This is Bon Jovi, no shakespeare, I don't understand this disappointment in the lyrics. You may be disappointed because it is not catchy, or there is not enough guitar, the voice is terrible, but come on, the lyrics was always lazy and cheese usually, except for some rare exception.

About the song, i like. Of course it is no better than Beautiful Day but ok. :p

Oh I had almost forgotten about Beautiful Day, your favourite :D
What makes it more striking is that, in the past, Jon could sing the cheesiest lyrics in the world in such a way that you pumped your fist in the air and belted your lungs out. When recited, it doesn't work that well. And the song is more of reciting than singing which, of course, could've been done on purpose.
Something about it puts me off, but I can't say what exactly. For example, I love Not Running Anymore, another example of an "unexciting approach", but something doesn't work with this one for me.

I dont see BJ lyrics as lazy and cheesy and KF and TD are great example. Rare is not the right word. Even SWW nad NY have great lyrics, every album pretty much but TD is top of their songwritings. I only find one song that way BWC,for me the worst single and lyrics.

Not Running Anymore is really boring, but in the mark 3:24 of the song break that monotony and raise it.
Is for this that, Not Running is better than The Fighter.

KTF and TD is from the last century, but neither is it shakespeare. In These Arms is not a great song for its lyrics. TD could be those rare exceptions as I said.

I am very clear what Bon Jovi is, one of his strongest points was energy and passionate delivery. That is missing. Well, and also Sambora. :(

That's how I feel, too, Dominik. I loved both Not Runnun' and Old Habits but I just can't wrap my head around this one. It's rare that I don't like a Bon Jovi song, including their solo songs; but this may be the only one, other than WFTWM that I can't say I find anything to like. It drags. Rolo's version sounded better; but there's only so much you can do with it. It's not 'musical'. I can understand why it sounds almost like a recitation, because it's not really a singable song. And it's god-awful depressing. I get that PTSD is a heavy subject; but there's no light in the song at all . The tunnel goes on and on with no end in sight. Even the trailer from the documentary had some bright spots.

I'm not a fan of Leonard Cohen, and I know Jon is, so maybe that was the mood he was going for. But this reminds me of everything I don't like about Cohen's stuff. It's lifeless and depressing.

After reading multiple comments, it's mainly Jon's voice that is throwing Unbroken off for everyone.

This is probably a song he plans to perform live and chose to keep it as close to his natural voice as possible. Let's just hope the rest of the album isn't like this or maybe even this isn't the finished album version. If the album is still being worked on, hopefully this needs to be mastered.

I'm very curious why you think this is his natural voice. It sounds filtered to hell with traces of Autotune to me.

First off, I don't believe anyone can hear traces of Autotune. This is not Kanya West.

But sure, he's in a studio so bummed notes are going to be fixed however his tone sounds very rough like his live voice, unlike the way it did with the 2018 recordings of WWWU and Walls...

Jon has issues keeping up... I guess it's breathing based on what everyone says. The lack of vocal range in combination with the slower pacing is just making the song lifeless.

Regardless of whether or not it's autotune, his voice is filtered to hell. Compare the vocal track with a lot of pre-2005 songs or even most of LH. That's his natural singing voice. Since then it all sounds like he's singing through a sock or the compression is jacked way too high.
