I didn't get to tape it to truly transcribe it, but this is what I was able to get from the interview as it went on. Please give credit to Mary Beth Jahn if you want to use this for your site/mailing list:
Interview with Jon Bon Jovi, WTMX, Chicago, Illinois
Tuesday, July 8, 2003
The interview started with the female DJ talking about how she went to LBI for the July 4 weekend, to Beach Haven. Joe Piscopo was there, she stayed next door to his parents' house. Jon said he was home for July 4 and went to the beach in NJ the night of the 4th. Talked about what parkway exit all the beaches are. Talked about how the Chicago show is Friday night and their first show in the U.S. since Europe and they’re back with the Goos for the first time since the spring and how Live opened for them in Europe. They have a whole new stage set and production from the winter shows. They're coming back to Chicago b/c they like it so much. Completely different show. Kidded about selling the satellites. Said the radio station could give one away, the listener could strap it on their roof at home. DJs mentioned that the first Chicago show this year was Jon's b'day, this Friday is Richie's birthday. Jon acts like he didn’t know, then says they're pretty devious, lot of things they do for birthdays. Talking about an alligator on the stage (???) previously, and the cheerleaders at the hotel. Apparently, the radio station provided arena football cheerleaders for them last time. Talking about arena football now, how Jon likes it, don’t have a franchise in Jersey, closest will be Philadelphia. DJs say they were talking previously about Jerry Seinfeld, how he took a million bucks to play an hour for someone’s birthday party; asked Jon if someone approached him to pay $1 million for one hour performance at a birthday party, would they do it? He's saying yes, he'll take the check, if it doesn't bounce, he'll do it. A million bucks an hour? Absolutely, he's there. He'd start doing matinees. Talking about comedians -- went to see Dennis Miller last time in Chicago. Jon it's a much better deal than being a musician -- he had to take music lesson, do 3 hour shows, sweat and run around a stage, write albums, etc., comedian's a much better deal. DJs asked him to tell a joke, Jon says he doesn't have any jokes, none of his jokes you can tell on the radio. DJs say let’s play 10 Questions with Jon Bon Jovi, since he gets asked the same questions all the time, maybe some of these he hasn’t heard. Tell him to pick a question between 1 and 10. Picked #6 -- when you hear a BJ song on the radio, do you turn it up or change the station? Says now he maintains the volume but doesn't change the station, he's used to it. It took him a long time to get used to it. No, he doesn't sing along. DJs laugh and ask if he corrects people in the car who are singing along and use the wrong words. Laughs and says no. Picked #3 -- when you're on stage and 20,000 people are singing, do you ever think I can sing "Row Your Boat" and they'll join in? No, no no. Didn’t seem to think this was too funny. Female DJ said something about the review the day after the show if he did this.
Picked #4 -- do you still have clothes from the 80s and think "I wish I could wear them again?" He said he still has those clothes and he still fits into them, but when the plane goes down, the museum will look good! Picked #8 -- Do you ever wake up and think I'm in Bon Jovi -- cool! Ha ha, that's great. Yeah, every day when I pull down my driveway!
Jon thinks the DJs are wacked, says it's his favorite interview. DJs remind him of Richie’s birthday Friday, and Jon says he won’t forget.
