bass...richie? hugh?

who does the bass work in the band? i mean, who writes the notes of the bass? i read somewhere stating that richie writes the notes, and hugh just play 'em...is this all true? i mean, hugh is a professional...i'm sure he can do more and better than just playing the notes written by someone else...so who just writes the bass notes? richie? hugh?

not sure, i think alec wrote KTF tho right?...which i think is thw best bass riff they have

I'm quite sure it is Richie. It is the case with many bands that the guitarist write the bass parts, and build on them with his own lead guitar. That's the view of a friend of mine who has been in many bands over the years, and he seems to know what he's talking about.

It wouldn't surprise me though if Alec and Richie used to write together, and maybe Richie confirms with Hugh nowadays to.

I´ve heard that it was Hugh that wrote the Keep The Faith bass riff...

Uh.

In a band, usually everybody "write" their own parts. It's called arranging. People take the skeleton of the song and put their own stuff on it.

If a song is based on a riff, it's usually written by the writers of the song, like Bad Name. Keep The Faith is just a bass pattern, it's not really a part of the song, so I think it's the bassist who's come up with it, and in this case that would be Hugh. Alec didn't play on any of the records since 7800', at least that's the rumour.

So, the bottom line: each member "writes" his own stuff, but they work it out together to from a song.

Um, no. Many guitarists don't really know how to play bass. They think they do, but it's a totally different thing. When you play with a real bass player instead of a guitarist-pretending-to-be-bass-player, you'll know the difference. Any decent bass player will come up with his own basslines.

this is a joke

have you ever heard BJ bass parts - they are usually just root notes with some basic conjunction parts thrown in, and rarely improvised live

now somoene like Billy Sheehan in Mr Big or when working with Vai it is fair to say he writes his own bass parts :)
