It's because, on this European tour, Jon realized that it's too taxing for him to continue that way and that they fell flat on some audiences (especially on Scandinavia at the start). There was a meetup with Richie in the one week break and they decided to just do a few songs together again to see how it goes. The whole uncertainty of the situation also caused more stress on Jon and was the explanation behind his decline after the short break.
Phil got wind of it and that's why Jon kept repeating the "he'll stay here until the end" phrase on shows after the break, to take the wind out of the whole thing. It's also why Phil reacted that way on Twitter because he doesn't know if some of the already existing stuff has been rerecorded in that process. Furthermore that's why almost no material after "day 1, song 1" was posted on social media since Richie was there of some days and it shouldn't be known in case they simply don't get it going again. At the same time, that's the reason why we haven't heard from Richie's solo album works in weeks and weeks.
