon Jovi's best by any means, but the mood is there, it's dark, heavy and atmospheric. Overall, pretty much one of the best records to be released by anyone between 1981 and 1985, before Slippery When Wet came along and shook up the hard rock landscape. Hilarious that it's the same band.

Happy birthday 7800!

For the first time since the 80’s, I listened to the album from start to finish today. (The only song I sometimes listen to is In&Out. )

What a forgotten gem. Of course, the production isn’t perfect. Some of the lyrics are a bit silly I guess. That said, I loved what I heard today. Raw distorted guitars, catchy melodies, Jon’s high pitched screams. Even songs I didn’t like too much back in the 80’s (KOTM, TTF) now sounded more or less like anthems. The biggest surprise for me was obviously ARTY. I guess I never realized it’s power back then. What a cool, ass kicking hard rock song.

A band that would be on the top of the world the next year. It gives me the chills to think of that. It’s the same feeling I get watching the live video from Montreal 1986, Bon Jovi opening for Judas Priest. In a few weeks from that moment, they would be the heavy weight champions.

Honestly, I had never really understood the album’s real power. I found the band in the SWW era (LOAP had just topped the charts) so it got sort of overshadowed by SWW for me.

What a cool album.
