Bad Show?

I pulled this from Backstage, just to see other views of Friday's show.

The Friday show in Chicago at the Tweeter Center. This was the worst Bon Jovi concert I have ever seen. Now before you all start passing judgment on me, let me explain a little. I have been a Bon Jovi fan since 1985. I went to my first Bon Jovi show in 1987 and have seen every Chicago show there has been (with the exception of the House of Blues show, still mad I missed it). I have stood up for the Band for a long time. It's not easy being a Male fan of the Band. But I respect the band. And really dig their music. And I listen to the words, what each song has to say. I think Jon and Richie write some of the greatest songs together. They tell the stories of all of our lives. We can all relate to at least one song or another. I love listening the their music. It takes me away to another place.
Now back to the Friday show. Now I know there will be no other show like the one they played in Chicago at the United Center last winter. That, my friends was a very special night. A show of shows. We that were in attendance were very lucky to see a show like that. They were on top of there game that night. So I'm not comparing Friday's show to that one. I'm comparing it to every other Bon Jovi show I have seen. This show was not the 2 1/2 hour wild show I have come to expect. They really did nothing new. It lacked the power of their other shows. They did not impress me. I did have a good time, singing every word to every song. Someone even turned around and said they could not believe I knew every word to every song. But that's me, just a very big fan of Bon Jovi. I guess I just expected more from the boys. Well, I guess I'll have to wait till next time, the next show. And I can't wait for that one.

You know, you ask 300 people who attended a show what they thought of it, you get 300 different opinions. Everyone has their own criteria as to what makes a show good and what makes a show bad. This person can't list one specific thing that they thought was lacking -- just that they "expected more." (Well, yeah, of course -- I think that every time I get my paycheck, too!)

I was at the Chicago show, and while it wasn't a BAD show, it wasn't a GREAT show, either. First off, the sound at the venue sucked if you were back 25 rows or so. Jon wasn't talkative, the setlist was okay, not stunning, but okay, and it seemed like the crowd was more interested in their beer at times, while the band was kind of detached for the entire show. Bad show? No, it was a good, solid performance, lasted more than 2 hours, and if you don't see them often, you wouldn't pick up on the things that we did, because there weren't glaring errors or noticeable problems. But the difference between that show and Alpine Valley was noticeable. The band was tuned in and turned on, show was 2 1/2 hours long, crowd was great, setlist had a lot of variety and they got a great reaction to it. That was a GREAT show.

But again, different people have different criteria, and for some, if they don't play your favorite song, the night's a goner.

This was the first time I left a Chicago concert feeling a little disappointed. I was wondering how the show would come off after Europe; I went to Summerfest which was the first US show after Europe on the OWN tour in 2001 and thought the band was off a little during that show. They seemed just a bit off in Chicago on friday...the first time I remember that happening here. Jon wasn't very talkative, but he interacted alot with the fans. He got out of sync at the end of Prayer, and Richie messed up the intro to BOR.

I disagree with Mary Beth about the crowd.....I thought that it was a good one. Sure, there were some lags but overall it was loud and excited. I heard people commenting that it was a very good show after it was over. (they must not have gone to the March show at the United Center  )

I did enjoy it...after all it was Bon Jovi! The setlist wasn't at all surprising...they just seemed a bit too comfortable, not very imaginative.

At Alpine the next night, it was like a completely different band than the night before! They came out on fire and stayed that way. Jon was talkative and back in the touring mode. He made a racy comment right at the beginning that made my jaw drop  They had a great time and the crowd was just as on fire as the band. The lawn at Alpine fits 33,000 and it was filled. Total attendance was probably over 40-45,000. When you have that many people there, all completely into the show, it is definitely an experience. They lingered on stage for a bit longer at the end...I was hoping for Never Say Goodbye but it wasn't to be this night. :( I haven't heard it since Chicago 2000 and was more than ready to hear it again!

I think that any first show of a tour is more the band getting their touring mode back on. The first show in Spain was not as good as the second, the first show of the US Bounce tour at State College was not one of their best. I look at it this way...I saw one good show and one GREAT show this weekend. It's nothing to be upset about.

***As a sidenote to Mary Beth...wasn't that hill at Alpine a killer? :?

I was at the show but obviously missed or didn't hear Jon's comment. What was it?
