What Crush DID do!
 

Ok, a lot of people go on and on about how Crush was an inferior album to many of the albums released during the prime of the band. In a way, it is true I suppose.

BUT, one thing that it did do was bring a lot of new fans into the Bon Jovi family. And when I say new fans, I don't mean little teenie-boppers who only know IML, but younger people who got 'introduced' to the band through Crush, then simply fell in love with the band's music.

In some ways, it was merely getting the foot in the door, as it was for me. It made me more interested in the band and as a result, I now have all their albums and I rate Crush below at least 4 of those.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it may not have been their best album in terms of music, but could it still be considered a big success because of the fact that it pulled so many fans in?

you know... i like the band because of their music and if they make music i love but it is not succesfull then i'd still like the band- but if they make crappy pop-like shit (crush) which recruits masses of fans of which bout 75% are screeming teen girls arguing about jon's ass and don't give a **** about the music then i hate them a) for recruiting majorly idiots as fans which disturb me in every way at a concert and b: (which is the most important) for making music for which listening to is a waste of time

Sure,it was a commercial succes.I mean it sold about 9 milllion.What other rock band so9ld that much in the 2000s.And it did bring new fans for sure.
But most of the people I know (including myself)don't like it eben they boughht it. And a lot turned away of BJ forgetting Slippery Jersey Faith and These Days. Maybe CRUSH brought a whole generation of new fans but a lot of old fans won't bother buying new material.I mean ,I didn't buy BOUNCE,I downloaded it,I didn't like it so i didn't bother anymore.i'm sure that happened to very many people and that might be another reason for the low Bounce sales.
I don't give a shit.if BJ will record a great album i will buy it but a lot won't buy it and i believe It's my Life and TYFLM(we are mainly talikn' about this songs) are "to blame".

I think that for the typical Bon Jovi fan the Crush album isn't going to be as good as the rest. For me personally, I still enjoy listening to it. I like more music than just the rock 'n roll which they've previously shown, and I do like what some people would define as 'pop' music. One of my favourite tracks off Crush is 'Save The World', which I know many people don't like, but I like it because it shows a different type of musicality.

For me, just because it's not as good as Keep The Faith, it doesn't mean it's a bad album, it just means it's not as good.

I wouldn't say that Bon Jovi were 'selling out' as many people put it, but I think they tried to put in something for everyone on the album. They had the love songs (TYFLM), the more pop style (Two Story Town, I Got the Girl), the rock 'n roll (IML, OWN), and the slower stuff (Mystery Train). There is at least one song everyone will like on the album, but if there's one thing I wish they'd done on Crush, it would be to make a consistent album, rather than trying to add so much diversity.

I still like the album, although I recognise it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Why do you think It's My Life is "too blame" for turning people away? This just has me curious, because I think it's traditional Bon Jovi and similar to old classics such as Bad Medicine.

Crush is alot better than Keep The Faith IMO

What upsets me is that i remember when Crush was first released i was very excited and on a bon jovi list someone criticising the album was slated by EVERYONE on there, and then now i share that persons' opinions completely.

It was selling out really in that it was experimental in the way zeppelin, beatles, floyd were experimental - ie trying to convey a certain message or enter a realm of music that not many Western bands had attempted. I hardly call trying to sell more records by sounding more pop being experimental... other than they experimented with, and kept the results of, pop.

neither is rock n roll. IML is very poppy and commercial... in many ways so is OWN only less so. At least with OWN we got the short rock song, guitar solo, scream, air-punching sort of song... fast etc IML is too slow. I can't think of any songs the band has done faster than about 110bpm before Hey God (and that was probably about 120/130)... i'm not saying they need to be iron maiden, but a few fast numbers would certainly compensate for the open all nights and all about lovin' yous.

do you really think it is worth it to buy an album or maintain interest in an album where you only like maybe 1-4 songs?

diverse as in blues, heavy metal, some ballady stuff, rock n roll a la 1960s John Fogerty, Fast rock... ??

I don't really see how It's My Life is pop. It's in pretty much the same style as a lot of their earlier music. It's certainly commercial, but then Living on a Prayer was commercial so I don't really see where you're coming from with that.

I agree that having a bit of everything for everyone is a bad thing. I don't like it when bands do that.

I also agree that they should try doing a few faster songs, it would add a bit more variety and help stopping similar songs sounding the same.

When I say diverse, I don't mean diverse as in completely contrasting musical styles, I mean diverse as in different from what they used to play. There aren't too many songs like Two Story Town on previous albums for example.
